Golf originated from a game
played on the eastern coast
of Scotland in the Kingdom
of Fife.
The game was
played on
natural
courses,
consisting of
sand dunes
and rabbit
runs.
But, there
was no
hole.
King Charles I introduced the game to England, while
Mary, queen of Scots, introduced it to France.
‘Caddie…
..came from Queen
Mary’s cadets that
would help her golf.

Before wood

golf clubs

Later, thinner clubs
and leather balls
began to be used.
The first golf
courses
consisted of
12 units, or
holes.
Herds of grazing sheep were often these course’s green
keepers.
Golf courses have since grown from 12 to 18 holes.
Golf was first
internationally
played in 1682 in
Leith near Edinburgh.
The first ever golf organization was
The Gentlemen Golfers of Leith,
formed in 1744.
This organization promoted an annual
competition.
The
competition
featured a
silver golf club
as the prize.
The rules were
drafted by
Duncan Forbes.
The rules now are
the same as the
rules were in the
Articles and Code of
Playing Golf in
1754.
Golf depends
on a code of
honor.

…the
meaning of
golf..
If money titles meant anything, I'd play more
tournaments. The only thing that means a lot
to me is winning. If I have more wins than
anybody else and win more majors than
anybody else in the same year, then it's been
a good year. Tiger Woods
