FUTURE FIRST
Year 9 Food Technology
students took part in a
Careers in the Food Industry
event. This was an event
organised through the
school’s
F u tur e
First
initiative. The students got
a
chance
to
meet
professionals from the
industry to hear how the
skills learned in school help
them in their current jobs.
Many students had their
minds opened up to the
way in which school
subjects, as well as Food
Technology will help them
do well in the industry. For
example communication
with people came up as a
repeated
key skill. Mr
Adams said “It was great to
see the Food Technology
students engaging so well
with the professionals and
listening to lots of advice.
The students clearly took a
lot from the opportunity
and the activities”. One of
our students said “It was
great to ask questions of
the professionals – I have
learned some things I didn’t
know before about the jobs
that exist in the food
industry”.

Year 11 mathematicians
attended a maths and yoga
weekend at Carnyorth which
was kindly funded by the
Truro and Penwith Maths
Hub. Over the course of the
weekend
the
pupils
completed a range of
mathematical tasks, ranging
from
writing
songs
to
help remember formulas, to
working through past papers.
The pupils also went on
a sunset and sunrise walk,
where they were quizzed
on
their
mathematical
knowledge
with
the
breath-taking views of the
Isles of Scilly and the fresh sea
air. In addition, the pupils
were lucky enough to have
yoga expert, Helen Clare,
along to do a couple of
workshops with them on
breathing, stretching and
relaxation techniques to help
them cope with the stress of
exams.
Everyone had a
great time and came away
refreshed and full of maths
knowledge!
In terms of revision, the weekend has really
helped by widening my ideas on how to revise Going for walks and learning how to
relax has helped me feel more prepared
for learning.

EDEN CLASSIC CYCLE
Mrs Wooders and Mrs
Bayfield, members of St Ives
School’s Penwith Velo Cycle
Club,
completed
a
challenging 62-mile Eden
Classic cycle ride on Sunday
7th May. The Penwith Velo
Club is open to students and
adults of all ages and any
ability; we meet once
weekly
on
alternate
Mondays and Tuesdays for
local rides and select routes
to suit all abilities. The Club
provides
a
range
of
opportunities to promote
cycling for youngsters and
families across Penwith and
we are very keen to
welcome new members
whether they are new to the
sport or already cycling at a
higher level. If you would like
to join us, please speak to
Mrs Wooders at St Ives
School or contact Club
Chairman, Duncan Smith, on

Students from Year 7-10 had a
magical twilight tour of the
National Marine Aquarium in
Plymouth. There were 3 Marine
Biologists leading the tour,

behaviours of the exhibits. The
aim of the trip was to see the
underwater world after dark

Students in Year 10 spent a day
visiting one of the top maths
institutions in the South West,
Exeter Maths School. The
purpose of the visit was to
demonstrate the options that
are open to our students with a
keen interest in maths for their
further education. They were
treated to workshops in both
Mathematics and Physics, with
time. Friday the Turtle was also
a firm favourite along with the
Unicorn Fish and of course
Nemo the Clown Fish. We
found out that Sharks loose
teeth daily and will produce
approximately 20 thousand
teeth in their lifetime, and that
Clown Fish produce a mucus
which protects them from the
stinging tentacles of the
Anemones, (which is why
Nemo can live in a Sea
Anemone). Late into the night
pupils watched the film `Dory`

renewable energy and irregular
numbers. They were also given
the opportunity to talk with
tutors and students at the Maths
School who were on hand to
help to discuss career options
involving mathematics. We can
look forward to a bright
future for our promising
mathematicians.

AWARD WINNING KYBA TEAM
The St Ives School Reading
Group recently took part in
the Kernow Youth Book
Award (KYBA) held at
the Eden Project, this
year celebrating its 10th
anniversary.
This prestigious award is
organised by SLIC (School
Librarians in Cornwall) and
encourages young people
to draw from a long list
of contemporary teenage
fiction before selecting their
favourites to create a
short list of six finalists. Every
school taking part voted for

their favourite book and the
winner was announced at
the ceremony where the
authors gathered nervously
to await the results.
Participating schools from all
over Cornwall are invited to
perform a presentation of
their favourite book in front
of an audience made up of
the authors, teachers and
students – over 350 people
in total! Not for the
fainthearted.
This year the St Ives School
Reading Group chose to
present ‘The Lost and the
Found’ by Cat Clarke. They
decided to present in the
format of a song written by
themselves: a remarkable
achievement, which drew
the biggest cheer of the
event. We’re pleased to
report that St Ives School
won
th e
award
for
Best Presentation and the
excited students had the
opportunity to talk with the
visiting authors about what
had inspired them. Well
done everybody. We’re
already looking forward to
next year.

ATHLETICS SUCCESS
Congratulations to all the
athletes who took part in the
recent England Schools
Championships at Carn
Brea.
This
competition
attracts almost every school
in the county St Ives School
had a huge squad of 48
students across all year
groups from 7 to 10, each
athlete needing to compete
in two events for their team.
Athletics has seen a surge in
popularity at the school and
so the competition for
places was very tight,
especially as the teams are
made up of combined
years: 7 and 8, 9 and 10. The
two days of competition
produced a number of
h i g h l i g h ts
and
some
exceptional performances:
Toby and Nick clocking the
4th and 5th
fastest times in
the 100m, Bridget winning
the High Jump with a
personal best of 1.53m,
Aaron running a sensational

