A Letter From Our Chairman & President
Mission
Statement
Forty five years ago, our organization began its all important mission
to provide opportunities for our athletes through sports programming
and to change society’s attitude and gain acceptance for persons with
intellectual disabilities. Fast forward to 2013 and Special Olympics has
become the leading influence in communities across Connecticut that
has accomplished a great deal – thanks to an ever growing brigade of
immensely loyal, caring and talented athletes and supporters.
We have much to celebrate as
we look back, because of all the
individuals who, in some way, have
been instrumental in advancing the
Special Olympics movement here in
Connecticut since its inception in 1968.
Just during the past year, we have
recognized numerous volunteers
whose dedication to Special Olympics
Connecticut spans decades, welcomed
newcomers of all ages to the movement,
implemented impactful organizational changes and provided new
opportunities that reflect our mission.
The mission of Special Olympics is to provide year-round sports
training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type
sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities; giving
them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness,
demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing
of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special
Olympics athletes and the community.
During our Local Coordinators Summit – a gathering of volunteers who
run Special Olympics programs in their communities – we recognized
members who’ve served in their role for 25, 30 or even 40 years!
Collectively, this group of extraordinary volunteers has given 485
years of personal service to our cause which
indicates the level of passion that has been
sustained after so many years!
We refreshed our brand and updated the look
of our uniforms. We brought our staff together
to one “home base” to become more unified
and efficient – so we can provide the best
service possible to all of our organization’s
constituents. We introduced our first Unified
SOCT Volunteer Nancy Hemingway of Pratt and Whitney was honored with a President’s
Award during the Yale vs. Harvard Women’s Basketball Game. She is pictured here with SOCT
Board Chair John Riccardi and SOCT President Beau Doherty.
Sports® Fitness Club, where the emphasis will be on both individual and
group exercise to improve overall well-being. And, we were delighted in
seeing the Special Olympics Unified Sports® program featured on one of
the covers of the Hartford Courant Sunday edition, a first of its kind!
Each year, as in 2013, we continue to make significant progress in our
mission – but we are far from the finish line. We look forward to working
with you to empower more athletes and partners to be brave in all their
attempts, and to ensure respect and opportunity for individuals of all
abilities so that they are fully accepted in our communities.

Unified Sports® School-Based Program
The Special Olympics Connecticut Unified Sports® Program
The Pathway…Pre-K through Grade 12 and Beyond
The Special Olympics Unified Sports program brings
athletes with and without intellectual disabilities
together to play sports, gain physical fitness and
develop friendships. Special Olympics Unified
Sports® is a program that is offered in communities
across the state for individuals of all ages. It is also
offered in schools to provide every student the
opportunity to experience and excel at athletics.
Special Olympics and the Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference team up to bring the Unified
Sports® program to students, at every grade level, in over 170 schools across the state. Through this
longstanding partnership, students have an opportunity to embark on “The Unified Sports® Pathway”
to experience sports that bring together individuals with intellectual disabilities (Athletes) and those
without intellectual disabilities (Unified Partners) on the same team. While students may begin their
involvement with Unified Sports® at school, it is an activity that they can continue participating in
throughout their lifetime.

