Colts Welcome Pack
Introduction
This welcome pack provides information on Horsham Hockey Club Colts
Section for new and existing members.
I hope you find it useful. If you have any comments or suggestions for
additional information that could be included, please contact me.
Sue Chinn
Colts Coordinator
Horsham Hockey Club
Horsham is a well established hockey club founded in 1969. The club has
grown over the years and now has seven men’s and five ladies teams.
The Colts Section underpins the success of the club and many players
progress into the senior sides at all levels.
The club is a constituent member of Horsham Sports Club and shares a large
and sociable clubhouse in Cricketfield Road, Horsham.
For more details, see the club’s website:
http://www.pitchero.com/clubs/horsham/
Horsham Hockey Club was accredited with ClubFirst on the 23rd March 2009
with re-accreditation being sought in 2015. This shows we have working
process and procedures in place to meet England Hockey requirements.
Who can play?
The club is open to everyone regardless of background or ability, including
complete beginners of all ages. You do not need to have played hockey at
school.
The normal minimum age is 6 (Year 2 at school). We do have some younger
children, particularly siblings, however we do ask that a parent or other carer
is present for the under 6’s.
The oldest Colts teams we currently run are the Under 18 Boys and Under 18
Girls. Above this age, players usually move into the adult sides.
Children with disabilities are as welcome as anyone else. England Hockey
provides guidance which the club follows on adapting the game to involve
everyone. For more details please contact the Colts Coordinator.

Membership and Fees
The membership fees for 2015-16 season are detailed on the Colts
Membership Form.
This form is on the website and can be downloaded.

Age Categories Explained
Age categories are by school year for most competitions/matches.
England Hockey have introduced an age group system based on the year a
child is born in, rather than the traditional school year based age groups. For
each birth year, children born on or after 1st Jan will fall into a particular age
group. This applies to EH competitions only.
Coaching
Colts Coaching
Colts coaching is every Sunday, 9:30am – 12:30pm or 1.30pm (depending
upon mateches) from the first Sunday in September until Easter on the
synthetic pitch at Broadbridge Heath Leisure Centre. There is a break for
Christmas and New Year.
The training is divided into groups based on age and/or ability depending on
the activity. Pitch times and allocation is as follows:
9.30am to 10.30am
10.30am to 12.30pm
Or
10.30am to 12.00pm
12.00pm to 1.30pm
Under 8 &10’s
12 - 18’s
12 - 14’s
16 - 18’s
A typical session consists of a warm-up followed by skill development
exercises and some small sided games. We aim to have a qualified coach
leading each group with one or two assistants helping out.
Your skills will improve if you attend coaching regularly, but it is not
compulsory! It is recognised that people take part in a wide range of other
activities at weekends. There’s no need to let anyone know if you can’t come.
Please bring the following to each coaching session:
 Trainers, astroturf boots are ideal but not essential (no long studs)
 Sensible clothes for running around in, eg shorts and T-shirt in any
colour
 Shin pads (mandatory)
 Mouth guard / gumshield (highly recommended)
 Hockey stick (if you have one)
 A drink, preferably water
 Coaching fee

Brian Humphreys – Colts Head Coach
 Started playing hockey at 12 and in first season became a regular in
the U12 School team (Steyning Grammar) and was also selected for
Sussex U13. Went on to play for the school team at 15 and played for
Sussex U14, U15, U16 & U18 (my Sussex coach in those days being a
certain Alan Grey).
 In the 1978/79 (aged 14), joined Horsham HC senior section (no colts
section in those days) and played in the 4th XI. At 17, debuted for the
1st XI and played through to the end of the 6th form. For 3 years,
played for South Bank University (Polytechnic in those days) 1st XI
before returning to Horsham 1st XI in 1988.
 Played for the 1st & 2nd XI from them until now. Played indoor hockey
for Horsham and MEL until the Crawley league stopped (due to
astroturf pitches & floodlights).
Playing Highlights:
 Horsham 1st XI promotion to Kent Sussex Regional League.
 Horsham 2nd XI promotion to Premier League.
 Sussex Vets Champions 2006.
 Playing EG 1st XI in Semi-final Sussex Cup (with virtually every player
an international) - we lost but I tackled Richard Leman (once) and we
hit the post!!
 In 2005 took up coaching the Horsham U11s and passed Level 1
coaching award in 2006. In 2006 became head coach at Horsham
Hockey Club Colts Section. In 2007, started level 2 coaching award
and completed it in March 2009. In June 2010, started the level 3
coaching award. Have worked with most age groups at some time, but

the last 2 seasons as U18 boys (Outdoor) & Girls U18 (Indoor &
Outdoor).
Brian is responsible for all the coaches involved with the Colts sections, so
should you have any questions, or are keen to get more involved with
coaching on a Sunday please do contact him.
Weather
The pitch is quite exposed and young children especially can feel the cold.
Depending on the weather it is a good idea to bring some or all of the
following to coaching:
 Warm top
 Warm tracksuit bottoms or leggings
 Waterproofs (jacket and trousers)
 Gloves
 Hat
We try to run sessions every week regardless of the weather, usually the only
thing that stops us is ice or snow. However if the weather is very poor it may
not be sensible for the younger children to come.
If some children start to get too cold we will retreat to the café area in the
sports centre, or the reception area at the Weald.
Senior Coaching
The club runs mid-week coaching sessions for those playing in development
teams and senior sides on a Saturday. These are aimed at those with some
experience from about 11 years old (Year 7) upwards (for Hotshots and
Hotstars) and 13 Year (year 9) olds for all other adult sides. The times for this
season are:

