Junior Committee Report
In many ways it is traditional in this final report for the season not to dwell on the
successes of the last five months, but rather focus very much on what is planned for years
ahead. This report is no exception especially noting that many of the developments that
will influence next year are well in train.
Much of this is of course due to our Club relaunching this month a new Strategic Plan in
which we set some very clear guidelines where we wish to make progress, not the least
being number one Club for our Juniors.
For example, we look to put in place initiatives in growing our Junior Club, focusing on
targeting wider geographical areas of the community and make a huge presence in the
schools. Likewise we look at holding summer touch modules for the juniors in 2009,
including Friday games at Liston Park, both in summer and winter seasons. A good
opportunity for families to get together before the weekend.
Most families have been hit hard with downward trend of the global markets, and the
increase in fuel prices, a result we noticed to date that the children are struggling to get to
trainings and their Saturday games. An issue that needs addressing from the Club’s point
of view in 2009, where we can assist with transport to get the children to their games and
make their dreams come true.
Obviously it is early days and still a lot more can and will be done to propel us to becoming
the number one Junior Club, but I want to leave you with a very clear impression that your
Marist Club is certainly well advanced in moving along this new direction.
I would be remiss if I make no mention of the success of the teams this year, which is
highlighted in the team reports included in this programme – in part demonstrates that
success has been achieved and will stay with us.
Certainly we are in a nice position to launch into 2009, looking forward with enthusiasm
towards those developments mentioned above but at the same time taking pride in how
our Club is very well supported by the Marist Community, in its 100th year.
Thank you to parents for their continued support, to coaches and managers for all their
hard work this season. Without you, we will not be able to achieve the success of the
teams noted below.
Special thanks to the Junior Committee:
Sharon and Shane Wilson
Theresa and Wayne Tamapeau
Happy Father’s Day to all the fathers for Sunday, and we look forward to welcoming you all

There’s no doubt about it, these boys really enjoyed their rugby. This was shown by the
determination, skill & the sense of fun they displayed during each game. Our attack play showed a
lot of great runs, often from one end of the field to the other, with plenty of side steps and pace to
out run the opposition. Equally in defence, the boys always gave maximum effort.
All the members of the team improved in their ability throughout the season and it was great to see
their confidence increasing with every game. Well done to all boys, you should be very proud of the
way you played. Many thanks to the parents and supporters who were always there cheering the
team on from the sideline. Special thanks to John Sullivan for helping coach & referee games and
to Jobe family for donating the Player of the Day trophy.
Also our thanks to Eva & Theresa for their support & management of the junior teams.
Good on ya Mighty Marist Black for an awesome season of rugby.

We had a large team this year, some experience from last year and loads of new boys. We
also had supportive and dedicated parents who battled all sorts of weather and conditions to
follow the boys each week - which was greatly appreciated by the coaches, and of course the
boys.
Despite a few missed games, the team gelled together really well and all the boys got plenty of
time on the field to display their new skills. It was great to see the boys look out for each
other and this was demonstrated with everyone getting across the line this season for bragging
rights.
The first few games had boys running keenly in all directions (with or without the ball). By the
end of the season the "keen-ness" was still there but the direction had improved dramatically
and the focus was on getting the ball towards the line! It was also great fun playing the
games later in the season in real rugby conditions - rain and loads of mud.
There was a great mixture in the team of characters, a couple of speedsters, some real
powerhouses, a couple of great commentators of the game and a couple of socialites intent on
distracting the opposition with social interaction mid-game. So with these recognised
strengths the boys had their share of wins to celebrate, and the occasional loss which was
equally celebrated.
So well done to all the boys and we hope they all had a great season. It was a very enjoyable
year, loads of laughs for the boys and parents with every boy developing their skills and
having fun doing so. Our thanks to the club and Eva for supporting the team and I am sure
we will see a number of this team back again for next season.

