Position Description - Conservancy Manager

CONSERVANCY MANAGER
For more than 50 years, the African Wildlife Foundation (AWF) has been a key player in African
Conservation and sustainable development. AWF is currently seeking an experience and highly motivated
Manager to manage the operations of its Conservancy in Tanzania.
Key Responsibilities
This position will be responsible for managing large and complex estates (national parks, conservancies,
reserves, sanctuaries, farms or forests) to develop the conservancy into a self-sustaining property that
integrates wildlife conservation, tourism and livestock; benefits the surrounding communities; protects
the ecological integrity of the land and broader landscape; and contributes to the local and national
economy. Operationally this will entail managing the conservancy and overseeing all conservancy
activities such as wildlife conservation, livestock management and tourism. In addition, the position will
manage community relations, minimize conservancy expenses and maximize revenue to ensure longterm ranch self-sustainability, strong conservation and benefits to communities; manage all conservancy
staff to ensure motivation, high productivity and adaptive management, supervise, monitor, and
maintain conservancy assets at highest level, manage all conservancy logistics to ensure compliance with
conservancy regulations and efficiencies, oversee management of all conservancy budgets, expenses and
revenue, ensure clear record keeping, accurate budgeting and compliance with AWF financial procedures;
keep abreast with local and regional conservation and community initiatives and inform relevant AWF
teams as needed. This position will report to the Maasai Steppe Heartland Director and Vice President,
Program Operations.
The successful candidate will have;
 A Bachelor’s degree in conservation, natural resource management, tourism management or related.
 A minimum of seven years’ experience managing a conservancy, sanctuary, national park, or
integrated wildlife, livestock and tourism ranch.
 Demonstrated ability to think creatively, solve problems effectively and manage a business
efficiently.
 A strong drive for results with demonstrated ability to work both independently and as a member of
team; to work with a diversity of stakeholders and communities; and to effectively coordinate, lead
and motivate a multidisciplinary staff.
 In-depth knowledge of contemporary approaches to conservation, livestock development and natural
resource management.
 Demonstrated commitment to wildlife conservation and natural resource management.
 Experience in designing and managing wildlife management projects.
 Demonstrated ability to work effectively in remote areas, in cross-cultural situations, with diverse
economic and professional background, in both public and private sectors
 Excellent verbal and written communications (English and Kiswahili); computer literacy essential.
Knowledge of local languages ( Maa) is an added advantage
 A firm understanding of pastoralist customary livestock practices and community engagement
processes.
