The HA!Man (Francois le Roux) is a trained cellist and pianist who specializes in spontaneous music making (“HA!” is the feeling with which he performs). He has traveled constantly over the past 20 years throughout South Africa, Europe and North America with performances and workshops. His experience with school visits stretches over fifteen years, to all ages, from schools on the Cape Flats to high up in the Lesotho mountains, Afrikaans and English schools, private and special schools (disabilities). Standing relationships (annual visits) developed with a number of institutions including schools like St John’s College (Jhb), Roos Gymnasium and Bloemhof schools in Stellenbosch, school arts programmes at the Leysin American School, Switzerland, general workshops with home schoolers in Kent (England) as well as performance programmes at Sentraal Hoe”rskool (Bloemfontein) and the Lady Grey Arts Academy (Eastern Cape). Leading articles about his work appeared in the Sunday Times and Rapport in 2009 and a profile of him has been broadcast on Kyknet Television in January 2010. De Kat Magazine listed him as one of a 100 leading young personalities in South Africa as he also gives inspiring talks on being part of Africa, notably to the Mandela Rhodes Scholars and students at the President’s Award Programme. He performs independently with original music created and recorded by himself. Writes dr Bruce Copley, pioneer of the corporate drumming circles: I have known Francois Le Roux for a number of years and consider him to be one in a million. He is without question a musical genius.. and his work with children of all ages creates unforgettable and inspiring experiences for young minds and hearts. What happens with a school visit? Assembly performance: this option are usually chosen with a first visit by the HA!Man. He presents his music (providing his own sound equipment) but also engage children by inviting them to join him with spontaneous acts on stage. The assembly usually builds up a lot of energy as they all get a chance to move and even form a mass choir or “orchestra” together. Duration: 30 to 60 minutes (adaptable) General Workshop in Spontaneous Creativity: stimulates general creativity with more focus on individual and group participation. Groups size can vary up to 120 and various means of expression can be involved (music, dance, drawing, writing, drama). Duration: 90 to 120 minutes. Improvisation Workshop for specialized groups (choirs, music, drama, art and dance students), taking creativity to a deeper level with more intensive work in smaller groups (10 to 60). Duration: 120 minutes or more as required. Combination programme: workshops build up to a HA!Man concert where participants are also involved. This event can be public (evening), a fund raiser or also a collaboration with the school choir and/or orchestra. The HA!Man has presented several such events with great success in the past, locally and abroad. The success actually belongs to the children involved, as they usually come up with expressions on stage that stun and inspire all.. Writes Danika Swanepoel from Grahamstown: it was absolutely awesome being able to free my mind & spirit and play at anything that was on my heart... I have to say it really is... WOW!!! Thanks a lot and I like you to come again! 10 min VIDEO: “HA!Man workshops in spontaneous creativity” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ag9d98wcdA0 View feedback and recommendations at: http://www.hamanworld.com under “Feedback” How much does it cost? The basic cost for a performance is R2000 (N Am $300 / Europe €250 / UK £200), for a workshop also R2000. Some schools might not be able to afford this, in which case a suitable fee can be negotiated. Schools with bigger budgets can adjust the price upwards, indirectly sponsoring visits to poorer schools. For a combination programme a special amount is negotiated. All necessary sound equipment is provided for, suitable for small and large groups. In conclusion There exists a great need with today’s youth to express themselves more from the heart, to dive into the unknown. Not all in life can be planned, explained and instructed. From the realm of the unknown and subconscious, the HA!Man’s presentation strongly contributes towards more self confidence, the discovery of hidden talents, sensitivity to feelings of the self and others and the promotion of authentic living (of course, all that besides the entertainment and pure fun!) “By way of feedback, comments alluded not only to Francois' impressive talent as a musician and composer, but to his masterful ability to conjure spontaneous creativity from any situation. For the sake of opening new doors for learners and educators, I heartily endorse the mission of The Ha!Man, and recommend that time and space be made available at schools for this invaluable educational contribution.” (Teacher, Bishop’s Prep School, Cape Town) www.hamanworld.com
