SURREY SCHOOLS’
CRICKET ASSOCIATION
thanks the following organisations
for
their support and assistance during the past year
ESCA, RAM International, Surrey CCC, Surrey Cricket Board, Surrey County Cricket Trust
& also
thanks the following clubs and schools for the use of facilities
Banstead CC, Horsley & Send CC, Malden Wanderers CC,
St George’s College, Surrey CCC, Whitgift School
Chairman’s Remarks:
After the trials and tribulations of 2012, I am pleased to say that 2013 has been good year for
the Association.
Competition entries held their level with a number of new schools becoming involved,
particularly from the prep. school sector. Some of the emerging schools are still overcommitting, resulting in a number of defaulted matches in the early rounds. There was a
secondary school competition for girls’ teams for the first time, and the schools involved have
asked about additional competitions. None of this happens without the work of the various
Competition Administrators (Jim Hammond, Richy Riseboro, Simon Beck, Duncan White &
Charles South), and the co-operation of teachers in schools. Their support is very much
appreciated.
In the National competitions, Whitgift maintained their stranglehold on the U13 David English
Bunbury Cup with an emphatic 93 run victory over Warwick School, Sam Hall scoring 134. We
wish them luck as they carry the Surrey banner again in 2014. Whitgift also reached the Final of
the ECB/ESCA National U15 T20, and shared the trophy with Shrewsbury School after the Final
was rained off. Trinity reached the National Finals of the 8-a-side Pairs competition for the first
time, but could not bring back the trophy.
The Surrey U15 squad took the honours among the CAG sides by winning the Yorkshire Bank
County U15 Cup. The Surrey U11 squad also deserve mention for winning the Taunton Festival
for the 4th successive year. More details of the Surrey CAG season can be found in this booklet.
In the professional game, it has been encouraging to Rory Burns, Arun Harinath and Zafar
Ansari continue their 1st XI development from 2012. Burns received the LV= Award for
‘Breakthrough Player of the Year” also Matthew Dunn was given 1st XI opportunities, but pride
of place among the Academy graduates must go to Dominic Sibley. He was stretchered off
after only 5 minutes of his 1st XI debut in the YB40 competition and then returned to play in the
last 3 Championship matches of the season, finishing the season with a record-breaking 242 v
Yorkshire. At 18 years and 21 days he became the youngest double centurion in Championship
history (taking the record from SSCA ‘old boy’ David Sales), and second only to WG Grace in
English First Class cricket. Michael Carberry (ex-Croydon) has also been selected for this
winter’s Ashes Tour.
Congratulations to Tom Homes, Ryan Patel and Amar Verdi on their selection for the London &
East Region U15 squad for the Bunbury Festival, and also to Dominic Sibley and Jack Winslade
for their selection for England Development Programme for 2013-2014 which could include
selection for the U19 World Cup in February 2014.
I should also acknowledge the continued support of Paul Taylor and his staff at the Surrey
Cricket Board. All schools currently affiliated to SSCA are also affiliated to the Board and any
school joining the revised ‘Chance to Shine’ programme is now expected to affiliate to SSCA.
We are currently in the process of negotiating an improved benefits package for schools.
As the Association enters its 81st year, the demands are still increasing. With schools asking for
additional competitions (e.g. Girls’ U15), as well as other support, we must encourage schools
and local leagues to help themselves. The Association may be able to provide some
organisational, and, perhaps, financial support, but we cannot take on more without additional
manpower. Our President, Officers and Competition Administrators, with the support of the
Surrey Cricket Board, do an excellent job at present, but we do need input from people with
wider knowledge of girls’ cricket, and also primary and prep. school cricket.
Finally, thanks must go to Val Baxter at Whitgift, for her support over this past year.
Phil Everest (Chairman)
School Competitions Report
In 2013 the overall number of competition entries was almost identical to that of 2012, with
minor variations in individual competitions. The drops in entries for the U15 NatWest Cup and
the U11 Verney Cup were disappointing, but the U15 entries seem to have transferred to the
T20 competition. There was also the interesting innovation of the U14 Girls’ competition.
The vastly improved weather this year allowed all competitions to be completed on time, and
this includes the completion of the 2012 U13 Plate which was won by Riddlesdown Collegiate.
The ECB / ESCA National U15 T20 featured an outstanding performance from Howard of
Effingham in reaching the semi-finals, comfortably defeating Reigate GS and Charterhouse
along the way. The Howard journey came to an abrupt halt in the semi-finals when they were
beaten by a powerful Whitgift performance. In the Final at Ashtead CC, Whitgift came up
against RGS Guildford. After losing the toss, RGS were asked to bat and made a good start,
reaching 87-3 in the 13th over. However, tight Whitgift bowling restricted RGS to on 122-6.
Whitgift also started strongly with the bat, scoring 45-1 from 6 overs. Wickets then fell steadily
and Whitgift eventually needed 11 from the last over with 3 wkts left. After a run-out this
became 8 needed from 2 balls with U14 seam bowler James Culff on strike. The next 2 balls
went for 4 and 6 to take Whitgift to yet another trophy. They were also to go on to win the
NatWest County Cup with a comprehensive victory over St George’s College. The U15 T20 Vase
again went well with schools qualifying either as local tournament winners or as 1 st Round
losers. The four schools reaching Finals Day were Glyn, Weydon, Rutlish and Southborough.
Unfortunately, Southborough withdrew on the morning of the Finals, and the 3 remaining sides
played a round-robin tournament which was won by Glyn School.
The U14 Anderson Cup went smoothly, Trinity beating City of London Freemen’s School in one
semi-final, while Cranleigh overcame Whitgift in the other. Unfortunately the Ashtead pitch
was the winner in the Final, but the greater skill of the Cranleigh side rightly took the trophy.
The Finals & Semi finals of both the U13 Watcyn Evans Trophy and the U12 Bunbury Jubilee
Trophy were played as successful one-day tournaments. Rokeby, who made the semis of both
competitions, brought their U13 side back from the Wye Valley to beat first Trinity, then Reed’s
to take the Watcyn Evans Trophy. Whitgift continued their domination of the U12 Bunbury
Jubilee Trophy with a fine win against Rokeby. Howard of Effingham took both the U13 and
U12 Plate competitions with good wins over Glyn and Rutlish respectively.
The U11 Geoff Richards Trophy, strengthened by entries from Cranmore & Feltonfleet, went
well apart from one group where only one match was played. On Finals Day, Trinity &
Feltonfleet each won 2 matches and tied their head-to-head, but Trinity, with a superior run
difference, took the trophy for the first time. The U11 Verney Cup was won by Whitgift won
defeated Northcote Lodge.
The new U14 Girls’ competition attracted 7 entries with Salesian (Chertsey), The Priory CE and
Weydon contesting Finals Day. Although all sides played some quality cricket, Salesian had the
better all-round strength and became the first winners of the competition.
An especial vote of thanks should go this year to Richard Jones & Geoff Rouse at Horsley &
Send CC who staged FIVE SSCA Finals Days. To be able to use such a lovely double pitch venue
so often is very much appreciated.
Thanks should also go to Jim Hammond, Richy Riseboro, Duncan White, Simon Beck and Charles
South for all their help ensuring that competitions ran efficiently.

