Purpose:
This procedure provides a format for ensuring that
workplace inspections are conducted and consistent.
This standard applies to all areas of the workplace.
The employer is responsible for ensuring the proper
application of this procedure. All employees will follow the
standard and participate in workplace inspections. The
success of this procedure relies on the participation of all
employees.
Roles & Responsibilities/Procedure:
Supervisor Responsibilities:
The Supervisor will conduct periodic inspections in the
workplace on an ongoing basis to indentify health and
safety hazards, equipment maintenance issues, material
handling equipment issues, hazard control effectiveness
and housekeeping problems.
Record any issues found and remedial action taken in
Supervisor’s notebook.
It is also the responsibility of the Supervisor to deal with
any issues reported to Him or Her from the inspections
performed by the Worker Health and Safety
Representatives on an ongoing basis as well as what is
documented by them during their monthly inspections in a
timely manner dependant on the severity of the issue, and
to document what is reported to Him or Her and the date of
task completed.
Inspections by Employee’s:
Regional Automotive employees although not assigned any
inspections, are to report to the Worker Health and Safety
Representatives or Supervisors any issues which may be
deemed hazardous to their health or others, as well as any
concerns they may have that could result in personal injury
to them or their co-workers.
Inspections by Worker Health and Safety
Representatives:
The Worker Health and Safety Representatives will
schedule MONTHLY workplace inspections.
The purpose of the inspection is to identify health and
safety hazards, equipment maintenance issues, verify
completion of previous issues noted on past inspection
forms, hazard control effectiveness, training needs and
housekeeping issues.
The inspection schedule shall be completed in December
for the following year and must be completed on a monthly
basis.
1: Prepare for inspection by reviewing previous reports.
2: Be familiar with the work processes and work areas.
3: Review workplace requirements as necessary (standard
procedures, etc.)
4: Wear the required Personal protective Equipment.
5: Use Monthly Workplace Inspection Checklist as a guide
to ensure a thorough inspection.
6: All substandard or unsatisfactory conditions are to be
documented using the Workplace Inspection Checklist.
7: Check to see if previous actions are complete.
8: Recognition of good practices and adherence to
procedures should also be noted.
9: Suggestions should be noted in the comments section of
the Workplace Inspection Checklist.
10: Take corrective action immediately when
possible/necessary.
11: Submit the Workplace Inspection Checklist to the
Supervisor for review and to initiate appropriate corrective
action when necessary, then have signed by the Supervisor
before placing in the monthly checklist binder.
12: Supervisor will post a copy on the Health and Safety
Board of any reported hazards in the workplace identified
and the actions taken to resolve the issues, as well as the
completion date.
13: A copy of the Workplace Inspection Checklist will be
filed in the appropriate binder for any reviews.
Communication:
This inspection procedure and any changes made to it will
be communicated to all employees at new worker
orientation, staff training sessions or meetings.
Training:
Supervisor will ensure that employees are provided with
appropriate training regarding how to conduct or report on
inspections or findings prior to the first inspection.
If an employee feels they need further training, the
employee will advise their supervisor.
Evaluation:
Supervisor will review compliance and effectiveness of
inspection procedure at least annually by examining
inspection records to look for trends, asking employees for
feedback and walking around to see that inspection
procedure is being followed.
All workers will be evaluated on their understanding of the
Workplace Inspection procedure.
