News about Texas Lottery® winners, scratch-off prizes, new games and more!
Fiscal Year 2010 (which ended on August 31, 2010) was another
“winning” year for the Texas Lottery, its players, Texas education and
other state programs! This year the Texas Lottery contributed nearly
$1.095 billion to the state of Texas,
the highest total of transfers
to the state since FY 1998.
Total sales were the fourth
highest ever at $3.74
billion.

year. Prizes of $1 million
or more were awarded to 44
lucky Texas Lottery players. In all, players received almost $2.3
billion in prizes this year.

for Texas Lottery®
players!
Of the $1.095 billion in transfers to the state, slightly more than $1
billion went directly to the Foundation School Fund, which supports
public education in Texas. An additional $7.3 million went to the Texas
Veterans Commission from the sales of a new instant scratch-off game
dedicated to veterans’ assistance, and other state programs benefitted
from almost $87 million in unclaimed lottery prizes.

Store clerks will say that some lottery players are superstitious, refusing to
buy the last ticket on a roll. Raymond D Bigham of Rio Vista, is not such
a person. In October, he stopped at the store where he frequently buys Texas
Lottery tickets—Boney Joe’s, located at 100 South Highway 174 in Rio Vista.
He bought the last $500,000,000 Blockbuster on the ticket roll, and it brought
him a $2.5 million prize!
“The store clerk tried to sell me that last ticket,
but I bought something else and wound up
winning some money,” Bigham said. “I told
him I’d get that last Blockbuster ticket off his
hands. After I saw the prize and even after he
ran it through the terminal, I didn’t believe I
had this prize.”
Besides playing scratch-offs, Bigham
enjoys Daily 4 TM, which recently
brought him a prize of $2,400. He
gave that prize to his parents to
use as a down payment for a
piece of property close to his
home. Bigham planned to use
his prize money to pay off
that property, pay his debts
and save most of the rest.
“My ‘blow-it’ money will go
to buying a Harley-Davidson
motorcycle,” he said.
He’s been playing Texas Lottery games since day one, but one summer day was
a little different for Jon Angell of Hondo. He stopped at the Noor Pantry, 8005
Bandera Road in San Antonio, on August 16 and purchased some tickets, as he
often does. But this was no ordinary Monday morning purchase. Outside the
store, he scratched off an Instant Powerball® ticket that
revealed a top prize worth $100,000.
“I was dumbfounded when I saw this. I stared at
the ticket for about five minutes,” said Angell.
Finally, Angell went back in the store and used
their Check-a-Ticket terminal to be sure he’d really
won. After sharing his excitement with the store
clerk, he went to the Texas Lottery claim
center in San Antonio to claim his prize.
Angell wasted no time making
plans for his prize money. He’ll put
part of the money in savings
and use the rest to fix up
some land he and his wife
purchased.
Angell said he’ll continue buying his favorite
tickets. “Now I have even more
incentive to play.”
