Unit 176 February 15, 2015 Q 1 Table Talk Quarterly Newsletter of the Dallas Bridge Association, Vol. 21 Q 1 Texas Star If a unit is lucky, they have lots of members who pitch in and help when asked. If they are VERY lucky, they have that special someone who never needs to be asked. Dallas Unit 176 has that in David Greims, this year’s recipient of our Texas Star. David is just completing his 6th year on the Unit Board, serving his last two years as vice-president. He has worked hard on committees, serving wherever needed and preferring to stay behind the scenes, but most of us know him as the King of Equipment and Supplies. David made sure we always had everything we needed and that it was in great shape. If you have attended a Dallas tournament, you’ve seen David’s handiwork – tables and chairs delivered to the site, placed perfectly, with cards, bidding boxes and stanchions ready to go for the very first session. When you headed home on Sunday at the end of the Swiss, David (with wife Sue, who is just as indispensable to us as he is) was loading the unit trailer, with every box and table already cleaned, and every cup and coffee pot back in its designated place. He has taken care of us for years and this spring, turned this part of his duties to a stronger back. It’s hard to believe he won’t be there to take care of every little detail, but we know if we need him, he always will be. Thank you, David, from a very grateful Unit 176, for all your years of service and dedication. We are so very proud of you. Table Talk Dallas Unit 176 is proud to nominate LaRue Stott for the ACBL Goodwill Member of the Year. We know there are a number of members across the nation who have been playing more than 60 years, but there are few who have been so actively involved in the game and the bridge community in each and every one of those years. LaRue is such a player. LaRue seriously fell for bridge in the 50’s. Along with a couple of her friends, she started a duplicate club in Denton. They became directors and ran several games a week. They were hooked. In the early 80’s she moved to Dallas and found a perfect niche for herself – she began to run the partnership desk for Dallas tournaments and has done it innumerable times since. It was a perfect match for her charm, her organizational expertise, her listening skills, and her endless patience. If anyone is asked to describe LaRue, the first words are always how nice she is, and how very kind. She has played with the best players and with some of the worst, and yet her smile never fades. No one comes to the table without being given a warm welcome. She currently plays ……. ………………………………………continued on page 3 Inside this issue Around the Tables/ Unit GameWinners/ L. Table Talk February 15, 2015 www.dallasbridge.org Page 2 LaRue Stott continued from pg 1 …….. at least 5-6 days a week with a variety of partners. Some are regular partnerships, but some are players who just want the chance to play with her and she is always happy to oblige. She never gives unsolicited advice, but is happy to help if asked, along with some delicate words of encouragement. A beginner is treated just as a strong player – with respect. In 2004, the Dallas Bridge Association awarded LaRue its highest Unit honor – the Texas Star. She was cited then for always going the “extra mile” and we all know that extends far past the bridge table. An excellent example: A member had a son getting married and couldn’t afford a dress for the very special occasion. LaRue heard about it and took the initiative to speak privately to others. That member attended her son’s wedding in style. This is just one case in many. She constantly gives without expectation of anything in return. Dallas has several clubs and LaRue supports all of them. She participates in the individual Mentor programs and is always one of the first to volunteer her time and talents to better promote bridge. She often enlists the aid of her three daughters to help with caddies, food, and anything else that might improve enjoyment of the game. The Dallas metroplex certainly encompasses a large area, but everyone knows LaRue. In 2010, she went over 5,000 master points to become a Diamond Life Master and was feted by all the Dallas clubs. Players from outside the unit attended to honor her, because it is always such a pleasure to be around such a warm and welcoming attitude. She is not only a fine player, but she is something much more important: she is a wonderful human being. LaRue - Hope all your birthday celebrations were as much fun for you as they were for us. We look forward to celebrating your next - but we won’t rush it. The Language of Bridge At the start of the new year, let’s take a moment to refresh our understanding of some bridge vocabulary. ~ written by Dorsey Shaw “Below the line” is not the part of a boot that’s under the water. A ”call” is not the phone ringing. A “come on” is not an invitation for a date. The “cut” doesn’t involve a knife. “Drop” doesn’t mean throw it on the floor. “End Play” has nothing to do with the derriere. A “fit” has nothing to do with your temper. “Hold up” doesn’t get you the money! “Honor” has nothing to do with your reputation. “Offside” is not a 5 yard penalty. A “partial” is not dental work. A “pass” will not get your face slapped. “Passed out” doesn’t mean you had one drink too many. “Plain suit” — no fancy buttons? “Ruff” is not the opposite of smooth. “Sacrifice” isn’t a burnt offering - or maybe it is? “Second hand” doesn’t mean used. “Semi Balanced” isn’t describing our husband’s mother. A “signal” requires no lights or flags. “Tenace” isn’t the game. “Third Hand” isn’t ‘used used’. “Throw in” does not mean to give up. Finally, an “upper cut” is not a boxer’s punch. No one has ever deserved it more than David. He has worked so diligently for The Unit and for the bridge world. At every local tournament for many years, he has accepted the responsibility of setting up tables, the bidding boxes (cleaned, I might add) then seeing that the tables were removed and stored. What a job— and a job well done! David directs at Dorsey’s Bridge Studio. Dorsey said, “David is a man who not only does his job, he goes far beyond - he strives for perfection. Everyone goes on and on about exercise today. Of the body, that is. But what about exercise of the mind? One answer might be contract bridge. So you never thought to put bridge in the category of a mental callisthenic? Join the club. But a recent study conducted at Scripps College in Claremont, California, suggested that the game might be just that— an excellent way to increase working memory and reasoning. “There is reason to believe,” say authors Louise Clarkson-Smith, Ph.D., and Alan A. Hartley, Ph.D., “that bridge can enhance cognitive performance.” Fifty bridge players were compared to 50 non-players (both groups were between ages 55 and 91) in tests measuring working memory, reasoning, reaction time and vocabulary. Distinct differences were noted between the groups in memory and reasoning, but none were noted in either vocabulary or reaction time— elements not exercised while playing bridge. The authors also point out that there are different levels of bridge play. Some people use the game as a means to a social end: they keep up a running conversation during the game and make little or no attempt to keep track of the cards. Then there are the really serious players who keep mental records of what each player has bid and the cards played. They are “continually forming minihypotheses and modifying them as new information is obtained,” say authors Clarkson-Smith and Hartley. No wonder it takes a lifetime to perfect the game! ~ Shared by Dorsey Shaw FLT A 1st Bart Bramley, John Sutherlin 2nd Joan Jackson, Peggy Sutherlin FLT B 3rd Hua Yang, Yan Song Table Talk Due to space limitations, Standings for the Mini-McKinney Masterpoint Race will not be printed.
