When there is insufficient tooth structure remaining to support a large restoration or when the biting force exceeds the strength of the restorative material, a more durable restoration must befabricated. The full coverage crown is such a restoration. made from metal, porcelain, or porcelain fused to metal. Each material has its 'advantages and disadvantages. You and yourdentist can determine which material is best for your particular tooth. Although crowns require more chair time and have a higher fee, they are the best and most durable restoration for heavily restored teeth. Crowns are full coverage cast restorations that when in place, will distribute biting forces over the whole tooth. Thus reducing the chance of fracture of teeth with large restorations.
