Equal Opportunities Policy
Respect for all human beings implies equal opportunities for all. Ysgol Pen-yBryn is committed to developing and maintaining the right climate and
attitudes to ensure that all staff are treated fairly. We believe that no one
should be disadvantaged by the nature of their sex, disability, marital
status, race, colour or any other unjustifiable criteria. All staff are
expected to make a positive personal contribution, through their attitudes
and actions, to promote real equal opportunities for all.
The laws relating to Equal Opportunities are:




Equal Pay Act 1970 (amended 1983)
Sex Discrimination Act 1975-1986
Race Relations Act 1976 (amended2000)
Disability Discrimination Act 1996
Equality Act 2010
These laws are designed to provide re-dress for those who consider they are
discriminated against. In employment, these acts make it unlawful for
employers to discriminate on grounds of sex, race, nationality, disability,
ethnic or national origin, marital status and differing terms of employment.
Principles
 Discrimination on the basis of age, colour, culture, origin, sex, or
disability is unacceptable at Ysgol Pen-y-Bryn. Every member of staff will
endeavour to further this objective by personally contributing towards a
happy and caring environment and by showing respect for and appreciation
of each other as individuals.
 We are committed to ensuring equality of opportunity for employment
and advancement so that all employee/job seekers are recruited, trained
and promoted solely on the basis of merit and justifiable job
requirements.
 The school values diversity amongst the staff and pupils.
 All forms of discrimination by any person within the school will be treated
seriously.
 The staff will practise an equal opportunities philosophy.
In line with the school’s Staff Development Policy, the school will help all
staff to take advantage of any appropriate training opportunities, where
possible. Where appropriate, staff will have access to training that will
help them work in a multicultural environment, including the physical care
and dietary needs of specific groups.
All staff need to be aware of the languages spoken by the pupils
attending Ysgol Pen-y-Bryn. We need to further develop pupils’
communication skills as many pupils attending the school will need to use
Makaton signs and symbols, communication aids, and PECS in order to
communicate with others.
Positive steps will be taken to provide and share information and
reference literature within the school. We realise that it is important to
develop a means by which staff can support one another. We encourage
staff to share their specialist knowledge, experience and skills with other
colleagues in the school.
Parental Relationships
We will involve parents in helping the school develop an understanding of
their culture and religion and advise us on ways of reflecting their
backgrounds in all aspects of our work.
Parents are encouraged to work with us. The school has a number of
mechanisms for actively seeking the views and perceptions of parents
about their child. In trying to understand pupils’ behaviour it is necessary
to take into account the home circumstances, along with social and
medical history.
We wish to continue to extend our links with the community and to
promote the contribution of parents and community groups within the life
of the school.
Implementation
Responsibility for the implementation of Ysgol Pen-y-Bryn’s Equal
Opportunities Policy rests with the Headteacher, with all staff working
actively together to support the policy.
This policy will be reviewed in consultation with the staff and Governors
on an annual basis and in the light of updated legislation.
