Team Surrey Club Development Plan CLUB DATE COMPLETED BY Ultimate 15th June Tom Boulton (Chairman) IN CONJUNCTION WITH Dave Halls, Joshua Fernandes, and the rest of the committee Performance - relates to the performance level of your team/s. Participation - relates to membership, participation, recreation, open-to-all student events, non-team events and similar. Personal Development - relates to how individuals in the club can develop. Such as official /coaching qualifications & volunteers opportunities, soft/transferable skills and similar. Club Management – relates to the management of the committee, whole club and the coaching structure. STRENGTHS 1 PERFORMANCE PARTICIPATION PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT CLUB MANAGEMENT One of the top Clubs in the region, qualifying for nationals at every regional tournament we entered across all formats of the sport (open, women’s and mixed). We do not hold trials for membership, and so the sport is open to all. Many members had not previously played team sports prior to joining the club. UK Ultimate has only in the last four years offered WFDF (World Flying Disc Federation) approved coaching courses. To date, three members have taken this course. One individual, Jon Pugh (Sally Edie Trophy winner 2010), has since gone on to be named Great Britain U19 Women’s Head Coach. There is a strong will within the club and the committee to continue the rapid growth of the sport through our own club and constantly strive to improve on previous years’ work. 2 3 We had a great year developing new players, with several freshers getting chosen to play on the 1st Team and then performing well within it. A few of our freshers have also now gone on to play at a club level outside of university which we strongly encourage. Opportunities are provided in both competitive (aka UK ranking & BUCS tournaments) and ‘fun’ social tournaments, providing ample opportunities within the sport for all. In the 2011/12 season, Surrey entered between one and three teams into no fewer than eight ranked tournaments. Nature of the sport encourages those with the ability to gain experience through central administrative roles. Surrey has provided the South East University Co-ordinator to UK Ultimate since 2007 (Jon Pugh 2007-11, Dave Halls 2011-); and has also provided the UKU’s London Development Officer, one of a handful of paid roles within UK Ultimate (Nathan Fowler, 2010-). Increased membership from last year despite losing a significant number of experienced players. We are now at the level we were 2 years ago with that number set to increase next year with only a few players graduating in 2012. Club members are able, if they so wish, to develop their skills both as players, and as individuals, through collaboration with local schools wishing to incorporate ultimate into physical education lessons. Members are also given ample opportunity to assist in running Surrey Slingfest. The club’s annual tournament, Santa’s Surrey Slingfest, held on the first weekend after term ends for Christmas goes into its 10th anniversary year in 2012. This tournament has grown from an 8team tournament held in UniSport in 2003 (of which four were Surrey teams, and was undersubscribed) to the established ‘Christmas-time fun tournament’ within UK Ultimate, hosting 20 teams over three pitches in 2010 at Surrey Sports Park. The tournament was oversubscribed, and could have had 30 entries. The club saw profits of £600 in 2011; the biggest ever Slingfest tournament. We enjoy close ties with the local club team Guildford Ultimate. From this relationship we receive coaching from players at a higher level than we can provide at the University alone, from players many of whom are Surrey alumni who remain in the area. WEAKNESSES PERFORMANCE 1 Despite qualifying for Nationals at every attempt, the club is yet to break the UK top 8 and accumulate any BUCS points. 2 Surrey 2 & 3 do not challenge for nationals qualification; they tend to end up in the plate (lower half) playoffs at tournaments. Thus it could be argued whilst we have one of the strongest first teams in the country, we lack strength in depth. Club did suffer a decline in tournament results, meaning the Club dropped from 19th/68 teams last year to 36th/70 teams in this years UKU university rankings. 3 PARTICIPATION PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT CLUB MANAGEMENT Female membership is our most worrying statistic. This hinders our ability to be competitive across the mixed and women’s formats of the sports, in turn affecting our overall ranking. We went from 19th last year to 36th overall this year, mainly due to not having our own women’s team to enter indoors or outdoors and a limited level of participation at mixed indoors. Despite offering fitness sessions to help improve players’ performance these were poorly attended. Fitness is a key part of the sport and by the end of a weekend tournament it is obvious which teams have worked on it and which haven’t. Opportunities for UKU coaching accreditations are not explicitly offered by the club, players have to express interest before being offered such opportunities. As such, only three people in the club’s history are UKU accredited coaches, and only one has achieved beyond Level 1. Relatively inexperienced committee. Of 8 members, less than half have served previously. CLUB OBJECTIVES (i.e. what the clubs exists to do) This should be exactly the same as in your constitution. Funding will only be given if it meets your objectives. 