We are a small, friendly GP surgery whose aim is at all times to deliver a wide range of quality
health services locally in a professional and empathic manner and develop those services as
required by the needs of our local population

RECEPTION STAFF
The reception staff are here to help by arranging appointments and advising on waiting times at
the surgery. They will always do their best to help provide you with an appointment as soon as
possible. Please check in at reception desk on arrival at the surgery so that they are able to make
sure that you are attended to as soon as possible. Please do not be offended if they ask you a
few questions in order to assess the urgency of your request – any information is treated in the
strictest confidence.
They have a difficult job – please help them to help you.

This practice is a member of My Healthcare.
This means we can offer appointments at Riverbrook Medical Centre outside of normal hours
including early mornings, evenings and weekends.
OUT OF HOURS EMERGENCIES
Whilst the surgery is closed, the out-of-hours service will be available to take you call. You can
contact them on 0845 603 1761.
Telephone advice can also be obtained 24 hours, 7 days a week, by calling 111.
SURGERY APPOINTMENTS

All consultations are by appointment. Please book by telephoning or calling at reception. Only
one patient can be seen at one appointment. An appointment slot is for 10 minutes – if you
require a double appointment please ask a receptionist. If you cannot keep an appointment
please let us know so that we may offer it to someone else. Appointments can be pre-booked or
booked on the day. You can choose which practitioner you would like to see.
YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES AS A PATIENT





Please treat staff politely and with the same courtesy as you would wish to be treated
yourself.
Please show some commitment to improving your own and your family’s health as you
expect from your doctor.
Please use the practice facilities and services in a responsible manner.
Please be punctual for appointments. Remember each appointment is for one person
only
Please only discuss one problem in an emergency appointment.

clinics can be made through the receptionists.

DISTRICT NURSE
The district nurse is available for home visits, assessments, continence, wound management, end
of life care and other community nursing services.

BHM (Birmingham Healthy Minds) counselling available.

CHRONIC DISEASE MANAGEMENT
Please make sure you attend regular checks every six to twelve months
NON-NHS SERVICES
Certain services are not available under the NHS. These include completion of medical insurance
forms, HGV, PSV and elderly drivers’ examinations, solicitors’ letters, private sick notes etc. The
practice will provide these services but a charge will be made.
TEST RESULTS
All blood tests are performed at surgery by the phlebotomist. Please book at reception and call
after one week for results. Please telephone reception between 11.00am and 12noon, when the
receptionist will be able to tell you if your result is normal or whether you require medical
advice.
TELEPHONE ADVICE
The doctor or nurse are happy to deal with requests for advice over the telephone. If you feel
that your problem can be dealt with in this way, please let reception know. You may be advised
to make an appointment to be seen in the surgery if necessary.
HOME VISITS
GP home visits can be arranged by calling reception. Please call the surgery as early as possible
for an initial assessment.
NHS GP WALK-IN CENTRE
Katie Road Walk-in centre – 15 Katie Road, Selly Oak, Birmingham, B29 6JG between 0800am –
1800pm or call them on 0121 415 2095.
NHS Walk-in centre on the lower ground floor of Boots the Chemist in Birmingham City Centre,
which is open seven days a week 0800am-1800pm Monday-Saturday and 1100am-1700pm
Sunday. They are able to offer a wide range of services if you are unable to get to your own
doctor’s surgery (for minor problems).
A&E
A&E is only for real emergencies. Please use A&E appropriately – get advice if unsure (call 111 or
gp surgery).
CHANGE OF ADDRESS
We need to have an up-to-date record of your current address and telephone number. Please
ensure that if any of this information changes, we are notified as soon as possible.
NEW REGISTRATIONS
In order to register with the practice you should bring your medical card if you have one, to the
reception desk, where a member of staff will complete the registration process with you. You do
not need to inform your previous doctor that you are registering with a new practice. It is the
responsibility of NHS England to ensure that your notes are transferred to us asap on
registration.
NEW PATIENT CHECKS
All new patient checks are required to make an appointment for an initial consultation with the
nurse as soon as they are registered. Although you may not have any specific medical problems,
this is chance to discuss medical history, medication, immunisations, lifestyle and social factors
and to have a basic health screen.
REPEAT PRESCRIPTIONS
Repeat prescriptions are issued at the discretion of the doctor for patients with a stable medical
condition and the doctor may insist on a surgery consultation if they feel it is time the patient’s
condition be checked.
We must ask for 48 hours’ notice for a repeat prescription as each one has to be signed by the
relevant doctor.
We are happy to post the prescription to you if you include a stamped addressed envelope with
the request. In order to avoid errors, all requests must be in writing – we do not accept
telephone requests.
Please book for medication review yearly (contraception reviews are 6 to 12 monthly).
Let the surgery know if there are any problems with your medication.

COMPLAINTS AND COMPLIMENTS
Our complaints procedure is displayed on the notice board in the waiting area. Please ask to
speak to the practice manager if you wish to make a verbal complaint, or contact them in writing
as soon as possible. If you are unhappy about any aspect of the care you have received from us,
we need to know about it, so that we can improve.
DATA PROTECTION
Any information we hold about you will not be shared with outside agencies unless we have your
signed consent to do so. Please speak to the practice manager who will answer any queries you
may have.
DISABLED ACCESS
The practice has wheelchair access. The practice also has disabled access toilet.

Many conditions get better on their own and can be treated successfully at home. Your
pharmacist may be able to help with these and advise bout medicines you can buy over the
counter.
