Considering Certification
Let’s Take a Closer Look …
1. Certification vs. Certificate
2. Value of Certification
Certification vs. Certificate
Both are valuable, it depends on what you want
Certification
Certification measures experience, knowledge and skill
against a set of criteria and the assessment is carried
out by a neutral, third party organization. Experience is
required and is often the entry point.
Certificate
A certificate is usually obtained as a result of taking a
course and possibly, passing an exam. Experience is
not required, and in some cases is the first step for
entering a new profession.
Standards of Practice
Value of Certification
To the Individual
▪ Enhanced credibility
▪ Personal satisfaction
▪ Peer and professional recognition
To the Employer
▪ Independent verification of knowledge
and competency
▪ Increased productivity/efficiency
▪ Higher quality of work
Knapp & Associates, 2007.
Value of Certification
To the Profession

standard of practice and code of
conduct for that industry
• Creates a common understanding
and language
