DEK & SIPLACE Press Release Amberg – August 19, 2014 ASM Assembly Systems pushes process integration in electronics production “Smart Factory” and “Industry 4.0” as engines of innovation As the Printing Solutions Division and Placement Solutions Division, DEK and SIPLACE will form the SMT Solutions segment. By pooling its SMT know-how, ASM Assembly Systems plans to accelerate the development of innovative hardware and software solutions for electronics manufacturing applications. At the press conference on its successful acquisition of DEK, the company outlined its current plans. For example, ASM Assembly Systems will expand its existing offerings in the areas of production scheduling and control, material logistics, setup processes, assembly automation and process integration and increasingly integrate these solutions. Even deploying these solutions individually on the production floor will generate significant improvements in efficiency, quality and flexibility. By integrating them, on the other hand, ASM Assembly Systems will enable its customers to implement state-of-the-art production concepts like “Industry 4.0” or “Smart Factory” over the medium to long term. “Experience has shown that abstract top-down approaches fail. Business and technology are advancing too fast, and the market’s requirements are too diverse. That’s why ASM Assembly Systems decided to go a different way. Whether the user needs scheduling software, non-stop setup changeovers, intelligent material logistics with short travel paths on the factory floor or automated placement program switchovers via PCB barcodes – we already offer many intelligent solutions that directly affect the producer’s efficiency, quality and flexibility and quickly pay for themselves. At the same time, our software engineers are working hard to integrate the processes and solutions ever more tightly in order to create the foundation for Industry 4.0 and Smart Factory applications”, explained Günter Schindler, who heads the Placement Solutions Page 1 of 5 Division of ASM Assembly Systems. “This modular and scalable approach enables our customers to implement the level of automation that works best for them – for the whole company or even line-by-line.” Solutions are already available Many SIPLACE customers already benefit from the ability to change setups without having to stop the line. This is made possible by optimizing all the processes involved – from scheduling to material logistics to the feeder and placement head hardware. While smart SIPLACE software computes the most efficient production schedules and groups, solutions like the SIPLACE Material Tower optimize the material logistics, keep travel distances short and minimize the costly “parts tourism” between warehouse and line. Intelligent feeders that can be installed and removed while the line keeps running and placement heads like the SIPLACE MultiStar, which can process a huge spectrum of components by switching operating modes on the fly, are among the many SIPLACE innovations already available today. “Without this overall integration and optimization of many tools and technologies, having something like automated production control via barcodes on PCBs would still be insufficient, because it would still require line stops. Thanks to the advanced integration of our solutions, however, our customers are able to benefit from fully automated product changeovers of the kind mentioned in the Industry 4.0 concept already today,” said Günter Schindler. Process optimization through integration The acquisition of industrial printer specialist DEK opens the door to additional improvements for ASM Assembly Systems, because printers, inspection systems and placement systems will communicate much more closely in the future as part of an optimized closed loop. Electronics manufacturers benefit quite clearly from such advances by further increasing their yield. ASM is the only company in the world that is able to offer solutions for all phases of electronics production today. We have the ideas, the knowhow and the necessary resources in both hardware and software to efficiently integrate these solutions. And let’s not forget: since we are close to our customers and know their processes, we can work with them to develop more innovative solutions that improve their production and generate profits instantly”.