This year was the first year for all our players to play our great game and we all had fun, sweat and
tears. We all go to Monte Cecilia Catholic School and so it was great to train at our school every
Thursday rain hail or shine. We won most of our games and all the players contributed something
special in there own way. A taste of Rugby and being with our mates was what it is all about in a
team environment, good to be part of the Marist Club, here’s to next year, Go Marist Monte Cecilia

At the enrolling for the 2008 season it was pleasing to see a large number of boys wanting to play
7th grade for our Club. There were two teams entered this year and while Marist U7 Red fielded
only 7 players, our boys played with the pride and enthusiasm that more than compensated for not
having subs on the side line. At the time of preparing this report our boys had over a very wet
winter played 8 games for 3 wins, 2 draws and 3 losses. They scored 68 tries and we wonder
what could have been achieved if we had been able to play a full season.
There were many highlights throughout the year but undoubtedly seeing the improvement in the
standard of rugby played, the determination against teams with up to 14 players and seeing their
never give up attitude week after week was just the best.
Our Player of the Year - Siosifa Faka’iloatonga was out standing in every game, he was our top try
scorer and his skill and ability will certainly be seen in higher grades in the future. Our most
improved players Dylan Casey and Bronson Mephan always gave of their best, they never missed
a practice and Dylan began his development on the field as a determined and solid halfback while
Bronson showed his speed to score his tries, usually in the corner. The sportsmanship award was
shared between Joel Casey and Joseph Masi – two more boys who never missed a training
session. They scored their share of tries and their sportsmanship and enthusiasm in all games
was just exceptional. Francis and Osamu were also key players in our team. They were
enthusiastic, enjoyed their games and from the set play of scrums and line outs formed the basis of
our back line and straight hard running was their trade mark.
To our Parents : I wish to thank the parents who stepped up to help in the running and organising
of the team this year – Richard Masi Coach and Rachael Mephan Manager did all that they could
to keep the team on the field and playing to their best. Andrew Casey was a great help at training
and taught us all some great skills ideas and training patterns. Every week rain or shine we always
had parents, brothers and sisters on the side line supporting, cheering and encouraging our boys.
I thank you all for the assistance and friendship you have shown this year, I was proud to be
associated with this team and I trust next year we will be able to do it all again and give the Under
8 Grade a good shake.
To our Club – the Marist Brothers Old Boys Rugby Football Club, our Committee, Life Members
and Members - the 2008 Under 7 Red Team congratulates you on 100 years of proud rugby and
we wish our Club all success for the future.
To Eva and the Junior Committee thank you for your help and guidance in what has been another
great year for our Marist Club.

This season was seriously interrupted by the weather, it either rained on Wednesday or Saturday
or both meaning that Marist Blue had more games cancelled than they played!
Regardless of the poor weather the boys had a great season and played with skill, passion and
sportsmanship when ever they got the chance to get on the pitch. Amusingly the boys seemed to
play better the Saturday after a Wednesday where training was cancelled rather than when they
trained regularly - perhaps Rest and Rotation only works for future All Blacks not the real thing!!
Some highlights of the season included:
- Matthew Fenton's spectacular long range try against Manukau Black
- Radisson aqua-planing in for a try against Pakuranga
- Tesi's long range try scoring
- Seth's 4 tries in the wet against Pakuranga
- Dylan's non-stop defence against Pakuranga
- Mila's never say die attitude in defence
- Kallis' work rate - for a wee fella he certainly gets involved
- Matthew Gravestock's determination to get to the try line
- Kenny's barn storming runs against Tamaki Red
A huge thanks to the families for all their support - sometimes the noisy from the sidelines was
deafening.
Thanks to David for his excellent refereeing.

A season of two halves - results wise and weather-wise. The season started with some big wins, with lots of
tries on dusty, hard fields and finished with wet pitches, cancellations, soggy practices and results not going
our way.
But a good season was had through all this - with some spectacular individual efforts, some gutsy
performances and every one enjoying themselves. Some of the better results included a 13-0 win with tries
to Haele 5, Tipi, Peter 5, Jonny and Sione. Haele and Peter did tend to get most tries - Peter being a great
worker and Haele being a rocket in the clear - but others chipped in as well. Theo Tamapeau showed great
game sense and often was seen tackling, getting up and going straight after the ball. Marcel showed a
knack for the go forward and crossed for a few in 2008 as did Jonny who also showed great spirit in stopping
many opposition moves. Generally all the boys got stuck in and hopefully will be back next year and the rain
will pick another day to fall on. Thanks to Haele's parents for the Player of the Day prize.
Big thanks to Ross for learning the oval ball game and coaching and to Seamus McNamara for reffing etc at
a moments notice - usually as the kids were running on to the field.

