The Madden NFL History
•
•
Madden NFL is a groundbreaking American football video game series developed by
Electronic Arts Tiburon for EA Sports.
The game is named after Pro Football Hall of Famer John Madden, a well-known
color commentator* for NBC Sports and formerly a successful Super Bowl-winning
coach during the 1970s with the ‘Oakland Raiders’.
*A color commentator, sometimes known as a color analyst, is a member of the broadcasting team for a sporting event who assists the play-by-play announcer by
filling in any time when play is not in progress. It is North American terminology in origin, but is also now in wide use in the UK broadcasting industry. They
provide expert analysis and background information, such as statistics, strategy and injury reports, on the teams and athletes, and occasionally light humor.
Often they are former players and/or coaches of the sport being broadcasted. In the United Kingdom the term “co-commentator or “summariser” may be used
instead on occasion, although commentary teams have a similar make-up, with one professional commentator describing the passage of play, and another,
usually an ex-player or manager, providing supplementary input as the game progresses.

EA’s involvement with Madden NFL dates back to the early 1990’s when EA producer Richard
Hilleman hired Orr to re-design John Madden Football.
Orr and Hilleman together developed the game that we still recognize today as Madden Football,
the best-selling title in the history of games in North America.
Richard Hilleman was a key figure in building the massive EA Sports brand and has spent over 20
years working in product development at EA. Whilst Scott Orr’s career in sports games spans over
20 years, as well as a strong track record founding companies as an entrepreneur. In 2001 Wired
magazine named Orr on its list of "game making gods."
