MANAGEMENT NEWS
We recently held our Presentation Days for each of our Big V, Junior Championship and Junior Domestic
competitions. Each of these functions were well attended and they provide a great opportunity to thank and
recognise those deserving. Of particular note, I would like to congratulate each of Kathy Maffei and Greg Davis
on their awarding of Life Membership. Both of these individuals have put in many years of service to the Eltham
Basketball Club and we look forward to their continued involvement.
Our domestic teams are undergoing their grading process at the moment for the 2013/14 EDJBA Summer
season. This can see some one-sided results, with our teams both on the winning and losing sides. I would ask
that our players, coaches and spectators always carry themselves with class regardless of the situation of the
game, keeping in mind the relevant Codes of Conduct produced by Basketball Victoria and supported by the
Eltham Basketball Club.
Likewise, our Championship teams are just finishing off their selection process. This can be a long and drawn
out process, however it is important to note that our club provides more opportunities for more players than any
other association across Victoria. While other local associations, cut off their numbers at just four teams, we aim
to provide opportunity for our local youth, with us fielding as many as 9 teams in some age groups.
Recently our Big V teams had their initial trials. Our Men, led by new coach Trevor Lee look like they are
coming together nicely. Trevor is a great addition to our club and will be aiming to get our Senior Men back into
the state finals. Our Senior Women have had some great results of late including two state championships and
will be led by Matt Holland for the 2014 season. Matt has been our Youth Women’s coach for the last 2 years
and takes over from Jai Cesari who has had to step down due to family and additional basketball commitments.
Our 22 and Under Youth State Championship teams will be led by myself (Youth Men) and Matt Hughes (Youth
Women). 40 young men came out to trial for the Youth Men, a great sign in these early stages as we look to
bring that team back up the ladder. Our Youth Women will hope to continue the great foundation created by
Matt Holland. Having made finals for 2013, Matt Hughes will have a return to the playoffs in his sights.
Our Aussie Hoops and Kinder Club number continue to wow us. Almost 300 children aged 3-8 participate in
weekly basketball programs led by Amy Cook and Ashleigh Riddell. Their teams of (many) coaches have
developed a great reputation within the local community.
Come and say hello to our people at this weekend’s Eltham Festival. We will have a basketball ring setup and
several of our people around showing what we provide.

WORKING WITH CHILDREN CHECKS.
If you are coaching this season and are 18 years or over can you please provide Sue Cross with a copy of your
WWC. If you do not have one you can apply for one at the Post Office free of charge. These must be
completed or you will not be able to coach. Member Protection Declarations are also required to be signed
and are available in the office.
THANK YOU TO THOSE WHO HAVE STEPPED INTO HELP COACHING TEAMS.
Darren Black 10(28) one of our previous coaches. David Enticott 12 (30) a new team. Peter Bishop has been
dedicated enough to take on two teams. 12(26) & 14(26) as well as his duties as a doctor. Cassie Stockton, one
of our accomplished Women’s basketballers is helping again with 8(16). Luke Murphy has taken on 10(210.
Terry & Tom O’connor volunteered for 12(20). Amber Smith, already coaching 12(23) has also accepted guiding
14(27). Danielle Oaten has taken on 12(25). Nick Basett-Smith, an Under 16 player, is now coaching 12(28).
Will Crompton has filled a big gap by agreeing to coach 14(2). David De Angelis is coaching for the first time
14(16). Brie Mountford is helping again with Taylor Amiguet for 14(21). Lucy Atacador has kindly agreed to
come from a distance to coach 16(19). Wayne Minto whose son has just started has accepted coach of 16(20)
position. Thanks to Fab, David Whichello, Tom Napolitano and others for filling in at trainings and games.
While permanent coaches were found. Three Summers ago we had about 114 Saturday boys’ teams, now we
have 144. No wonder this over 25% increase stretched our resources. Coaches new or continuing, your or adult
Under 8’s or Under 18’s are welcome to contact Gai Smith 0420 280 958 to discuss coaching issues and/or see if
Gai can come along to your training to assist you.

HOLIDAY CAMP REVIEW
WELL DONE TO ALL THE CAMPERS!
Over the September School Holiday, the Eltham Basketball Club ran 7 camps over the two weeks.
The Camps were participated by basketball players with a whole range of abilities ranging from beginners to
championship players. The Camps were attended by over 280 kids over the 2 weeks.
It was great to see players out there having a go and also developing their skills getting ready for the Summer Season.
A massive THANKYOU goes out to Hayley Munro, Damon Lowery, Amy Cook and Ash Riddell who were the Head
Coach for our camps.
Kids gained valuable experience from a well-respected and talented Eltham coaches.
Thank you for everyone who participated and to all our coaches.
Holiday Camps will be back in the April School Holidays so look out for more information early next year.