The St Joseph’s Under 8 team is made up of two 5 year olds, three 6 year olds and the rest 7 with some who
turned 8. This is mainly why we struggle to play against the teams in our grade. This was a challenge that
we took on every week. In the weeks of playing, we have seen our little boys improve and grow in their
games. One memorable game was at our home ground, we started the game against Marist with 4 reserves
which was made up of our 5 year olds. 10 min into the game, we had no reserves because they were all
playing in the jungle gym, understandable due to their age. We can see so much potential in all of them and
hope to see them all next year.
Thanks

The Team has had another great year, this being the fourth year most of the boys have played
together, and it is starting to show in their skills and combinations and not loosing a game for three
years .
With the boys always working hard on the basic skills at practice, it really showed on game day,
there was always someone in support of the ball. There was often games where more than six
boys scored tries , and no one shirked their duties in defence either, quite often finishing the game
with no score against them.
It has been quite a wet season with a few cancelled games, including the Pompallier which we
were looking forward to our first tournament, but the boys turned up nearly every Wednesday
evening for training and to the parents who stood in the rain on those cold wet nights and helped
with the training. We thank you, your boys are the better for it Milan ,thank you for refereeing again
this year ,even though most of our home games seemed to be on the cancelled weekends, and
Fran who helped on the field on game day.
To Waka, Rob, Paul , John ,Karl and the rest of the dads who helped at practice and game day,
not to forget all the mums as well Lizzy ,Bernadette, Simone ,all the little thing you do so well. To
the grandparents Uncles and Aunties who travel across town every weekend to cheer on the whole
team and help with the scoring ,subs etc To Kristene ,our Manager your organising skills never go
unnoticed ,a magnificent job again this year.
The boys in the team deserve the biggest thanks for being so keen to learn and enjoy every game
they played no matter what the weather was like, you made our season enjoyable as well.

This team of young vibrant boys have most of their games, with only defaulting Waitakere due to financial
problems. Most of the dynamite's players started this season as 7 year olds and have matured into excellent
ball handlers and hard hitting tacklers. This team was coached by Sam Huihui-uia and Dion Taiere. Both
coaches have worked hard to prepare these boys for their Saturday games.
This season is the second season these boys have played together and due to their commitment and love
for the game, they have braved the rain, cold and wind to have a very successful season.
A BIG thank you to parents and supporters for being every Saturday, cheering the 'DYNAMITE' team on and
we know that this continue through to our new season next year! 'Kia kaha Dynamite'.