Hobbs Trophy:
The annual Hobbs Trophy match for State School representative sides from Surrey and London
returned to The Kia Oval this year by kind permission of Surrey CCC, -- and the excellent
weather!
The Surrey side, selected from 8 different State school across the county, won the toss and
elected to bat on an excellent pitch with a short boundary to the gasometer side of The Oval.
Ross Trimmings (Rutlish) and Wesley Hayes (Howard of Effingham) made a sound start before
Trimmings was dismissed for 16 in the 13th over with 50 on the board. Josh Pratt (Oakwood)
then joined Hayes and the scoring rate began to climb. Hayes reached his 50 from 60 balls,
while Pratt was using his feet well to score all round the wicket. Hayes went on to become the
first player ever to score a Hobbs Trophy century before retiring on 101 from 97 balls. Pratt
passed 50 from 48 balls before Shaz Rana (Shirley HS) was bowled for 7 with the score on 228.
This brought in skipper Amar Verdi (Guru Nanak Sikh Academy) to join Pratt for the last 5 overs.
There were only 2 dot balls as Pratt (87*) and Verdi (39*) plundered 56 from those 5 overs to
take the Surrey total to 284 – 2 from 40 overs.
The London side made a steady start and, after 10 overs, were only 2 runs behind Surrey at the
same point. The batsmen were unable to accelerate against accurate bowling from Aaron Rose
(Glyn) and Joe Lavender (Teddington) and, at the halfway stage, the required run rate had
climbed to almost 11, but only 1 wicket had fallen. 3 wickets from Glyn spinners Luke Tuck and
Tom Homes reduced London to 109-4 with 10 overs left. London opener Marcus Denton
(Bonus Pastor) got to his 50 from 92 balls but he was fighting a lone battle. When he eventually
holed out in the 39th over trying to get to 3 figures, he had made 90 from 131 balls. When the
innings closed on 165-7, only one other London batsman had got to double figures.
Surrey CCC Chief Executive Richard Gould presented the Hobbs Trophy to the winning Surrey
captain, Amar Verdi, the Man-of the Match award to Wesley Hayes, medals to all players from
both sides, and medals to the umpires.
The successful 2013 Surrey Schools’ side with the Hobbs Trophy.
SSCA wishes to thank Richard Gould for making the presentations, and also Surrey CCC for their
continued support of this historic match.

