Guilderland football win first game of season

GUILDERLAND — There
were smiles on t h e faces of t h e
Guilderland football players as
the game a g a i n s t Mohonasen
on Friday night was coming to
an end. The players were smiling b e c a u s e t h e y j u s t won
their first game of the year, 4225, on a tremendous comeback.
The Dutch trailed, 25-7, with
11 38 left in the third quarter
after Mohonasen scored another touchdown.
However, t h e Dutch scored
35 u n a n s w e r e d points in the
third and fourth q u a r t e r to
pull out the victory.
The comeback s t a r t e d after
Mohonasen's last touchdown.
Guilderland's Kolbe Sheridan
returned the kickoff to the 40yard line. Quarterback Ed Ash
completed p a s s e s to M a t t
Bloomer for nine y a r d s and
Chris Schultz for five y a r d s .
With an offsides penalty on
for good. Ash hit Bloomer on
t h e two-point conversion to
make the score, 28-25.
On t h e e n s u i n g kickoff,
Mohonasen
fumbled
and
Schultz recovered the ball for
Guilderland.
Sheridan ran the ball to the
32-yard line. A face m a s k
penalty on Mohonasen during
t h e tackle moved t h e ball to
t h e 17-yard line. Two plays
later, Ash threw a pass to
Bloomer t h a t put the ball on
the one-yard line. On the next
Mohonasen he moved the ball
to the Warriors' 41-yard line.
Sheridan lost four yards on a
run; then Ash threw a perfect
pass to receiver Jim Allan who
caught the ball and raced to
t h e five-yard line. S h e r i d a n
picked up three yards on a run
and Alec Kenney ran for one
yard.
Sheridan t h e n r a n the ball
into t h e e n d zone for t h e
touchdown. Bloomer missed
the extra point to m a k e the
score 25-13.
The Dutch got t h e ball back
after the defense s h u t down
Mohonasen, which punted t h e
ball out of bounds at the 45yard line.

Mohonasen 36-yard line; t h e n
Ash t h r e w a p a s s to Scott
play, Ash ran the ball into the
end zone. Bloomer kicked the
extra point to give the Dutch a
35-25 lead with 7:47 left in the
game.
However, the game wasn't
over. The Warriors drove t h e
ball inside the five-yard line. A
pass into the end zone was intercepted by Sheridan. But a
p a s s interference p e n a l t y on
G u i l d e r l a n d l i n e b a c k e r Tom
Blanchard nullified the interception and moved the ball to
the one-yard line.
On the next play, Blanchard
got
his
redemption.

Sheridan ran t h e ball to the
10-yard line and t h e n , two
plays later, broke a long run to
t h e Mohonasen 16-yard line.
Ash ran the ball for the touchdown and Bloomer kicked the
extra point to round out t h e
scoring.
Ash also had scored the first
touchdown of the game for the
Dutch on a one-yard run.
"We played as a team; we
played together," said Kenney
after the game.
"It was great to get a win.
It's t h e best feeling," said
Blanchard.

Schwan agreed with his players.

"It w a s a g r e a t g a m e , "
Schwan said. "We had forgotten what it takes to win."
The coach praised the play of
his team, especially in the second half.
"In the first half, we were
little sloppy," he said "It was
like waking a sleeping giant
and the kids in the second half
made tremendous plays."
The Dutch hope to get another win to finish off the season. They now h a v e a 1-7
record and will host Christian
B r o t h e r s Academy on Friday
night.

at the National Cheerleading Association cheerleading camp in
August. The others are: Ed Ash, Emily Cain, Kim Laier, Monaa
Callender, and Cori Wein. The team recieved many awards during the week; the most important were the "Top Team " and "Spirit
Award."

Ash and then handed the ball
to Schultz. He ran to the fiveyard line but the play was nullified because of a holding
penalty on the Dutch.

yards and on the next play he
caught a pass from Ash a t the
28-yard line. After a Sheridan
run for no gain and a sack, Ash
and Dillon hooked up again for
a pass. The result was a touchdown. The Dutch had the lead
