Instructions to complete Federal and State tax forms Before you start this process make sure you have at least one hour available to go through all the steps. This should not take that long but it is preferable not to rush through the process. Step 1 Got to www.olt.com and click start free edition on left. You will need to pay $7.95 at the end, since the International form 1040NR is not free and cannot e electronically filed. Step 2 Create user name Create Password Enter your email VERY IMPORTANT CLICK FORM 1040NR Enter code and click create account Step 3. Accept terms and Agreements Step. 4 Log in information. Write down the information and continue. Step 5 Click on Start my Return Step 6 Select sections that apply to YOU. Save & continue return Step 7 Price of website The cost of the website is $7.95 to do federal tax returns and another $7.95 to do the state tax returns. You will pay for this at the end. Read carefully and continue Step 8 Primary Information Read and click the ones that apply to you. You should check all except dependent and extension. Step 9 Contact information. Write down your information. Save and continue Step 10 Tax treaty Choose no Save and continue Step 11 Green card Choose no Save and continue Step 12 Most cases should be yes Save and continue Step 13 Fill the required information. Taxpayer identification number = social security number Student Identification pin leave blank Answer all questions with your own answers. Primary tax payer is you. Student: yes and you can put 12 months unless you just arrived to US in August 2012. International students are not eligible for EIC(Earned Income Credit) so answer NO to both. Save and continue Step 14 Enter your Current address Step 15 Write down you country NO Yes Continue Step 16 READ CAREFULLY AND SELECT THE ONE THAT APPLIES TO YOU Step 17 Click NO and continue. IF YOU ARE CLAIMED ON ANOTHER U.S. TAX RETURN THEN CONSULT A TAX PROFESSIONAL – THESE INSTRUCTIONS ARE NOT FOR YOU. STOP HERE! Step 18 Review all the personal information that you wrote down in the previous steps and make sure it is correct. TRY TO DO IT ON YOUR OWN. Step 20 Select ADD NEW W-2 and continue Step 21 Click to block auto calculation copy information from every box of your w-2 exactly how it is into the website. Make sure to scroll down and enter state tax information. Step 22. If you have more than one W-2 (you get one W-2 per employer (MSU and Sodexo you had in 2012) repeat step 20. If you only had one W-2, Select Done with W-2 Category and continue. Step 23 International Students do not qualify for any of the following so scroll down and continue. Scholarship and fellow ship grants. Contribution scholarship does APPLY NOT Step 24 itemized deduction/ standard deductions. Save and continue return Step 25. Itemized deduction This amount should be the same as the state tax withheld from your W-2 if not auto filled write in the state tax. Step 26 Gifts contributed Summary Charity gift no. Continue Step 27 Gifts contributed Leave this at 0 and continue. Step 28 Form 8283 – NonCash charitable contributions Make sure to select NO and continue. Step 29 You do not have to do any of these forms, unless they apply to you. If they don’t, just click done with non chash donations Step 30 Form 4684. Do not fill out this form. Save and continue. Step 31 Employee business expenses Do not fill this form. Save and Continue. Save and continue Step 32 BUSINESS USE OF HOME FOR EMPLOYEES OR PARTNERS Business use of home: no Save and continue. Step 33. Itemized deduction Scroll down and continue. Do not change anything Step 34. Itemized deduction check list. You don’t have to do anything here. Just click done with itemized section. Step 35. Tax section You don’t have to do anything here. Just click done with itemized section. Step 36. Credit section Do not fill any of the forms. Just scroll down and continue. Step 37. Other credits. Do not fill any of the forms. Just scroll down and continue Step 38. Other taxes. Do not fill any of the forms. Just scroll down and continue. Step 39. Payment section checklist Do not fill any of the forms. Just scroll down and continue. Step 40. Miscellaneous section. Do not fill any of the forms. Just scroll down and continue. Step 41. Form 2210/2210F Underpayment of Estimated taxes Click do not File form and continue. . Step 42. This page will tell you if you have a refund or you have to pay federal taxes. DO NOT worry about the warning. It just means you will have to print the forms when you are done and mail them. Save and continue Step 43 If you get a refund, you can choose how you want to get your refund. Direct deposit takes the least amount of time. Step 44 If Step 43 says you are due a refund you can have it deposited directly to your bank account. Select if it is a checking or savings account. Routing number goes here. Account number. You can ask your bank for this information. Check the last box. If you have a state refund, the website will use the same information to deposit your state refund. Step 45 Recommended to click no for paying next year taxes. It keeps things easier. Save and continue. Step 46. Review and print your tax form This is where you can click on the completed forms to print them out. Click save and continue to finish the State forms. Step 47. State information Click on revisit Step 48 Check the box and continue. Step 49 State tax return Yes, I would like to complete my MN return Save and Continue. Step 50 Save and Continue. Step 51 no Step 52 Make sure the None option is selected. Save and continue. Step 53 Minnesota State – M1NC Do not change anything. Save and Continue. Step 54 Read and check any if they apply. Most likely it is NO on both. Save and Continue. Step 55 None of these apply to International Students. Scroll to the bottom. Done with all sections. Step 56 This Page will tell you if you get a refund and how much or how much you need to pay. If you need to pay taxes, select the first option. You can send the check with all the forms in one envelope. Step 57 Click on every link individually to open them. You can print them. Save and continue. Step 58 This page indicates your State tax has been prepared. Save and continue. Step 59 MAKE SURE THE FIRST OPTION IS SELECTED. TO AVOID ANY PROBLEMS, YOU SHOULD MAIL YOUR TAX RETURNS, FEDERAL AND STATE BY MAIL. Save and continue. Step 60 Write down your debit/credit card information and pay. Whenever you log in, it will take you directly to Step 57, where you have access to the completed forms. Step 61 – Mailing your tax forms. In one envelope put in your 1040NR, 8843 and a copy of your W-2 forms. Send to : Department of Treasury Internal Revenue Service Austin, TX 73301 In another envelope, put in a copy of your 1040NR form, MN1, MN W and a copy of your W-2. Send to: Minnesota Individual Income Tax St.Paul, MN 55145 IT IS A GOOD IDEA TO HAVE A COPY OF ALL THE FORMS YOU SEND AS A REFERENCE FOR NEXT YEAR.