Connecticut is world renowned for its impactful
Special Olympics Unified Sports® program in
schools statewide. Twenty-three years ago in
Connecticut, the first partnership between a Special
Olympics state program and an interscholastic
sports organization in the country was established.
Through this partnership, the Special Olympics
Unified Sports® program was developed and
introduced in Connecticut schools to provide
athletes with and without intellectual disabilities
opportunities to play sports together. The initiative
began with eight high school basketball teams
becoming involved. Today, more than 170 schools
across Connecticut offer Special Olympics Unified
Sports® to students at all levels to provide inclusive
sports training and competition to athletes of
all abilities, positively impact school climate and
encourage acceptance and respect for all, on and
off the playing field. There are presently 21 states
working to emulate this partnership that has
existed in Connecticut for over two decades.
The Special Olympics Connecticut/CIAC schoolbased Unified Sports® program was featured
in the Hartford Courant Sunday edition in June
of 2013, in recognition of its influence on the
National High School Sports Federation, Special
Olympics International and Project Unify, a grant
that provides funding to broaden the reach of the
Unified Sports® program.
Young AthletesTM
Students in pre-school through Grade 2 participate in
the Young Athletes Program, which complements the
gross motor skills taught in Connecticut’s public and
private primary grade schools. A kit of activity supplies,
assistance and support, a curriculum guide with DVD
and end-of-year culminating event are provided.
Elementary School
At this level, students participate in sports activities
that focus on skill and gross motor development.
Athletes and partners participate in basketball,
soccer, volleyball and track & field events with their
peers from around the state. Schools are encouraged
to organize several practice sessions locally and then
come together for regional Unified Sports® events.
Practices and regional events provide a forum for
sustained socialization among players and enhance
the individual’s sports skills.
Middle School
At this point, participants begin to transition from focusing
on individual sports skills and gross motor development
to engaging in team-based competition, as they continue
to build meaningful interpersonal relationships. Athletes
and partners participate in intra-squad scrimmages,
interscholastic meets and Connecticut Interscholastic
Athletic Conference tournaments. Sports include soccer,
basketball, bowling, volleyball and track & field.
High School
As students continue in the Program, they play as
teammates. They engage in positive social interaction
between students with and without intellectual
disabilities, build new friends with different abilities
on and off the playing field, gain confidence, and
demonstrate positive changes in attitudes, behavior and
performance. Their example even helps to inspire others,
creating a more inclusive school climate.
UNIFIED ART
This program provides collaborative
opportunities in the visual arts for
school-aged children with and without
intellectual disabilities. Each child will
be given the opportunity to develop
artistically, experience joy, and participate
in the sharing of their gifts as they develop
friendships with their peers and showcase
their work in community settings.

The Special Olympics Healthy Athletes® program
is dedicated to providing free health services
and education to Special Olympics athletes, and
changing the way health systems interact with
people with intellectual disabilities.
Special Olympics Connecticut offers the Healthy
Athletes program throughout Summer Games
weekend to provide free health screenings in
a fun, welcoming environment that removes
athletes’ anxiety about visits with a doctor or
dentist, and offers access to healthcare athletes
might not receive otherwise. Not only does this
program benefit the athletes, it also helps train
healthcare professionals who gain knowledge
of and compassion for people with intellectual
disabilities.

The Law Enforcement Torch Run
The mission of the Law
Enforcement Torch Run® (LETR)
for Special Olympics is to increase
awareness and raise funds for
the Special Olympics movement
globally.
In Connecticut, the Torch Run is an actual three-day running
event where officers and athletes carry the Special Olympics
“Flame of Hope” through more than 100 cities and towns
to the site of Opening Ceremonies for the Special Olympics
Connecticut Summer Games. The Torch Run also encompasses
a variety of fundraising initiatives, such as Tip-A-Cop, Cop-onTop and other fundraising events.
More than 1,500 officers participate in the Law Enforcement
Torch Run in Connecticut annually. They represent local, state,
and federal departments, agencies and correctional facilities. In
2013, these officers collectively raised over $520,000 to support
Special Olympics Connecticut.

Over The Edge
Over the Edge events give brave souls with big hearts the
chance to rappel down the side of a prominent Connecticut
building to support inspiring athletes of all abilities.
Fearless friends of Special Olympics Connecticut scaled tall buildings

conditions; fitness and health screenings can be life-saving. Special Olympics
athletes are also employed at five times the rate of other people with intellectual
disabilities. Special Olympics is about revealing the champion in all of us.

The annual Hall of Fame event honors extraordinary athletes,
volunteers and supporters who demonstrate leadership, spirit
and selflessness, inspire joy through sport and promote inclusion
and respect for individuals of all abilities.
Securing the Future of Special Olympics Connecticut
Champion’s Society members are the guardians who protect our athletes’ future by providing
for Special Olympics in their will or estate plan. By becoming a Champion’s Society member and
leaving a legacy, you’ll help ensure that Special Olympics’ life-changing mission will endure for
generations to come.
Becoming a Member
There are no membership fees or minimum gift amounts to join. The size of your gift will be
kept confidential. If you have already named Special Olympics in a bequest or other planned gift,
please let us know. Your willingness to be recognized as a member of the Champion’s Society will
encourage others to follow your example. It will also demonstrate your commitment to providing
transformative opportunities for future Special Olympics athletes.