A comfortable opening day victory over Hampshire at the Ageas Bowl saw Ollie Pope (68*) and Oskar
Kolk (52*) take the plaudits with the bat and Kyle Philander (4/56) impress with the ball.
A draw with Kent at the Polo Farm in Canterbury saw Ben Curran hit an unbeaten 105 and Harry Allen
add 53 before Allen made a century, Matthew Stiddard 99 and Olly Batchelor 56 in a 119 run victory in
the two day ECB Championship over Essex at Reed’s School.
Allen (96) made yet more runs in a three wicket loss to Essex in the limited overs ECB Cup competition
before he made another century as Surrey beat Sussex at Blackstone Juniors CC, Sam Curran adding 90.
Sussex gained a revenge win in the cup, Stiddard scoring 67*, before both the Championship and Cup
matches against Middlesex at Reed’s School fell victim to the weather.
The final game against Kent was a ‘winner takes all’ affair with a place in the National Finals Day on the
line. Despite runs from Stiddard (74), Batchelor (50) and 4/58 from Allen, Surrey lost by 80 runs and
ended second in the South Table. A final loss, in the cup competition, left them bottom of the pile
without a win in the limited overs format.

After a wet start to the summer, when they were rained off from a good position against Hampshire, the
U15s recorded a clinical 117 run victory over Berkshire with Will Jacks (78) Matthew Clarke (61) and Sam
Curran (60) all in the runs.
A loss in their final friendly of the season – against a combined side from the London and East Region –
was put behind them and after another rain spoiled match against Middlesex, Surrey got their campaign
in the ECB Yorkshire Bank U15 Cup underway with a seven run victory over Essex at the City of London
Freemen’s School.
Further wins came against Kent and away to Sussex, with Ryan Patel scoring 99 and Tom Homes taking
an excellent 5/28. After the only loss of their campaign, to Middlesex, Surrey then recorded back to back
last over away wins over Kent and Essex, with further good performances from Curran and Patel.
More rain caused the home tie with Sussex to be abandoned but a Quarter Final victory, over
Buckinghamshire, saw Surrey reach the finals event at Kibworth CC in Leicestershire.
A tense 2-wicket semi-final victory over Staffordshire set up a Final clash with Kent for the National title.
After Homes and James Culff had taken 3 wickets each to restrict Kent to 166, it was, once again, lefthanders Patel (63*) and Curran (62*) who put in star performances as Surrey cruised to a decisive eight
wicket victory.