The first award is for the best back. this boy played in may different positions from lock to half back first five
and second five, he was not only a great attacking player but also a very good defender. His ability to score
tries from nothing is truly outstanding, at times he looked like a one man team but as we all know it takes 10
on the field to make a team. The player is Jeff Taefu.
The second award is for the best forward. This boy started the season showing promise. an ability to run
with the ball and not afraid to take the ball in hand and run from anywhere. he was aggressive in all aspect of
his play and has developed into a very good player. His tackling had also improved considerably from when
he first started. Sometimes a bit of a knock from an opposition player is all it took to get him going. This boy
I feel we’ve developed into a very good rugby player his name is Tom Staite.
Most improved player. This was a very hard decision to make. There are a few boys in the team whom this
is there first year playing rugby and watching them all developed into good players is really heartening for a
first year coach also. Also some of the boys who have played for a couple years have also grown in
confidence as the year has gone on. The most improved player for our team this year is Liam Jamieson. I
have watched this boy grow in confidence as the year has gone on, his running with the ball in hand catching
and passing and most of all his ability to pull off try saving tackles has really impressed. Liam started the
season slowly but by the end of the season really cemented his place on the wing.
The under 10 restricted team had a great season this year with only 1 loss all year. They beat all the top
teams in our round including college rifles, university, Carlton and Pakuranga. most of our wins were by
healthy margins but we also had some very close games too. The game we lost was to one of the university
teams when we only had 9 boys show up at the end of the school holidays and with the other university team
having a bye that week they had numerous subs to choose from. We had previously beaten the same team
bye 13 tries to 3. Sometimes a bit of a lose is a good thing it makes you take stock of where you are and it
brings you back to earth ("with a thump").
In the later part of the season we have not played many games, since the university game at the end of the
school holidays we have only played 1 game against college rifles which we won 16 tries to nil. The boys
had a ball in the rain and the mud as only boys can. With the second last game of the season cancelled and
having the bye for the last game our season has ended prematurely, there is still a lot of rugby left in our
team for this year, we hope to have a few "friendly" games before summer sports start. As this was my first
year coaching rugby I have thoroughly enjoyed all aspect of coaching, the highs (lots) and got over the lows
(not to many).
Coaching a team from a club with only one team in its grade has had it's draw backs especially when I
comes to training and having the ability to swap players from team to team, as some clubs have a numerous
teams to draw upon.
I would like to thank all the parents who showed up every Saturday and to every training without fail, with out
parents like you there would be no rugby or any sport, I know some times it feels like you are a taxi service
for your children, but it is very much appreciated, and being a parent myself of 4 children myself I know how
rewarding it can be. it's the small things you do sometimes that can make the biggest difference.
(15)
We had a very good sponsor for our player of the day award, Canterbury apparel donated sweet shirts and
rugby jerseys for the deserving players, so thank you very much to them.
Finally I would like to thank Jo Kendall our team manager for helping me with our team. your help with the
team has been very much appreciated, from cutting up oranges on a Saturday to sending out the odd news
letter and ringing around parents etc, all work done in the back ground by managers is often never seen and
it is always the players then the coaches who are recognized first, so thanks again Jo.
Looking forward to 2009 full fields and 15 aside this will be a true test for our team of light weights.
A great year

The team started with some players who had played together in previous years being introduced to
some new players. We had a couple of close games in the preseason for a win and a loss but were
brought back down to earth with big losses to Marist St Josephs and Ponsonby. Those games
showed the team where the work needed to be done and subsequent games showed some good
improvement. The forwards got to grips with working together to secure the ball and the backs
were able to get the ball out wide to the speedsters on the outside. Unfortunately the second half
of the season was a washout and the team will be disappointed they didn’t get to build on the
improvement they were starting to show.
Every player contributed and put in good performances at various times throughout the year but
the outstanding players who consistently performed were:
Sale Finau the flying winger who made a habit of scoring tries with over 20 throughout the season.
His speed and a great step made him a constant threat.
Jefferey Tuitavuki in the forwards was excellent at securing the ball and forcing turnovers and
tackling till he dropped.
Most improved goes to Agnes Ili who converted from a back to a forward and reveled at being in
the thick of things.
A big thanks to all the parents and supporters who gave great support. This ranged from bringing
the kids to trainings and games to giving great vocal support from the sidelines to helping out with
trainings.
Finally I would like to thanks the players. This was a great group to work with and they gave it their
all for the team. Often to the brink of exhaustion. I enjoyed working with them all and hope they
enjoyed playing in the games we did get.

The nucleus of this team was made up from the boys from our under 9 open team from 2007 with a few new
members. We began our 2008 season in a state of urgency and excitement at the prospect of building on
our end of season performance from last year.
The team very quickly re formed as a unit and were always looking to assist each other on the field as well
as off it. We went through the season undefeated although we were robbed of a few games by the very wet
winter we have just experienced. Our boys really developed a healthy team spirit as well as a sense of fair
play and sportsmanship. This combination helped them to overcome some teams which were touted as
being difficult to beat.
We had comfortable victories against almost all of our opponents and many of the boys have begun to
develop specialties in certain positions. A number of them are developing sound leadership skills combined
with the ability to read the game. All in all the Marist St. Joseph's under 10 open team had a very successful
season in 2008 and we look forward to further building on this in 2009.