1 2 3 4 Provide ultimate, both recreationally and competitively, to all University of Surrey student club members. Compete in all UK Ultimate-affiliated University/BUCS events for which the club is eligible for entry. Provide weekly training sessions for both indoor and outdoor formats of the sport, with both mixed and women’s sessions. Provide national-level training and competitive experience for Surrey squad members through Guildford Ultimate. AIMS 2012/13 1 PERFORMANCE PARTICIPATION PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT CLUB MANAGEMENT Open Indoors: 1st Team: Top 3 finish at Regionals, at least a nationals qualification (top 6). Enter into beginner tournaments, including a full two-day weekend one to introduce the sport and social aspect to freshers better. Other non-competitive “fun” tournaments throughout the year will also aid this. Enter at least three teams into open indoor regionals. Offer opportunities for coaching accreditation to those who desire it. Increase inter-club communication with those who are relevant. Indoor ultimate uses similar skills as those seen in netball and basketball for example. Support members who wish to obtain a minibus licence to help with transport to and from tournaments. Increase communication within the club to make members more aware of the training plans and upcoming events that they may find relevant. Increase membership, both male and female as we have done this year. With just a few more Female members it will allow us to enter our own team to women’s indoors and two teams at mixed indoors. Increase number of members who play at club level with Guildford Ultimate, as well as other clubs, outside of university. There are a number in the region, many with Surrey alumni playing in them, which can offer national level ultimate. Advertise the club more using existing student media. Ultimate is a non traditional sport which few people outside of the team know about or how to play it, with increased awareness we hope to see increase membership. 2nd Team: Top 16 Finish 2 Mixed Indoors: Top 6 at regionals 3 Open Outdoors: 1st Team: Top 6 finish at regionals, looking for a top 26 overall finish at nationals. 4 Improve our overall UKU University Ranking from 36th (19th last year). 5 Though still very much in a “building phase” the first team will continue to push to earn BUCS points in at least one format. Enter the 1st team into club Indoors as a warm-up and to boost experience. Involve the club members with more charitable events using the links available from the Union. Provide opportunities for club members to assist in the running of Surrey Slingfest; developing transferable and organisational skills. The club currently finds a good balance between being offering everyone an opportunity to play Ultimate as well as an active social scene. We now want to offer, to those who wish to, the chance to push themselves more physically through dedicated fitness sessions and advice. Ensure Slingfest 2012 goes ahead as planned. Despite booking with the SSP there is a possibility that they cannot provide a suitable venue for us and Guildford Heat at the same time. Aim for a profit of at least £650. This will be Slingfest’s 10th anniversary and so should be the biggest one yet. PERFORMANCE How many teams does the club run? An indoor team will usually consist of about 7 or 8 players, whereas an outdoor team will be more like 12 – 14 players approximately. This can vary depending on the competition (we will normally try and take more players in a team to a national tournament, and second and third teams may contain more players than the firsts depending on the level and experience of those available). RECRUITMENT AND RETENTION How many registered (paid up) members did the club have in: 09/10 How many freshers signed up at the 11/12 Freshers’ Fayre? ~150/200 How many members (paid up) do you aim to have in 2012/13? 40 Does the club operate a ‘trial’ process for team selection/club membership? ~35 Yes 10/11 27 11/12 30 No If yes, please describe the trail process for your teams: Yes and no. Anyone is welcome to join the club, and attend trainings. The first team is picked based on ability, commitment to training and attitude. If unsuccessful in team selection, what opportunities are there for individuals to continue within the club? Anyone unsuccessful in first team selection, yet showing commitment to the club is guaranteed a space on a team. Each of Surrey 2 and 3 will always have at least one experienced player to help develop these players. 2nds/3rds captains are generally borderline first team players. There is also the possibility that motivated players which impress at regional competitions will be promoted to the first team for nationals, so there is always the opportunity to progress. What opportunities are there for non-competing members? Numerous ‘fun’ tournaments held during the year. The committee does not decide what fun tournaments to enter; if players wish to enter a tournament, the committee is happy to take control of organising logistics; but as players self-fund such tournaments, we place no restrictions on who can enter what under the Surrey banner. Please explain how you actively recruit members? This is mainly done at Freshers’ Fayre, Active Freshers’ Fayre and Re-Freshers’ Fayre through a stall handing out flyers and talking to students. We will look to improve on this in the coming year by using student media to further the understanding of our sport, which is usually surrounded by misconceptions. Please explain what the club does to actively retain its members (playing and non playing) and prevent drop out? Opportunities are provided for all ability levels at both competitive and fun levels. I believe the introduction of the London University League this year helped as freshers experience competitive ultimate earlier than they would normally, however this will not be run again next year. Off the field, we have a designated social sec., and aim to hold socials every fortnight or so. We consider ourselves a very inclusive club, and welcoming to new members. The biggest reason we tend to see from dropouts are those who misunderstood what the sport involved, or realise it is not for them (people turning