After a poor start to the season, with rain ruining the opening fixture against Suffolk and then two losses
to Buckinghamshire and Essex – despite 58 for Will Jacks in the last game – the U14s went on a four
game winning streak. They recorded wins over Hertfordshire – featuring 110 from Angus Dahl and 64
from Bilal Mohammed – Berkshire, Cambridgeshire – with another century from Dahl – and then
Hampshire, a 96 run victory fuelled by 120 from Freddy Austin.
After a defeat to Middlesex and a rain ruined encounter with Kent, Surrey beat Sussex at the City of
London Freemen’s School, lost away to Norfolk and then ended the season with a four wicket friendly
win over Kent, Sam Hall (an U13 batsman) scoring 80* and George Elliston leading the way with the ball,
taking 4/21.

The U13 summer got off to a disappointing start with a seven wicket loss to Whitgift School, but a
victory over Kent at Canterbury, Nathan Tilley top scoring with an unbeaten 63, got the season on track.
After suffering a seven wicket loss to Sussex at Haslemere CC, Surrey rebounded by defeating the same
opposition away at Blackstone Juniors CC by 137 runs, with Jamie Smith scoring an excellent 103* and
Rehan Ratnasabapathy also impressing with 64. An away victory over Essex saw Tilley hit 77* and was
followed with two more wins over Buckinghamshire and Kent. After two losses, to Middlesex and
Berkshire, Surrey bounced back to defeat Hampshire at Wimbledon CC, Sam Hall scoring 94*, before
they suffered a second loss to Middlesex, this time by 30 runs at Sutton CC.
The season ended at the Taunton Festival – with Surrey securing four wins out of five. The Festival
started with a 135 run defeat of Cumbria – with centuries for both Tilley (124) and Freddie Boys (112).
After a loss to Lancashire, Surrey then reeled off three straight victories over Worcestershire, Hampshire
and Devon. The victory over Hampshire was highlighted by a second double century innings of the
Festival with Boys (100) scoring a second and this time being joined by Smith (132*), who notched his
second ton of the summer.

The U12 season got off to a good start with a 135 run victory over Whitgift School and two more
victories over Buckinghamshire and Middlesex. A loss to Berkshire was overcome by a five match
winning streak over Middlesex, Essex, Wales, Kent and a 46 run victory over Hampshire at Solent
University where Lucas Wilson became the first U12 centurion of the season with 111.
After a loss to Kent and a win over Sussex at Banstead CC, the U12s joined their U10 and U11 colleagues
in heading west for the Taunton Cricket Festival. The Surrey side left with great credit, beating
Hampshire, Gloucestershire, Devon – where Sam Fanning scored an unbeaten 90 – and the touring St.
Stithians School from Johannesburg. Their only defeat of the festival was in the second game, a narrow
three wicket reverse to Lancashire.

After opening with wins over Whitgift School and Hertfordshire, including fifties from Marc Purves and
Harry Mead, Surrey suffered their first loss when they played Hampshire at Cranleigh CC in late June.
However, they bounced back with four consecutive victories over Berkshire, where Purves became the
first U11 centurion of the year with 114, and then Middlesex, Essex and Hampshire. A loss against Kent
broke the winning streak but five more back to back victories over Sussex (home and away), Essex,
Wales and Warwickshire made sure their excellent season continued.
Although they went into their Taunton Festival campaign on the back of losses to Buckinghamshire and
Middlesex, Surrey performed very well in the West Country. The first match saw them record a four
wicket victory over Kent, with Matthew Stephenson taking 4/34, before they went on to beat Cornwall
the following day by 133 runs with Williams scoring an unbeaten century, Tom Chandler adding 73 and
Abishek Sabesan leading the bowlers with 5/15. Further wins over Gloucestershire and Oxfordshire saw
more runs for Purves in both matches and 71* for Rahul Desai against Oxfordshire before they ended
the Festival – and their season – with a five wicket loss to Lancashire. Despite the final day defeat,
Surrey were nonetheless crowned Festival Winners for the fourth successive season.