Marist SHC U-12 played some good rugby in their first year together. The number of cancellations
deprived the boys of making the championship round however some impressive results augers
well for 2009.
Highlights of the year included excellent wins over College Rifles, Grammar, University, Pakuranga
and Waitemata. Lessons were learnt against front runners Ponsonby and Carlton. In particular the
matches against Grammar, University and Pakuranga the boys played with great control with the
forwards dominating the opposition and the backs scoring some great tries.
The team was captained well by Christian Kelleher with great support from openside flanker James
Kaufusi and No.6 Charlie Lennon. Lock Joshua Diack performed consistently all year as did front
row forwards Francis Perez, Matt Dowd and Alex Rivers. The backs scored some great tries over
the year with Henry Boyhan leading the way with 25 touchdowns in 12 matches. Fullback Matt
Lynch was superb on both attack and defence and winger Tinashe Chinyanganya showed all the
boys how to tackle!
The coaches would like to congratulate all the boys on a successful first season as a team. Have a
good summer and we look forward to bigger and better things in 2009!

We started the year with the goals of running the ball to daylight, creating an enthusiastic squad
who enjoyed there first year of
St. Peter’s rugby and having a defence that committed itself to tackling. We went along way to
fulfilling these goals.
The squad was very mixed in its ability and experience. Some had never played rugby before,
some were inexperienced but willing and there were others that would have been great players in
any team.
We tried to ensure that every player got game time each week. Rather than have a team of 15 we
were genuinely 22.
There was a big mix of results but we can honestly say that this team never lay down and died in
any game. There were some games in which we started badly in the first half but then Spirit, Pride
and Commitment kicked in and we would finish strongly. It was interesting to watch the
opposition’s (and their coaches) reaction to the venom that ensued from this team when we were
behind. It was almost like we could be two teams.
In attack we were the only team that regularly scored our tries from 40 – 60 metres out from the
tryline. Our game plan became very simple, forwards work hard and then get the ball out to
Michael and Isaac, our very own show of “thunder and lightning”. If we could get the ball out wide
we were dangerous.
There are some excellent combinations forming in the squad that will only improve as the years go
on and these young men continue to build their game. Stanton “Big Stan” with Sam and Aaron will
form a formidable tight group in the forwards, the more they learn to operate together the more
dangerous they will become to opposition teams. They are tireless and powerful forwards. Jarred
caught the attention of Mr Srhoj’s eye for his running and pugnacious display in the forwards.
(20)
Seven and Connery were always the two mightiest warriors on the field, at halfback and first-five
respectively, prepared to tackle anything for 60 minutes and to hit the line. James was Mr
Consistency at lock whilst Austin provided versatility in the front row. The same versatile comment
could be said of Joe who played 2/5, Centre and Wing. Breyton proved himself to be a key part of
the team with his excellent performance at fullback. Rory was always committed in the loose and
played good tight football in the number 7 jersey. Vernon, Lachlan and Andres showed major
improvement as players as the season went on and Xavier showed a valiant hear on defence in
every time he took the field. Angus showed deft moments with his footwork and passing. Jamie
played out of position but was a key contributor with Ethan and Joel in a powerful front row, ably
backed by Rory.
The key to the future for these players is to have “fire in the belly” at the start of each game and for
the team to work together in showing off their talents.
We wish to thank all the players for their 2008 effort and their parents who regularly came to the
games and supported their son’s.
Good luck in your rugby futures, we look forward to watching your progress.
A huge vote of thanks goes to Mr Trethowan for being manager of this team and being a fine
sounding board and ideas man at the games. Your help was invaluable.

Commentaries:
On behalf of the Coaches & Manager we would like to thank both the players and their parents for
an enjoyable season. It was a really good bunch of boys who turned up for training every Tuesday
and Thursday – they were all a pleasure to work with.
The boys always had fun at both training and on game day and have built good friendships with
some of the boys Charlie, Obed, Siviki, Solomon and Tyron playing together since Nursery/Under
7 grade – a great thing to see!

