At the battle of Yorktown, Cornwallis’ forces
were surrounded by French led American
troops and the French navy.
Cornwallis’ forces held out for several weeks,
but eventually surrendered, thus ending the
British threat for war.




Treaty of Paris ratified by Congress almost 8 years
since Lexington and Concord (1783).
Britain recognize the U.S. as an independent
nation.
U.S. retained land belonging to the original 13
colonies and gained all British territory to the west
(new border Atlantic Ocean (east), Mississippi
River (west), Canada (north), and Florida (south).
U.S. agreed to pay for loyalists property that was
destroyed (this was mostly ignored).






Why the Americans won???
