Christian worship has been offered to God here for over 1400 years. By worshipping with us today, you become part of that living tradition. Our regular worshippers, supported by nearly 150 members of staff and a large number of volunteers, make up the cathedral community. We are committed to the diversity, equal opportunities and personal and spiritual development of all who work and worship here because we are followers of Jesus Christ. We are a Fairtrade Cathedral and use fairly traded communion wine at all celebrations of the Eucharist, and this order of service is printed on sustainably-produced paper. Thank you for being with us today. If you need any help, please ask a member of staff. Please be assured of our continuing prayers for you when you go back to your homes and places of worship. Andrew Carwood, Director of Music at St Paul’s Cathedral, will conduct the joint anthems. The organ is played for the service by Simon Johnson, Organist and Assistant Director of Music and before the service by Peter Holder, Sub-Organist. At that time a group of sons of clergymen recognised that there was a need for charitable help for the families of many members of the clergy who, having remained loyal to the monarchy during the Commonwealth, had been deprived of their livings and left destitute. The first Festival, held in 1655, was the charity’s founding event and there has been a Festival every year since then – making this, it is believed, the oldest service of its kind in the Anglican Communion. In accordance with the tradition of the Festival, the Lord Mayor and the Archbishop of Canterbury will process together in State, accompanied by the Sheriffs and the Bishop of Aberdeen and Orkney, the Bishop of Tuam, Killala and Achonry, the Bishop of Thetford, the Right Reverend Ian Brackley, the Right Reverend David Rossdale and the Aldermen of the City of London. Over 80 of the Livery Companies of the City will be represented by their Masters, Prime Wardens and Upper Bailiff. A feature of the Festival Service has always been a sermon by a distinguished preacher, and our preacher today will be the Archbishop of Canterbury, the Most Reverend and Right Honourable Justin Welby. The Festival Service is also known for its fine music and at today’s service this will be provided by: the Choir of St Paul’s Cathedral, directed by Andrew Carwood; the Choir of Birmingham Cathedral, directed by Marcus Huxley; and the Choir of St Edmundsbury Cathedral, directed by James Thomas. * * * * * The Sons and Friends of the Clergy is one of the oldest clergy charities, and set out on the back page of this Order of Service is some information about its work and about how you may be able to help support its efforts. 3 Sons and Friends of the Clergy (10 May 2016)_Sons of the Clergy (15 May 2012).qxd 03/05/2016 15:47 Page 4 At 4.40 pm, remain seated as the Processions of the Livery Companies and the Charity move to their places under the Dome. Sing to God, the close companion Of our inmost thoughts and ways; Who, in showing us his wonders, Is himself the power to gaze; And his will, to those who listen, By a still small voice conveys. Tell of how the ascended Jesus Armed a people for his own; How a hundred men and women Turned the known world upside down, To its dark and furthest corners By the Wind of Whitsun blown. Pray we then, O Lord the Spirit, On our lives descend in might; Let thy flame break out within us, Fire our hearts and clear our sight, Till, white-hot in thy possession, We, too, set the world alight. Christ is risen. He is risen indeed. Alleluia. Praise the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. He has given us new life and hope. He has raised Jesus from the dead. God has claimed us as his own. He has brought us out of darkness. He has made us light to the world. Alleluia. Christ is risen. He is risen indeed. Alleluia. Dear friends in Christ, we are gathered together in this holy place to offer thanks and praise to the glory of God in fellowship with the Sons and Friends of the Clergy, and to pray for God’s blessing upon its work of relieving the needy and strengthening the weak so that the ministry of the Christian Church may bear the fruits of the Gospel of Christ. We pray for our brothers and sisters in ministry and service in the worldwide Church, that they may have the resources they need to share the good news of Christ with all. We remember before God all those throughout the world who need our prayers: the sick and the suffering; the lonely and the bereaved; the homeless and the destitute – that they may know the love of God in Christ and his power to save. And we pray as we approach the great feast of Pentecost that, as God inspired men and women of faith, hope and charity to follow Christ and to support the work of the Sons and Friends of the Clergy, so may we be filled with the Holy Spirit and inspired with generous hearts and enlightened minds in the service of the same Jesus Christ our Lord. 8 Sons and Friends of the Clergy (10 May 2016)_Sons of the Clergy (15 May 2012).qxd 03/05/2016 15:47 Page 9 Let us pray. The Lord said to Moses, ‘Soon you will lie down with your ancestors. Then this people will begin to prostitute themselves to the foreign gods in their midst, the gods of the land into which they are going; they will forsake me, breaking my covenant that I have made with them. My anger will be kindled against them on that day. I will forsake them and hide my face from them; they will become easy prey, and many terrible troubles will come upon them. On that day they will say, “Have not these troubles come upon us because our God is not in our midst?” On that day I will surely hide my face on account of all the evil they have done by turning to other gods. Now therefore write this song, and teach it to the Israelites; put it in their mouths, in order that this song may be a witness for me against the Israelites. For when I have brought them into the land flowing with milk and honey, which I promised on oath to their ancestors, and they have eaten their fill and grown fat, they will turn to other gods and serve them, despising me and breaking my covenant. And when many terrible troubles come upon them, this song will confront them as a witness, because it will not be lost from the mouths of their descendants. For I know what they are inclined to do even now, before I have brought them into the land that I promised them on oath.’ That very day Moses wrote this song and taught it to the Israelites. Then the Lord commissioned Joshua son of Nun and said, ‘Be strong and bold, for you shall bring the Israelites into the land that I promised them; I will be with you.’ Deuteronomy 31. 14-23 10 Sons and Friends of the Clergy (10 May 2016)_Sons of the Clergy (15 May 2012).qxd 03/05/2016 15:47 Page 11 The Choir of Birmingham Cathedral sings Anthem Christus factus est pro nobis obediens usque ad mortem, mortem autem crucis. Propter quod est Deus exaltavit illum et dedit illi nomen, quod est super omne nomen. Christ was made for us obedient unto death, death on a cross. But God hath highly exalted him and given him a name which is above every name. Words: Philippians 2. 5-9 Music: Anton Bruckner (1824-96) The Second Lesson read by Sir John Chadwick, Vice-President, Sons and Friends of the Clergy See what love the Father has given us, that we should be called children of God; and that is what we are. The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him. Beloved, we are God’s children now; what we will be has not yet been revealed. What we do know is this: when he is revealed, we will be like him, for we will see him as he is. And all who have this hope in him purify themselves, just as he is pure. Everyone who commits sin is guilty of lawlessness; sin is lawlessness. You know that he was revealed to take away sins, and in him there is no sin. No one who abides in him sins; no one who sins has either seen him or known him. Little children, let no one deceive you. Everyone who does what is right is righteous, just as he is righteous. Everyone who commits sin is a child of the devil; for the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The Son of God was revealed for this purpose, to destroy the works of the devil. Those who have been born of God do not sin, because God’s seed abides in them; they cannot sin, because they have been born of God. The children of God and the children of the devil are revealed in this way: all who do not do what is right are not from God, nor are those who do not love their brothers and sisters. 1 John 3. 1-10 Stand 11 Sons and Friends of the Clergy (10 May 2016)_Sons of the Clergy (15 May 2012).qxd 03/05/2016 15:47 Page 12 Hymn Send, O God, your Holy Spirit On your people gathered here. O let it freely burn, Till earthly passions turn To dust and ashes in its heat consuming; And let thy glorious light Shine ever on my sight, And clothe me round, the while my path illuming. Let holy charity Mine outward vesture be, And lowliness become mine inner clothing; True lowliness of heart, Which takes the humbler part, And o’er its own shortcomings weeps with loathing. Sons and Friends of the Clergy (10 May 2016)_Sons of the Clergy (15 May 2012).qxd 03/05/2016 15:47 Page 28 Sons and Friends of the Clergy 1 Dean Trench Street, Westminster, London, SW1P 3HB Founded 1655, Incorporated by Royal Charter 1678 Patron: Her Majesty the Queen President: The Archbishop of Canterbury The charity now known as the Sons & Friends of the Clergy is in fact an amalgamation over time of six organisations. The first of these, the Corporation of Clergymen’s Sons, was founded in 1655 by a group of sons of clergy to support destitute clergy during the time of Oliver Cromwell. In recognition of its work, the organisation received a Royal Charter from Charles II in 1678. The most recent merger was completed in 2013 when the Corporation of the Sons of the Clergy and the Friends of the Clergy Corporation formally came together after a number of years of joint working. Today, Sons & Friends continues this long tradition of supporting clergy households. We see our purpose as promoting, sustaining and renewing the wellbeing of clergy and their dependants so that clergy flourish and thus are able to serve God’s people. Throughout our history we have done this by providing financial gifts to eligible households in times of hardship. In 2015 we gave 995 gifts totalling over £2.4 million. Changes to stipends in recent years and the availability of additional welfare support for low income households have significantly altered the pattern of financial hardship for our beneficiaries. We have therefore begun to explore a wider ‘wellbeing’ agenda, recognising that there are many factors that can significantly affect serving clergy, in addition to financial hardship. We are in the process of commissioning research and evaluating different options for the charity to support clergy in a wider variety of ways. The trustees of the Sons and Friends of the Clergy, formally known as the Court of Assistants, welcome support from all sources including donations from individuals, parishes, trust funds, companies and other organisations sympathetic to the work of the charity. Legacies are also most welcome. Following a donation of £100, any individual may stand for election as a Governor of the Sons and Friends of the Clergy. Once elected at an Annual Court, held on the second Thursday of November every year, a person remains a Governor for life and is entitled to attend annual meetings at which the work of the charity is reviewed and at which trustees are elected to serve on the Court of Assistants. THE 363rd FESTIVAL OF THE SONS AND FRIENDS OF THE CLERGY WILL BE ON TUESDAY 9TH MAY 2017
