REASONS TO PLAY HIGH SCHOOL HOCKEY
1) One of the best experiences for the players is that they get the opportunity to represent the high school
and community. Along with that sense of pride within the school is the fan support from classmates and
other community members.
2) Games are packed with student and teacher fans. The raucous crowds at a high school game are nothing
like the boring club games where it’s just the parents yelling and clapping
3) High school hockey allows your student to earn a Varsity letter. This can be a valuable addition to a college
application since admission boards will see a deep commitment to sports along with a balance of
academics and activities on the application.
4) Your hockey player will immediately become friends with upperclassmen and other students at their high
school. This provides confidence to those incoming freshman nervous about high school, and gives them a
club to be a part of.
5) High school is a time when young people are developing socially and mentally and a prospective college
athlete will be better prepared for a college campus if they lead a life engaged in school activities.
6) You get to play a sport you love with kids you go to school with.
7) Locker tags at school and game announcements over the loud speaker make the games seem like an
event, rather than just another club game that nobody knows or cares about.
8) Strict rules govern grades in relation to being able to play hockey. This provides the carrot for your hockey
player to maintain good grades if they want to play hockey
9) High School hockey allows your hockey player to play other sports. They are welcome to play football or
soccer in the fall and then join the hockey team for the winter season. You can’t do that with club hockey.
10) High School Hockey provides a great high school experience and opportunity for our hockey players.
11) High School hockey is growing in Colorado. There are more high school hockey teams in Colorado than at
any other level of hockey in Colorado. In the last 4 years, the CPHL has grown from 6 teams to 28 teams
and CHSAA has grown from 30 teams to 34 Teams.
12) Players learn time management and how to be a student athlete. High school hockey is very similar to
college in the fact that academics are monitored and a players' participation requires a GPA to be
maintained for eligibility.
13) High school hockey is covered by various media outlets in the area which adds to the overall experience
and exposure for the players.