Player Development
The whole focus of the Colts Section is on developing players. The following
points are of particular note.
County Development Squads
Sussex Hockey run Junior Development Centres (JDC) for talented players,
from 12 years old and upwards. These act as a pathway to the Junior
Academy Centre (formerly the county junior teams). Each spring the club is
asked to nominate a limited number of players for assessment to join the
development squads. The choice of nominations is made primarily by the
team managers with support from the coaches.
If you are particularly keen to be nominated, then talk to your team manager
or coach to ensure you are considered.
If you play hockey at school and are likely to be nominated by the school then
please tell us as this may allow us to avoid duplication and nominate someone
else.
If you participate in the development squads you should receive an
assessment each year. If you share this with your team manager and/or
coach we will be able to assist with areas where you could improve.
Stix Skills
The Stix Skills Awards are a way of finding out just how good your hockey
skills are. The Awards are for anyone under 10 years old and there are four
levels – Cub, Bronze, Silver and Gold.
Participants complete six skills tests, gaining points for things like scoring
goals, dribbling around cones and lifting the ball over a stick. Points for all the
tests is added up giving you a final score.
This year we will be using Stix Skills for all Colts with a simplified version for
the Under 8s to U10s. There will be a special session at the start and end of
the season, so players can see for themselves how much they have improved
over the season.
All participants will receive a certificate for the level achieved.

Helping Out
The Colts Section is run entirely by parents and volunteers. The more people
who offer to help out the more the club can offer to members.
The ways in which we need parents to help are:
Assisting with coaching
Training sessions are usually divided into 3 groups,
each with a lead coach. Ideally two assistants are
needed for each group in order attain ideal ratios of
1 coach per 12 players. You do not need to have
played hockey before, although it obviously helps.
Many older teenagers also help, and this is a good
way of gaining experience of working with children.
Other help at coaching
sessions
Umpiring
Tournaments
Managing a team
Other roles
If you would like to help, please talk to the Colts
Coordinator or sign up on the rota in the “Training
Folder”.
Each week we need someone to take the register on
the gate, and make sure any new players are
welcomed.
We also need a first-aider on hand.
We are always looking for more umpires, especially
for tournaments. If you are able or interested in
umpiring please contact the Colts Coordinator.
We always need lots of help at home tournaments, if
your child is playing in one, please offer to help with:
 Updating the score sheets
 Timing of matches
 Organising a team, especially when Horsham
has multiple teams
 Umpiring
We nearly have a full set of team managers for the
current season, however, we are looking for under
10 mixed, under 12 girls and under 18 boys.
Other areas where more help would be appreciated
are publicity and liaison with schools.
If you can help in any of these ways, or have other ideas for developing the
club, please contact the Colts Coordinator.
Clothing and Equipment
We try and keep this simple, low cost and flexible.
Match Kit
The Colts team colours are:
 Black socks
 Black shorts or skirt
 White Shirt (club provided)
August 2015
Horsham Hockey Club
Colts Welcome Pack
For matches the club has sets of numbered team shirts. You will need to
provide your own shorts/skirt/skort and socks. Girls may wear skirts, skorts or
shorts.
Younger players often wear leggings or tracksuit bottoms in cold weather,
these should ideally be black or dark blue.
Some players like to wear headscarves, this is fine.
Horsham Hockey Club clothing is available to order online through from our kit
provider Game, Set and Match.

Jewellery
It is best not to wear jewellery, and anything that could injure you or another
player must not be worn. Ear studs are allowed.
Shin Pads
These are mandated for safety by England Hockey. Hockey specific ones are
available, but football ones are OK. The hockey ones usually come slightly
higher up the shin and also provide better ankle protection. No shin pads, no
play / train.
Mouth Guards
These are strongly recommended to protect the teeth and gums. Two sorts
are available:
1. Standard size ones from sports shops, which you soften in hot water
and moulded in the mouth.
2. Custom made from your dentist.
The latter provide more protection, a better fit and are more comfortable,
however they are also significantly more expensive.
If you wear a brace or other dental appliance please ask your dentist for
advice.