up to training in jeans thinking it’s just a case of standing chucking a disc about, for instance). Those who embrace the sport in the first few weeks seldom leave. This said, we also have a number of members who don’t participate much on the field, but are very active at socials; we welcome them as members also! What recreational/social activities (if any) do you intend to do this year to attract students from outside the club? (e.g. fundraising events) We will hopefully begin to engage in charitable activities as a club. After seeing how other clubs, such as Rugby, have done them very successfully it would be good to follow their example. We are also hoping to forge links with other clubs which share many similarities with us. Netball and basketball are both very similar to our indoor game so perhaps once our indoor season finished and our arena training sessions less important we could try a social, you try our sport, we try your sport event. We have yet to discuss this with the other teams. What activities could the club run in conjunction with Team Surrey to help with recruitment and retention? We are particularly keen to try and recruit individuals who don’t succeed in trials with other clubs. They’ve come to Surrey with the intention of joining a competitive club, but haven’t been successful. Key targets are basketball (can jump and/or catch), netball (similar tactics to ultimate) and rugby (can run on pitches similarly sized to ultimate pitches). Team Surrey’s help with advertising these opportunities to trialists of these clubs would be incredibly helpful! PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT COACHING & OFFICIALS Does the club offer opportunities for training qualifications? Yes No If yes, please provide details UK Ultimate offers coaching qualifications. Should a coaching course be held in the vicinity, we would encourage members to take the opportunity. If no, would your club like to offer these opportunities and what would you like to do? Does the club itself, or in conjunction with the University, offer members volunteering opportunities? Yes No If yes, please describe in further detail i.e. type of opportunity. Players are encouraged to get involved in the running of Santa’s Surrey Slingfest, to ensure the tournament runs smoothly, and that it maintains its image as the Christmas-time tournament. If no, would your club like to offer these opportunities and what would you like to do? We would like to offer our members the opportunity to volunteer with charities in conjunction with the Union. How many members are First Aid Qualified? Please provide details of these members below: Name Club Role Qualification Held Qualification Expiry Date CLUB MANAGEMENT Does the club have links with local sports clubs If yes, please describe in further detail: Yes No Our team enjoys a very good relationship with the local mixed club team, Guildford Ultimate (GU). Both TSU & GU have it within their constitutions to maintain a link between the clubs. In essence, it brings Surrey under the umbrella of Guildford Ultimate, but we remain an explicitly separate club when it comes to management, administration and finances. (Because of the Union’s charitable status, and GU not being solely for students, we can’t fully integrate). In the eyes of UK Ultimate, we are seen as “a great example of how a university club should develop their sport with the community to the benefit of both parties”. Currently, once a month Guildford Ultimate are invited to train with Surrey, and in doing so provide their qualified coaches, and bring a level of ability and expertise that Surrey wouldn’t otherwise have access to. In welcoming Guildford to train with us, this enables Surrey players to access a higher level of competition and ability that, in turn improves the University team. In exchange for their monthly coaching, Surrey encourages our players to join Guildford as their club side, to compete in the UK National Tour. This is not obligatory, however, and many Surrey players play for clubs nearer their own home town. Guildford Ultimate was founded in 2009, and in the space of two full seasons has established itself as a Top 5 club in both indoor and outdoor mixed UK competition. In 2011, Guildford finished 5th at UK Mixed Indoor Nationals, and 4th at UK Mixed Outdoor Nationals – which would have been a European Qualification spot had 2012 European Club Championships not been moved to 2013. GU has links with a locally-based Great Britain international, who regularly volunteers his talents to coach both Guildford and Surrey. Surrey and Guildford’s recent successes have certainly been intertwined; by creating a higher standard University side which in turn feeds better players into the Guildford system If no, what potential club links would you like to create? Does your Club have a coach? If yes, please provide details below: Coach Name How long has s/he been with the club? Yes Qualifications held* *We must see copies of qualifications No Hourly rate (if known) Links (if any) to outside clubs What, if any, National Governing Body(s) (NGB) are the club affiliated to? To enter these tournaments our members need to be members of UKU and pay a small fee in order to do so. More experienced players, such as those who have played for Great Britain, offer a wealth of knowledge which we could benefit from. As we attempt to make the first team more competitive to compete at the top end of our region fitness will play a key role in succeeding over a tournament weekend, as well as the skills and tactics which we develop within the club already. £80 Through former players and friends of the club we know a couple of individuals who would be suitable to fulfil this role. We would be looking to seek to work with Team Surrey and the Sports Park into developing a fitness plan for our members through a couple of sessions early in the year.
