A Little History
The San Diego Heartbreakers became a tournament travel team in the fall of 1995 and has been around
ever since. Team 1 first started declaring for Nationals during the 2001-2002 season. In 2004, the team
qualified and made a trip to Rochester New York to compete for the first time at Nationals in the Women's
Senior "C" division. After that, the Heartbreakers took a break for a few years from declaring, but still
continued to play at a recreational level. For the 2007-2008 season, with the team under new
management, decided to get back into competitive mode with the hopes of making another National
Championship.
Current Information
Currently, there are two Heartbreaker travel teams that compete. Team 1 is the team that competes at
the National level in a competitive division, with committed players for the season. The season
commitment typically runs from August through April of each year.
Team 2 is for any other player that can't make a season long commitment, but would still like to
participate at a recreational level in a few select tournaments and games. We usually get these players
from the women's league at SDIA.
Anybody that is new to the San Diego area, we recommend you checking out the Women's league that is
currently being held at SDIA (San Diego Ice Arena) in Mira Mesa. This is where most of the current
Heartbreakers members play and is a good opportunity for you to meet everyone.
Starting the Season
The season for the Heartbreakers will usually start in August. This is when try-outs and the team meeting
are held. The Heartbreakers are looking for committed players who can commit for the full season,
financially and time wise. The season is typically from August 1st to April 1st of each playing season.
Team 1 will have a roster with up to 20 players, 18 skaters and 2 goalies. This roster is "locked" once the
players are chosen in August.
14 of these skaters will be the "core" of the team (unless more players want to commit). Practices are
designed around them, to prepare them for Districts/Nationals. The rest will be on the roster and
considered "Alternates". Alternates fill in behind "core" players that can't make a tournament or scheduled
game, or fill in due to an injury.
To qualify for Districts/Nationals, the team must play in at least 14 games as a team. For each player to
qualify, they must play in at least 10 of these 14 games. These games must be completed by the first
week in February. We will always strive to complete at least 16 games for qualification.
Team finances/costs will be discussed /decided on at the annual team meeting!!
Team 2 is for those that can't commit due to finances, work, etc. There is no set roster for this team and
no monthly dues. This team is on a pay as you play standard. Team 2 will play against Team 1 throughout
the season to help them prepare for Districts. Player sign-ups for Team 2 in these games is on a first
come first serve basis for each game.

During the Season
If it's your first year with the team, we do not require you to buy jerseys. The team manager will have
loaner jerseys for you. You will sign a jersey agreement that you will not damage them and that you will
return them at the end of the season or tournament. Socks will be required to be purchased, which the
team manager has in stock.
For tournament and/or game schedules, the team manager will send everyone the schedules once they
are received. This is usually 1-2 weeks before the start of the tournament.
All 20 skaters on Team 1 are required to show up for practices. This helps in reducing the cost of ice time.
All members of the Heartbreakers organization are welcome to join the team in practices. Cost is typically
$10 - $20 per session.
It is strongly recommended that everyone participate in team fundraising. The more that participate, the
more money we could raise.
Tournaments
At the beginning of the season, the Heartbreakers will have a team meeting prior to the start of the
season and, as a group, will decide on which tournaments the teams wants to participate in. The majority
rules!
Each team member is responsible for making their own travel arrangements (air flights and car rentals),
minus hotel arrangements. This allows you to be able to work around your school or work schedule.
Most of the time, players will talk among each other and work out flying together and sharing car rentals.
As for hotels, most tournaments require the team to stay at a hosting hotel. The team manager will send
the list of hotels to choose from and the team will decide which hotel to stay at together. The team usually
stays together at the same hotel. Cost of the hotel is the responsibility of each individual.
For tournaments that require traveling into a different time zone, we recommend arriving a day early and
returning the day after the tournament is scheduled. We have had some major problems in the past. This
will help alleviate problems.