Festival
Competition. The categories
the students took part in
ranged
from
solos
to
ensembles. Rebekah, Year 9
received a distinction and 3rd
place
as
did
Sunny,
Year 9 in their solo woodwind
categories.
Whilst
Magdelene and Ruth, Year
10 received a Merit and 3rd
place for their flute duet. The
school woodwind ensemble
and
Flute
group
also
received merits in a closely
marked ensemble section.
This success is a result of hard
work and dedication from
both the students and the
support from the woodwind
teacher; Sarah Hanley who
works with the students each
week.
RISING BOXING STARS
6
Two talented students at St
Ives School took part in a
boxing event at Penzance
Leisure Centre. Ben and Kai,
both in year 11 competed
alongside boxers from Exeter.
Kai was first in the ring,
demonstrating lightening
footwork and good speed
throughout his three rounds.
This was vital experience for
Kai as he made his debut for
Cornwall a week later in
Bristol. Ben prepared for the
final fight of the night;
competing
against
an
18-year-old boxer. From the
outset, Ben was in full control,
showing a high level of
power and precision which
knocked his opponent to the
canvas in the first round. Ben
didn’t show any signs of

slowing down and during the
third and final round he
continued to show his
determination. At the ring of
the bell, Ben was declared
the clear winner in his first
ever fight. What a fantastic
feat for these rising sports
stars.

SKI TRIP 2017
A total of Fifty three students and seven staff
from St Ives School experienced a trip of a
life time to the Prato Neroso ski resort in Italy.
With heavy snow fall the day they arrived,
the conditions were perfect. The students
skiied or snowboarded for 4 hours every day
for 6 days making huge improvements and
progress and some tackling the slopes with
ease. Mid-week there was further snow fall
which enabled students to do powder runs
in the fresh snow. With slopes are graded on
difficultly from blue to black students were
challenged from the outset. Every students
had mastered the mid difficultly red slopes
by and the majority making the black run
look easy- a fantastic way to end the trip!
It was the most incredible trip ever!

Twenty two students undertook
and successfully completed
their
Bronze
Qualifying
Expedition in the Penwith area.
This expedition was the
culmination of many weeks of
training and a practice
expedition and means they
have completed one part of
their Bronze Award.
The teams started at two
different points on the Friday
with the year 10’s walking from
Drift Reservoir and the year 9’s
leaving from Chapel Carn Brea
near Lands End airport. All of
the groups were in good spirits
and were really looking
forward to the day ahead. The
teams had already planned
their own routes and followed

the coastal road.
After pitching their tents and
cooking their evening meals,
they entertained themselves
with games of Frisbee and
catch as well as socializing with
each other – and all without
the distraction of mobile
phones!
All of teams were glad to get
to the finish successfully and
their assessors that had been
overseeing them during both
days were very happy, giving
them the good news that they
had passed.
The following morning saw
them cook breakfast, pack
and prepare themselves for the
second day of walking. Today
all four teams were heading to
the finish at Carn Galver mine
but again following slightly
different routes. However, most

SUMMER SPORTS
FIXTURES
As part of the summer
fixtures calendar our Year 8
students have been taking
part in friendly festivals of
rounders
and
Cricket,
hosted by Cape Cornwall
School. The format is to play
a shortened game against
each
of
the Penwith
schools,
providing
an
opportunity
for
many
players to get their first
experience of hardball
rounders and cricket in a
competitive setting. The St
Ives
teams
produced
an
excellent level of
performance and it was
great to see Felix, Year 8
and Andrew, Year 7,
leading by example in their
role as captain of the two
cricket teams. Oliver, Year 8
showed total commitment
in stopping a hard driven
ball with his outstretched
leg, taking an injury but
electing to play on.
The Year 8 rounders team
included
Michel
and
Jennifer who played their
first ever match. Grace,
Freya, Katie and Erin
hit
several
rounders
and
showed
fantastic
competitive spirit to take the
girls into second place to
match the Year 8 cricket
result for the boys. Once
again, our students were
superb ambassadors for
their school and deserve
praise for their contribution
to extra-curricular sport.
Congratulations to our year
seven team of student s
who took part in this
year’s challenge to build a
waterwheel
at Geevor
mine.
The team

demonstrating
excellent teamwork and
engineering skills. All groups
did exceptionally well, but
special mention goes to
Amelia and Ruby, both in

ST IVES SCHOOL NEWS
Just before Easter we took
part in an exchange to
Toulouse, a city in the south of
France. We stayed with
French families for a week,
and enjoyed experiencing
French culture and the French
way of life. We visited the
local area and attractions,
and joined in lessons at our
partner school. The medieval
city of Carcassonne was a
particular highlight, as was our
visit to the local boulangerie!
Some of us were lucky
enough to visit the Pyrenees
with our host families,
where we learnt how to
walk through the snow
on ’raquettes’ and went
tobogganing.
When our French partners
visited us we enjoyed showing
them around St Ives and the
surrounding area and they
also visited the Eden Project
and Geevor mine.
It was a great experience:
several of the French students
are already planning to come
back during the summer and
many of the English students
have been invited back to
stay with their host families
during the holidays.
We
would strongly recommend
the exchange especially if
you are taking French at
GCSE.

EXETER UNIVERSITY
INSPIRES STUDENTS
The Humanities and Languages faculty took
a group of Year 9 and 10 students to Exeter
University in April to inspire students about
further education. To start the day, students
were given a tour around the amazing
campus which has recently undergone a
£48 million upgrade to facilities including
those linked to technology, the library and
sports. The culmination of this upgrade is in
the ‘Forum’ a social learning space which
incorporates all major services that students
need from shops, to lecture theatres that
can hold up to 400 people, as well as
outdoor lecture theatres and exhibition
spaces to show off students’ work. For the
second half of the day, students were split
into two groups – either Languages or History
– and experienced a seminar in their chosen
subject: this gave them an insight into the
content and depth of study as well the
opportunity to ask questions of current
students, ranging from their first to final years.
The trip has allowed the faculty to make a
strong link with the University and will be
running this trip again next year as well as
hopefully getting some of our budding Year
7 and 8 historians and linguists up to the
campus.