A GUIDE TO ASSIST NEW FAMILIES
TRAINING
1. Trainings are important – please make sure team members attend trainings
2. If there are good reasons for non-attendance please phone the coach ahead of time so the coach knows for how many
players to plan training
3. Where there is a young coach, parents are expected to roster a supervisor at training to ensure safety and good
conduct. Even with senior coaches a parent in attendance helps in the case of accidents
4. Collect children on time at the conclusion of practices. The coach often has other commitments and cannot be
responsible for the safety of players after training
GAMES
1. Again regular attendance, punctuality and advance information of absence are important
2. The Club wishes parents to be a positive influence, giving encouragement to players and the coach and setting high
standards in attitude toward officials. The Club will not protect spectators who are penalised/evicted for poor conduct.
Spectators can be reported for misconduct. Keep young spectators under supervision – it is dangerous for them to be
running around the court.
3. Please learn to score/keep time. Instructions are on the website, or sit next to an experienced person
4. No drinks/spray on court. Keep the court clean. No smoking inside the venues
5. Please bring exact change, $7.00 to all games to give your team manager. Change is not available
6. Learn the key rules – for instance, the three or five second count recommences each time a shot it taken: also see
below. Also, see our website for a list of key rules.
7. No vilification of any participant, racial or otherwise is tolerated in this Club
KEEP INFORMED
1. Read EDJBA noticeboards for the match results and other news on North wall of the Eltham Leisure Centre and the
East wall at Eltham High School.
2. Make sure your team gets a copy of the Prowl. Watch for the next date off issue, and read your own
3. Contact the Grade Convenors if problems arise in your team. All organisation is through the Grade Convenors and
overall Boys and Girls Convenor, NOT the Club office
4. Read the Eltham Wildcats Club website www.elthamwildcats.basketball.net.au for important information
5. Read the EDJBA website www.edjba.basketball.net.au for all of your Results and Ladders
6. Game time inquiries need to go through your Team Manager, NOT the Club Office
SATURDAY COMPETITION IMPORTANT RULES
 Players names can be added to the scoresheet until half time, or if they are at the game & left off in error
 Once a player is on the scoresheet that player can arrive at ANY time during the game
 Clock stops in the last 2 minutes for all whistles in the second half
 Two points for incorrect uniform operations from the First Game. This applies even in grading.
 Pockets are not allowed on playing shorts. No jewellery is permitted
 Players cannot play twice in the one age group on the day
 There is a full copy of the EDJBA rules at each venue
 The major rules are at the foot of the venue list of addresses. Carry this around with you at games
Please note that in the early rounds there is a lot of experimental grading. Teams may win by a lot or lose by a lot. Don’t
worry. In most cases matters sort out. But if by Round 5 you think a team is still over graded or under graded please let
Joyce Hickling, Andrew Harris or your Grade Convenor know urgently no later than Round 5. If there is anything unusual
that affects results in round 1-5 please leave a message in the Office.
Remember contact is through your team manager and if necessary the Grade Convenor of the age group. The office does
not have all of the latest details. You maybe misinformed if you contact the office. It is important that if there is a problem
in a team for a member of your family, you address the matter politely and respectfully to the coach and or team manager
at a time that suits you. Enjoy the season, encourage, praise and help provide that extra which lifts the spirit of the team
DO NOT CONTACT THE OFFICE REGARDING TEAM ISSUES – CONTACT THE GRADE CONVENOR!

LIFE MEMBERSHIP
Kathy Maffei
Kathy has been involved in the club since Luke, her oldest son, started playing in the mid-nineties. She then
became involved with the Boys Championship Committee and became the major committee administrator.
This task is not only time-consuming but also at times emotionally draining, especially dealing with conduct
issues and also at time being blamed for selections for which she is not responsible and listening to parents
various complaints.
In addition Kathy has been a great promoter of All Abilities Basketball an also acted as the welcoming person to
visiting interstate groups at our tournament.
Thankyou Kathy for all your time, patience, and wisdom.
Greg Davis
Greg became involved in the Eltham Wildcats Basketball Club in the late 1980’s when his son Tony started
playing.
Greg contributed to the club as a Saturday coach and then as a Championship coach, Greg also refereed for a
number of years.
After Tony’s basketball career finished and also after Greg moved away from the area, he has continued his
commitment with a continuous record of championship coaching spanning about twenty years. In that time his
teams have won several premierships and he has had a record of having remarkably harmonious teams.
Greg’s 16-5 teams winning performance this season is a well-timed example of Greg’s work as Coach.

