Year 6 SATs 2017 What are SATs ? • SATs test knowledge, understanding and application in Maths, Reading and Punctuation, Grammar and Spelling • They are reported alongside Teacher Assessments. • Tests are rigorously conducted. • Tests are externally marked by trained markers. What do they include? • An hour long reading comprehension • A half an hour arithmetic test (pure calculations) • Two forty minute Maths ‘reasoning’ papers • A forty-five minute punctuation and grammar test • A spelling test Things have changed in the last few years… A few examples… English punctuation, grammar and spelling Reading Arithmetic Maths - Reasoning What will be reported? • A score will be given for each of the papers. • A scaled score will be given. • A ‘Yes’ or ‘No’ as to whether a child has met the expected standard for end of year expectations in Year 6 will be given. What does ‘Yes’ and ‘No’ mean? • It means that the child has or has not achieved a score (to be decided after the tests!) that means they met the ‘expected standard’. Sanity check 1 • A ‘yes’ or ‘no’ is very black and white. At Northmead we want children to make as much progress as possible, but are fully aware that may not mean everyone achieves a ‘yes’. Alongside the test scores your child achieves, we will also report a teacher assessment and detail the progress each child has made against the assessment system we use in school. Sanity check 2 • Some find test situations very difficult and may underachieve. • All staff do everything they can to reduce the stress. • We talk to secondary schools before the test results are published. Timetable Monday 8th – Thursday 11th May 2017 Mon Reading Tues EPGS Weds Thurs Maths 1: Maths 3: Arithmetic Maths 2: Reasoning Reasoning Fri How can I prepare my child ? • Continue supporting their homework. Keep reading and discussion going. • If you choose to do practice tests stress the positive. Do not allow it to become confrontational. • Only do revision if your child is in the mood. Set agreed times for homework and revision. • During the week before and SATs week keep bedtimes sensible. • Have a relaxing time before bed. • Ensure your child has a good breakfast and brings a snack to eat at break time. Bananas are good. Also, for this week only, we will allow chocolate! • Do not do last minute revision. To keep everyone sane! • If your child is ill on the day please bring them into school and arrange to take them home straight after the test. • Plan something nice for everyone at the end of SATs week so you all have something to look forward to.
