What We’re Learning
in 1st Grade
Reading
-Comprehension Skill: understanding characters and main idea/details
 Home Connection: After reading, ask your child to tell you who
the characters were and why they think they did what they did.
Ask what the story was mainly about and ask them to find
details that support this. Challenge them to ask an “I wonder…”
question about something they think a character could do next.
-Word Study: review short a and i sounds and introduce the r blend
 Home Connection: Have your child create words by using these
vowel sounds. What sounds/letters can they add to it to create
a word? Then use that word in a sentence (say it and write it).
List words that begin with the br, cr, dr, gr, and tr sounds.
-Word Wall Words: animal, of, how, some, make, why, away, call,
come, every, hear and said
 Home Connection: Practice reading the word wall words,
spelling them, and writing them in a sentence.
Writing
-writing complete sentences
 Home Connection: Encourage your child to list nouns and verbs
and combine in a sentence that makes sense.
Math
-Topic: subtract facts to 20
• Home Connection: Roll two dice and then roll one die. Subtract
how much you rolled on one die from how much you rolled on two.
Provide your child with an equation and ask them to create a story
to go along with it.
