The new report shows:

• Sessions
• Regular Searches
• Sessions – Federated and Automated
• Literature Discovery
• Searches – Federated and Automated
• Infometric Use
The Sessions, Active IPs, Active Users, Active Registered Users and Regular Searches should match the previously reported
numbers very closely. Regular Searches is the same as Searches Run in the previous report, but is now named according
to the COUNTER terminology used in report PR1.
Literature Discovery and Infometric Use are new metrics and they are defined in the next paragraph.
Federated Searches is no longer included in this report as it can also be found in the COUNTER PR1 and 1b report.
These are the same metrics as in the old report (with the exception of Regular Searches being the new name for the
old metric Searches Run). All new metrics will therefore match the previously reported numbers very closely.
Metrics definition
Regular Searches and Searches – Federated and Automated are defined in PR1 report description.
Sessions is defined in report 1a description.
Metrics definition
Sessions are defined as a series of consecutive actions of one and the same user as identified by a unique session cookie
that is accepted by the user. A session starts at the moment of a first request of a user and ends after 120 minutes of no
activity. Note that the concept of session does not apply to federated search activity. Therefore, the Sessions – Federated
and Automated metric will always return a 0 value.
Note that the concept of session does not apply to federated search activity. Therefore, the Sessions – Federated
and Automated metric will always return a 0 value.
Active IPs in a month is defined as a distinct count of IP addresses from which one or more page request originated during
that month.
Active Users in a month are defined as users that made at least one page request during that month and accepted a user
machine cookie. The report metric counts all active distinct machine cookies. Please note that users can also refuse machine
cookies, refresh it after every session or share it (e.g. library computer). Therefore, this count is only an estimate of the real
number of users.
Active Registered Users in a month are defined as users that made at least one page request during that month and logged
on using a username and password. The report metric counts all active distinct registered users. Please note that a registered
user who refuses machine cookies is not included in the count of Active users.
Regular Searches is the same as the metric in the PR1 report above.
Literature Discovery is the sum of Document Record Views and Outward Links to Documents. The breakdown of these
2 metrics can be found in the new report 5a.
Infometric Use is an aggregate number for the use of Scopus analytical tools. A breakdown of this metric can be found
in the new report 4a.
