Shoes, a record, and guiding
The trip to the High Tatras started yesterday in the early morning. Everyone could
choose one of two possibilities. The first one was a simple hike from Štrbské Pleso to
Popradské pleso and back. The second alternative was more difficult – from Starý
Smokovec and Hrebienok through Skalnaté pleso to Tatranská Lomnica. The second
group could enjoyed the beauty of nature such as perfect sight during thieir ascent,
they could see many brooks with pure water and a waterfall. In the middle of the
way there was a chance to see a lot of hill-sides. However, the most beautiful sight
they could enjoyed was when they reached Skalnaté pleso. There is an observatory
on Lomnický štít that tourists can visit. It is the highest inhabited place in Slovakia.

After a longer rest and refreshment, this
group went down to Tatranská Lomnica.
The path was hemmed with many rocks
which made the descend more difficult.
Some of us used the possibility to get from
Skalnaté pleso to Tatranská Lomnica by a
funicular.
The team from Poland together with some
organizers decided for the third
alternative, they went to the cottage under
Rysy. The fastest part of this group
reached the cottage in record time 1 hour
10 minutes (normal time is 2 hours 15
minutes). During this way they had to
confront with many obstacles such as
snowdrift and bad weather. In spite of this
they were satisfied with this trip. Some
people from this group instead of the
Rysy cottage reached the Slovak national
hill Kriváň (2494 m).
We have found that some participants of CEOI do not read our NEWS because if
they had read the warning, they wouldn’t have put on ellegant woman shoes .
We have a new record: one team knew the High Tatras in twenty minutes. Then they
secretly came back to Košice by train a few hours earlier instead of returning
normally by our bus. 
And in the end the critics to ourselves: one of the authors of this article guided one
contestant from Skalnaté pleso not to Lomnica but back to Hrebienok. 

Kurt Gödel
Born: 28 April 1906 in Brünn, Austria-Hungary (now Brno, Czech Republic)
Died: 14 January 1978 in Princeton, New Jersey, USA
Kurt Gödel was born to a father who
owned a textile factory and had a
fondness for logic and reason and a
mother who believed in starting her
son's education early. By age 10,
Gödel was studying math, religion
and several languages. He entered
the University of Vienna in 1923,
where he completed his doctoral
dissertation
under
Hahn's
supervision in 1929 and became a
member of the faculty of the
University of Vienna in 1930, where
he belonged to the school of logical
positivism until 1938.
He is best known for his proof of
Gödel's Incompleteness Theorems.
In 1931 he published these results in
Über formal unentscheidbare Sätze
der Principia Mathematica und
verwandter Systeme. He proved
fundamental results about axiomatic
systems showing that in any
axiomatic mathematical system there
are propositions that cannot be
proved or disproved within the
axioms of the system. In particular
the consistency of the axioms cannot
be proved. Gödel's results were a
landmark
in
20th-century
mathematics,
showing
that
mathematics is not a finished object,
as had been believed. It also implies
that a computer can never be
programmed
to
answer
all
mathematical questions.
Among other areas, he contributed
to
the
relativity
theory,
demonstrating
the
„timeloop
solution“
of
Einstein’s
field
equations.
In 1940 Gödel emigrated to the
United States and held a chair at the
Institute for Advanced Study in
Princeton, from 1953 until his death.
He received the National Medal of
Science in 1974.

Bardejov
Bardejov, the centre of the Upper Šariš
region is located in the north-eastern
part of Slovakia in the downs running
along the right bank of the Topla River
beneath the Lower Beskyds, 277m above
the sea level. It has about 32 000
inhabitants.
The earliest written record dates back to
1241 and can be seen on the yellowed
pages of the Ipatyiev Monastery
Chronicle. The extensive territory of
"terra Bartfa" can be found in written
records dating back to 1247. At the turn
of the 13th and 14th centuries colonists
from Silesia settled down near the
settlement
lying
on
the
main
communication route. In 1320 King
Robert granted them extensive rights
which speeded up the process of
transformation of the chartered village
"Bardejov" into a town. In 1352 the town
obtained the right to hold the 8-day fair
and the guarantee of freedom for all
who took part in it. The safety of trade
and craftsmanship and the town
independence were protected by town
fortifications with their impregnable
gates, massive turrets and water moats.
In 1365 Bardejov obtained the right of
capital punishment and in 1376 King
Louis I. promoted it to the status of free
royal town. In the 14th and 15th
centuries, the dexterity of the Bardejov
merchants and the development of
craftsmanship as documented by 64
professions and more than 50 guilds,
raised the town to the peak of its fame
and wealth. A number of silent
witnesses have been preserved from this
period certifying the "Golden Age" of
Bardejov. Among them are the secular
and ecclesiastical buildings which even
today impress the mediaeval character
of the town.

The most precious of them is the
monumental St. Egidius’s Basilica
Minor, which from the point of view of
its architecture, is a part of the national
heritage in Slovakia. Its 11 Gothic
winged altars with panel paintings have
hardly any parallels in Europe. The
artistic feeling and taste of the masters is
also witnessed by the church interior. A
special attention is attracted by the
rectangular
square
paved
with
cobblestones flanked on three sides by
burgher houses carrying traces of gothic
and rennaissance architecture. The 16th
century was marked by the flourishing
of culture, education and arts. One of
the most precious buildings is the Town
Hall whose construction was begun in
1505 by Master Alexander. On the
original
gothic
foundations
a
renaissance superstructure with a
beautiful oriel was built by Master
Alexius and Master Jan of Prešov. After
centuries of flourishing and fame came
the centuries of decline, poverty and
stagnation. Plague and other epidemics,
fires and wars almost destroyed the
town, which was falling into disrepair
both economically and socially and
Bardejov was gradually becoming
forgotten.
But Bardejov has not been completely
forgotten. In 1950 it was declared a
protected city core and an intensive
restoration of the cultural heritage was
begun. It was for the preservation of its
heritage that in 1986 Bardejov was
awarded the European prize - Gold
Medal – by the International Board of
Trustees in Hamburg. Bardejov became
the holder of this award as the first
town in the former Czechoslovakia. In
2000 the fortified town of Bardejov was
inscribed on the World Heritage List of
UNESCO.
Hervartov
Roman-Catholic church of St. Francis of Assisi, the
oldest wooden church in Slovakia built arround
1500. The nave interior from 1665 is richly adorned
with wall-paintings. From the original mobilia the
central painting of Virgin Mary amidst the saints
and four escutcheons from the former Gothic main
altar and a Late-Gothic suspension picture depicting
Stigmatizing of St. Francis have been preserved.
