MINI - JUNIOR AND TEENS BASKETBALL ROSTERS 2011
Dear Parents and Players
We invite your child (ren) to play Basketball once again with the YMCA this year. Junior and Teen
rosters will be commencing 11th of March, 2011. Mini Basketball games will commence after Easter.
If your child (ren) would like to play, please return the enclosed slip by Friday 25th February 2011.
All children will be kept together, where possible, i.e. with the same team members as last year.
The sportsmanship shown from parents and players conduct on and off the court was terrific. The
atmosphere was pleasant. We thank you all for your continued support with the YMCA’s policy on
Sport!
As you may not be aware … our policy is to give the opportunity to every person that wishes to play
Basketball; it does not matter what their abilities are. The YMCA’s policy is to give every person a
‘fair go’. Please remember the YMCA is here to teach all children the game in a non-pressured
environment for their enjoyment, to bring out their abilities to their best performance, allowing each
child to develop in all areas of development in a natural progression. If Sport has too many
pressures placed upon children, they will cease playing sport at an older age where they should be
still playing … due to it not being ‘fun’ any longer!
Our Adult Social Rosters are very popular and many young adults have returned to play sport with
the ‘Y’. Last year we had an increase in the number of teams resulting in capping the number of
teams playing due to the amount of byes, therefore new teams were placed onto waiting lists. During
2010 quite a number of members were playing two rosters throughout the week. Together we can
endeavour to keep the ‘Y’ an enjoyable fun place to play sport!
Mini Basketball (for 7 & 8 years):
This is a great start to playing basketball. Training commences as from Thursday 10th February 2011
(3.30 – 4.15pm). Throughout the first part of Term One we simply start off with our ball drills and
skills. Usually after Easter we will have enough interested children and therefore they are then
placed into mixed teams and their session time is increased to one hour session. They practice for ½
an hour and then play 2 x 15 minute halves i.e. game of Basketball. We play Mini Basketball with
modified rules for the younger child. Training sessions are fun, good for co-ordination and self
confidence. We like to take the boredom out of ‘basketball drills’. Children train with their team and
then play a rostered game. Therefore, parents only need to attend once a week for one hour session.
A roster is given out so parents will know what time they are due to turn up on Thursdays i.e. 3.30pm
or at 4.30pm. Parents may wish to purchase a YMCA Basketball singlet top, but this is not
compulsory. We always try to keep costs to a minimum for families. Session cost is $5.00 per child
for the first part of the term and once games are introduced session cost is $7.00 per child.
Junior Basketball ( for 9, 10, 11 & 12 years):
From Mini Basketball we take you to the next stage in participating in YMCA Basketball. You attend
training which recommences as from Monday 7th February 2011 (3.30 – 4.15pm or 4.15 – 5.00pm)
and once teams have been collated, you will play your game on Friday afternoons. Roster games
will commence approximately Friday 11th March 2011. Game times are usually from 3.45pm to no
later than 8.30pm. Training is more complex as you start to learn more than just the basics!
As children progress in Junior Basketball they will learn about team play and how team work
improves your game. Even though training is not compulsory, we would like to see children turn up
as this is an important part of learning to be part of your team. Training sessions are still a lot of fun
and great exercise to get you fitter! YMCA Staff will endeavour to coach your team on game night to
help you understand and learn more about the game! Parents are asked to assist with subbing and
coaching on game nights too. All players are given equal playing time on the court. Players are
treated fairly, the emphasis is not about the win or lost it’s about how you conduct yourself on the
court and how you are part of the team!

Sportsmanship is our main priority! Players are expected to be in correct uniform. YMCA Basketball
singlets are to be purchased (price to be advised) and sport shorts are to be worn. Games consist of
1x20 minute and 1x15 minute halves and cost $5.00 per player. Training sessions on Monday are
$5.00 per person.
Teens Social Basketball (for 13 & 14years):
Training recommences as from Monday 7th February 2011 (4.15 – 5.00pm). Roster will commence
Friday 11th March 2011. YMCA Staff will teach you further skills on Monday to improve your game
on Fridays. Game times on Friday are usually at the later times but can be from 3.45 – 8.30pm.
Teams are given the opportunity to look after themselves by subbing one another on and off the court
and generally being responsible for themselves with a helpful eye by YMCA Staff. We want the
teenager to play with no pressure so they can simply enjoy their game of sport. The emphasis still
remains on sportsmanship and participation; however we would like to see the ‘social’ side mean
more whilst you are here! Players can make up their own sides by simply liaison with YMCA Staff.
Teams are expected to be in correct uniform and must wear the same coloured singlet top.
If you would like to play again, please return the enclosed slip by Friday 25th February, 2011.
We look forward to welcoming you back again to the ‘Y’ soon!

PS: Many comments are often made in regards to Junior Basketball at the YMCA and you may have
heard some of these; but we would like to remind you about YMCA Basketball! Listed below is what
we are trying to achieve at the YMCA.

Teach children sportsmanship
Never allow anyone to abuse anyone else (follow the behaviour codes of sport conduct)
Equal playing time is given to all players each game
Players are taught how to accept a loss and a win
Players are taught respect for themselves and their fellow team mates and opponents
All Mini and Junior Basketball Teams are coached by YMCA Staff where possible
We play modified rules to suit the abilities of children’s developmental stages
Children are to be in a non-pressured environment and enjoy Sport
If you feel you have the qualities to be an umpire for either Basketball or Netball and would like to either learn or
you are capable of umpiring, please let us know. As you all realized, we can all umpire from the sidelines, but
these wonderful people are hard to find … What about YOU, YES YOU… consider the idea … to give it a go!