Hockey Sticks
When you first start playing its best to use one of the club sticks
to start with so you can be sure you know what length you are
comfortable with before buying one. There is a bag of sticks at
training – all labelled and colour coded based on size.
Try and avoid getting a stick that is too long, the correct length
is from the ground to about the top of the hip bone. The
smallest size generally available is about 26 inches, which is
about right for most of the under 8s.
Shoes
Ordinary trainers are OK for training and younger players.
However at some point you will probably want some
astro-boots designed for synthetic pitches. These have a
pattern of short rubber studs and provide much more grip.
Football boots designed for grass with long studs must not be
used on synthetic pitches.
Practice Balls
If you want a ball or two to practice at home the club has some
for sale at cost price, approximately £3.00 each.
Goalkeeping Kit
The club provides goalkeepers kit for all the Colts teams. As players get
older, if they want to specialise in goalkeeping they may want to purchase
their own.
If you are a goalkeeper and become aware of any faults in the equipment
please advise your team manager so that repair/replacement can be
organised.
For all U18’s (i.e. Colts), Horsham
Hockey Club MANDATES that every goalkeeper has either a helmet with built
in throat protection (as shown above) OR has a helmet without built in throat
protection but has a wrap around throat protector (as shown above) as well
(not the dangly down ones as it is felt these can get trapped in other GK
equipment and cause injury).

Policies and Other Information
Health and Safety
For training sessions there will always be one person with overall
responsibility for Health and Safety. This is usually the Colts Coordinator or
Head Coach. They will ensure that there is a First Aid kit and a mobile
telephone available.
Although the Sports Centre provides First Aid cover, we aim to have someone
with current first aid certificate present at each Colts training session.
Team managers are also given first aid kits and encouraged to attend first aid
training courses.
An incident report form will be completed whenever first aid is provided.
Photography
Unless informed otherwise the club assumes that parents/carers consent to
their children being photographed during matches in accordance with
following policy. If you do not want your child photographed please tick the
relevant box on the Colts Membership Form.
In some environments, particularly adult competition it is difficult to control
photography by external parties. There may be times that photographs and/or
film footage may be taken during matches and training sessions by approved
agents and/or officers of Horsham Hockey Club. Such images shall only be
used for publicity/training purposes in accordance with Horsham Hockey Club
Safeguarding and Protecting Young People Policy and Photography Policy.
If agreement is given, then consent is given for your son/ daughter to feature
in such photos/images Horsham Hockey Club only grant approved agents the
right to use the images resulting from the photo/film shoots. This includes any
reproductions or adaptations of the images for all general purposes, e.g. local
newspapers, local magazines, other promotional articles (including flyers) and
the club’s website.
Changing Facilities
Where juniors play for adult sides there is usually only one changing room
available for each team. This means that juniors and adults have to change
together. If parents or juniors are not happy with this arrangement it is
suggested that they arrive for matches already changed.
Travel
Travel to away matches is usually organised based on car sharing. By
agreeing to your child playing in an away match you are giving consent for
them to be transported in any car by any other parent or club volunteer. If you
are not happy with this arrangement it is suggested that you provide transport
for your own child.

Colts Welcome Pack
When young children travel with another parent or club volunteer they should
always carry contact details for a parent/carer that are valid on that day.
Collecting Children after Coaching
Children aged 12 or under should be collected in person after coaching
sessions unless the club is notified in writing to the contrary.
At the end of the coaching session the person in charge will stay until all
children have been collected. No children will be left unattended. Please try
and collect you children promptly and ensure the contact details supplied to
the club are up to date.
Development Hockey
Development hockey is aimed at secondary school children (year 7 and
above). Games take place most Saturdays on a competitive league basis.
The purpose of the league is to provide regular hockey and to help children
make the transition from junior to adult hockey. Each team is allowed to play
up to two adults who are called 'enablers'. Their role is to help provide
structure to the game and encourage good habits. In other words, they are on
field coaches. Match fees maybe required for these matches (depending on
membership adopted), and teas are provided for the team at the home side’s
clubhouse.
The Boys Development Team ‘Hotshots’, in a league of 14 teams. This
season Hotshots will be managed by Lorraine Harvey and coached by Nigel
(Dino) Dean and Alistair Cardwell. “When selecting the team, priority will be
given to players based on age and ability. Our aim is for all players to be fully
equipped to play adult hockey by age 16. Having said that we will also try and
blood younger or newer players as games allow. We hope to be one of the
stronger teams this year, so there should be plenty of opportunity for all”.
The Girls Development Team ‘Hotstars’ is currently managed by Carolyn
Holden, and coached by Fran Crossley who says “Girls that are in Year 7 or
above, beginner or experienced, are all welcome and become involved with
Hotstars; the aim being to improve both confidence and experience of the
players and enjoy playing hockey within the senior section of the hockey club”.
Development Training Times & Managers:
Hotshot Boys: - Thursday 6.00pm – 7.30pm (starts first week in September)
- Pitch: Farlington School
Hotstar Girls: – Thursday 6.00pm – 7.30pm (starts first week in September)

Senior Hockey
Colts aged 13 years and above are ‘of age’ to play in senior matches,
however this is by invitation of a Senior Captain of the Club Captains.
Normally Colts have played and trained in the development teams before
progressing into the senior teams but this is not always the case.
The senior hockey section is run differently to Colts, the main difference being
that no fees are paid at the weekly training sessions. All costs (pitch hire,
umpires, match teas etc) incurred by the senior matches are covered in the
weekly match fees. Colts pay both a training fee and a match fee.
Horsham have both a Men’s & Ladies Club Captain so if you have any other
questions please do not hesitate to contact them.