SATURDAY DOMESTIC NEWS
SATURDAY GIRLS
We are 3 rounds down in the Summer 2013/14 competition. This season, we have 79 girls team (which is a record number!) - 10 x U8,
15 x U10, 20 x U12, 14 x U14, 12 x U16, 5 x U18 and 3 x U20. Combined with the 30 x U12 boys' teams, we have combined FIFTY
U12 teams playing for Eltham this summer!
Grading
We are 3 weeks into grading (which will continue on until Round 6, after which your teams will be in their grades for the rest of the
season). Please be patient during grading - your team may have significant losses, and may have significant wins (not so hard to take!).
Over the 6 weeks of grading, those extremes are hopefully ironed out so that your team ends up in a grade that is suitable for them.
Coaches' clinic - Thursday November 14th
There is a coaches' clinic being held on Thursday November 14th at 6.30 pm at Balwyn High School - the clinic is being conducted by
Guy Molloy, coach of the Melbourne Boomers. Entitled “Drills and Skills for Junior Teams”, this would be a thoroughly worthwhile
clinic to attend. If you are interested, please email [email protected] with your name and your club.
The team folder in the Wildcats office
Each team has a folder in the filing cabinets in the Wildcats office at the Eltham High courts. Could team managers please check this
folder every week or two. The newsletter, The Prowl, gets placed into these folders, as long as other communications from the Club
(holiday camps, clinics, re-enrolment information, end of season medals etc).
Fill-in players
If your team is short of players for a particular week's games, please contact the Wildcats office. They will want to know how many
players you have, team number, age group, and grade and will look for fill-ins for you. The admin staff at the office know which
players are eligible to fill in for a team. If you know someone who can fill in, please check with the office (or with me) that they are
eligible. If you play an ineligible player and win the game, you will forfeit that game.
As a rule of thumb, players from an age group down and no more than a grade above yours are eligible (ie an U12 D grade team can
use U10 players from the C or D grade, but not A or B grade; an U18 C grade team can use players from the U16 B grade or below).
Cheers,
Carolyn Pickburn
Girls Domestic Coordinator

SATURDAY GIRLS GRAND FINALS
E1 vs BT1.
Wins were 1 apiece during the season when these 2 teams met in the Grand
Final. The game started at a frenetic pace with neither team able to gain any
ascendency and at half time scores were level. It was only in the last 5 minutes of
the second half that Bulleen managed to take a 6 point lead. But the E1 girls never
gave up and we tied the scores up with about 1 minute to go. Unfortunately we
were in foul trouble, which allowed Bulleen to go the line with just 14 seconds left
in the game. First shot missed but they made the second, giving them an invaluable
1 point lead.
Intense pressure from Bulleen nearly allowed them to steal the ball, however we
pressed forward with the clocking ticking down. A great pass from Claire (Matho) Matheson found Electra McCormack
unguarded just outside the 3 point line - she took the shot and although it missed, the ball found the safe hands of Mollie
Rose Marchbank who nailed the layup with 1 second remaining on the clock. What a fantastic game which saw us secure
our consecutive A grade grand final. Great effort by the entire team: Maddy Emery, Rhiarn Daley, Maddison Collins,
Kelly Morpurgo, Claire Matheson, Mollie Rose Marchbank, Electra McCormack, Kirsten Alderton, Meggan BarratMcCurrach. Coach Bob Morpurgo.

SATURDAY BOYS
James Macdonald 8-9 shows persistence, class and is a great team player. Jesse Todd is another promising young player
in this team.
In 10-9 Yiotis Christodolou works very hard, Alexander Fekonja plays intelligently and James White handles the ball well.
10-14 Mentions are Reuben Barr-Kemp (team Play) Jye Lupton (persistence) & Tarn Poulsen (Strong Player) Oliver
Dodgson and Lachlan Yeats received special mentions in 10-15. Our observer also remarked on their “textbook of
unselfish passing”.
Ben Lehmann in 10-20 showed great shills as did Byron Duff in 10-22. Angus Hughes was noted for special
determination. In 10-23 Lachie Watson is a promising tall player.
Other players to have special mentions were Bryce Munro 9persistence) Jarrod Spencer (skills) Emmett Wise
(determination) Kallen Walsh (team play) Cameron Pober (athletic with high work rate and great defence). Jack Dowell
(one percenters), Tiarnan Plant (athletic tall player) Josh Rudden (works hard in defence), Andrew White (tall and
athletic) Ethan Wright (effort), Adam Heiberg (great passing) Braedan Morse (overall) Jordan Clark (promising tall with
mobility) Kai Porter (Player of the Week Round 3 – Steals & runs).
Jacob Holmes (courage and efforts) Chris O’Brien (athletic) Amber Smith’s 12-23 is a classy team with heaps of hard
workers and some fine teamwork.
Great comeback: 14-14 trailed in Round2 11-22 with seven minutes to go and won 24-22. Another super come back
round 3 Tegan Mangers 8-8 team was down 2-8 and won 20-16. Welcome new team 12-30 James Enticott, Shae Fielding,
Brody Hall, Jacob Malone, Al Butterfield, Campbell McKinnon & Jake Phillips.
CHAMPIONSHIP BOYS NEWS
Welcome to new players and welcome back to previous ones. We will list new players when all teams are established.
The following are some important points about Championship games in the VJBL.
 In Grading Phase One all games are played in ten minute quarters with clock
stopping for all time outs, the last one minute of second quarter for all whistles
and the last three minutes of the fourth quarter for all whistles.
 Coaches’ name MUST BE ON SCORESHEET.
 Club gear ONLY must be worn on the bench and in warm-ups.
 Cost of games differs from venue to venue. Spectators do pay but can obtain a
pass if they go to two venues. Players must pay where they play even if they have
attended a game beforehand.
 Social media policy is very strict. Any adverse comments on any participant –
Player, coach, referee, official or other team or club will be result in severe sanctions.
ELTHAM-DANDENONG TOURNAMENT.
It is expected all Championship teams will be entered, but each player needs to fill out an
individual entry form. These forms will be available soon on our web site, in the foyer and in
