What is Know Your Onions?
Know Your Onions is an interactive Web-based unit that
teaches grade 5 students how to use nutrition labels on
packaged foods to make healthy choices. In this gameshow-themed unit, students will learn about the different
components of the label and apply this knowledge as
they practise comparing and choosing foods.
Know Your Onions meets Ontario health curriculum
expectations.
What are the computer requirements
to play Know Your Onions?
You will need a computer with:
• High-speed Internet connection,
• Screen resolution of 1025 x 768 or higher
• One of the following Web browser versions or higher:
- Microsoft Internet Explorer 8
- Mozilla Firefox 13
- Google Chrome 21
- Safari 5.1.7
• Adobe Flash Player 11.5 or higher
• Speakers or headphones are also required for the
narration.
Is the game designed to be played in the
classroom, at home or both?
Know Your Onions is designed to complement in-class
teaching but it can also be played at home.
How should I prepare to teach
Know Your Onions?
Once registered, your best preparation is review the
Teacher Guide, which outlines the big-picture concepts
that surround this complex topic. The guide also
includes helpful teaching tips. The students will learn
the fundamental information as they complete the game
itself; however, you may also find the additional teacher
support materials, including learning activities and an
assessment quiz, helpful. You can also play the game
yourself if you wish!
How do I get started?
First, you will need to register on the Know Your Onions
Web site as a teacher at knowyouronionsgame.ca.
Once you are registered and logged in, the Quick Start
Checklist, Teacher Guide and learning activities outline
the details and options for implementing the game.
To get started, register and then log in to the site.
Registration allows for :
• Speedy sign-up process for students
• Tracking of student progress

•Students to play without providing personal
information such as email addresses

How long does it take to play the
entire game?
Know Your Onions is designed to be completed in a
