Cross-Contamination

Reduce Costs and Combat
Cross-Contamination
while minimizing waste by using
3M single-patient use rolls.
REDUCE THE RISK OF INFECTION AND WASTE
To combat cross-contamination, federal and CDC guidelines
increasingly suggest that some items, such as adhesive tapes,
should not be shared between patients. As a result, infection
prevention-conscious facilities often dedicate a single roll of
tape to each patient. With traditional rolls of tape, this results
in up to 70-90% of each roll of tape being discarded. In other
words, more than two miles of tape is wasted for every
1,000 patients discharged. To help reduce infection caused
by cross-contamination and waste, 3M offers several tapes in
single-patient-use rolls.

The ongoing risks of healthcare-acquired infections (HAIs) are prompting
hospitals to seek new methods for reducing cross-contamination.
“Switching to shorter rolls of medical tapes can provide an important opportunity to decrease
cross-contamination, eliminate wasted tape, decrease hospital supply costs and improve the
standard of patient care. ”

Reduce Cross-Contamination Risk
How Many Single-Patient Use Rolls Will I Need?
One waste study found “average tape usage was only one yard of a 10 yard roll .” Another waste study found
that “average tape use was two yards of a 10 yard roll of tape .” If your facility is similar to these, it will need
one or two single-patient use rolls to replace a 10 yard roll.