We started the year working hard on fitness initially as a few boys were over the allowed 55kg
weight limit. The boys hated the thought of doing 14 laps of the ground together with shuttles and
sprints to build fitness at each practise, not to mention ‘Cornwall Park’ runs and the sauna/steam
sessions to make the required weight – however this helped build team spirit and camaraderie
early in the season.
For the first round of championship the team played 9 games for 7 wins and 2 losses. Pleasingly
we had convincing wins against fierce rivals Sacred Heart College 33-5 in a tough and spirited
game and beating University 17-5 to remedy a pre-season loss.
The team built on the solid start to qualify for the semi-finals where we lost 17-0 to top of the table
Carlton. This at the time of writing was the best result achieved in the season against Carlton who
are an exceptionally good team. It was a strong and spirited showing by the boys in atrocious
conditions, particularly the forwards who were not bettered on the day. The team was unlucky in
the first half with a try being scored from a wobbly kick against the run of play and twice being held
up over the try-line in the second half. It was great to see the improvement in the players/team
from the start of the season and their focussed commitment.
We had a number of talented players in the team and our congratulations go to the following boys
who were rewarded with selections in the following representative teams – we are all very proud of
you.
We wish the boys well in the representative teams who play games in the coming weeks – good
luck in your tournaments!
To the team and parents we would like to wish you all well for the future and for those boys going
to college next year enjoy your rugby and make sure you return to Marist!

Commentaries:
2008 has been a mixed year for the Marist Sacred Heart team in a grade where the competition was
particularly strong. Once again we were not a big team and it took a couple of games to come to terms with
the size of the opposition. As the boys came to terms with this their results improved significantly and we
qualified a very credible 4th in the top six final play offs. It was unfortunate that weather proved to dictate the
final outcomes of the season with a number of games being cancelled.
It was pleasing to watch the boy’s rugby improve during the season and they played some wonderful rugby.
We also enjoyed fantastic support and encouragement during the season from all the boy’s families and
friends and they provided wonderful inspiration for the boys.
The boys have been a pleasure to coach throughout the season and stuck to their task very well.

Commentaries
This years Marist St Peters U13 Restricted team saw a fairly inexperienced group of players come
together. A large number of the team were in their first season of club rugby. Their eagerness to
learn the game of rugby was apparent from the first training session and even after numerous
heavy losses was still in existence at the final training session. The season started well with a
narrow loss against Eden, but then we found ourselves playing against some very good sides. The
boys of St Peters showed great character throughout these tough times, always returning to half
way determined to put up another strong fight.
The team was superbly led by No 8 Josh Bing, a natural leader who’s on field leadership was an
inspiration. The front row was well led by Josh Cartwright, also consisted of Joshua Carvalho,
Calum McKay and Noah Meggitt gave their all throughout the season, battling at every scrum. Our
locks grew with confidence through the season and by the end Joshua Taylor, Braydon Rose and
Jakob McCaffery were superbly competitive at lineout time, while Joshua and Braydon enjoyed
running with the ball in hand. The strength of this team lay in our loose forwards. Outstanding
seasons were had by both Louis Neighbours and Sam Cameron, the both ran with devastating
results and were responsible for a huge amount of turnovers in each and every game. Flankers,
Mitchell Molloy and Zane Haturini, both new to rugby showed great improvement in confidence and
ability through the season.
Our talented backline unfortunately did not have enough quality ball to show and develop their
skills. Conner Kelly, who always battled above his weight, made many telling runs from halfback
and provided 1st 5 Matthew Kennelly with great service. Matthew stepped into 1st 5 as we lost
Jacob Cantlon very early in the season to injury. He showed great promise through the season
and I am sure he will continue to grow as a 1st 5. Our centre pairing of Dylan Lafele and Leroy
Jack made many line breaks and were very solid on defence. Outstanding utility back James
Cartwright played in every position apart from halfback. He made courageous tackles and ran hard
with the ball not matter what position he was asked to fill. Timothy Houghton, Liam Borne and Jack
Barrett largely played on the wing but were occasionally asked to fill a gap the in the midfield. All
three boys show great improvement with Timothy and Jack putting in some punishing tackles.
Timothy Leahy made fullback his own by the end of the season, developing great positional play
and a love for running the ball back hard.

Commentaries
This season was one we all would like to forget. The weather has made us spectators and not
players. We have had a strong squad of young players but they haven’t had a chance to show
there best. We started the season with a default, and then two loses but then started to play as a
team winning our next three championship games before the weather played its part. Our last two
competition games were cancelled and with that any chance of making the championship round.
Being a school team in a club competition we find it hard to put a competitive team on the field. We
start late so it takes a couple of games to catch up to our opposition. This year’s team has the
potential to become a very good side. Next year they will play in the schools competition and I
believe they will do very well.
We have enjoyed being given the opportunity to represent the Marist club and appreciate all you
have done for us.
