Evidence collecting for the Sainsbury’s School Games Kitemark
The following document can support your school to understand what is required should it be identified for the Sainsbury’s School
Games Kitemark external validation process. This document can also support School Games Organisers as part of the SGO verification process for silver and
gold level schools. It is not an exhaustive or definitive list, but can be used as a guide.
Only include pupils in years 3 – 13 in your calculations.
Criteria – Pre-requisites
School Games website registration
Held a Sainsbury’s School Games Day as a
culmination of a year round competition
programme
Possible evidence
Automatic as all schools who apply for the Kitemark must be registered
Level 1 of the Sainsbury's School Games builds on a school’s existing work to offer pupils a year-round
programme of regular intra-school competition in a number of sports that culminate in a Sainsbury's
School Games Day: the ultimate school sports day.
Schools are not allowed to count their annual sports day as a School Games Day unless the day has
been formatted to develop the 3 key themes of a School Games Day, which are culture, celebration
and inclusion.
A calendar of competition that demonstrates
opportunities for young people with SEND to
take part in competitions
A notice board promoting Sainsbury’s School
Games activity
A system in place to track young people’s
participation in the Sainsbury’s School Games
Examples of Level 1 School Games Days and case studies from the pilot areas (5.3MB)
An annual or termly calendar that shows the sports competitions that your school is running. This can
be in paper format or online, via outlook etc
Young people with SEND can be:
• Unable to play the running game
• Recognised as having a special educational need
• Cannot play the mainstream game
• Will benefit from playing inclusive formats
• Have not represented their school at level 2
• Have a specific type of impairment
A formal branded Sainsbury’s School Games notice board, NOT a notice board for the promotion of PE
A paper based or automated system that allows your school to track pupils participation in the School
Games. This does not need to be hi-tech, but needs to be able to support schools to create strategies
to increase participation
Opportunities which attract less active young
people to participate in physical activity
Provided at least two hours physical education
during curriculum time each week for all pupils
Criteria – bronze, silver and gold
Provide the appropriate number of Sainsbury’s
School Games competition formats
Engaging students in leading, managing and
officiating in the Sainsbury’s School Games
Offer opportunities that enable pupils to
participate in extra-curricular sporting activity
Knowledge of or copy of school policy to support this area
List of opportunities available to less active young people (eg Change4Life clubs)
All school timetables are different; however, to achieve the pre-requisite, schools should be offering
all young people the opportunity to take part in 2 hours of PE per week. This should be evidenced by 2
hours on the timetable (for all pupils in years 3-11) and only be part of the curriculum. It cannot be
made up of additional non-curriculum activity. It cannot include any extracurricular activity before
school at lunchtime or after school. This criteria does not apply to years 1 and 2 and 12 and 13.
Evidence
 Calendar of competition and / or fixture lists
 Appropriate levels of engagement for young people within the school demonstrated by
leadership academy programme of activity, leadership pathway documentation.
 Registers of young people within the school that have taken part in L, M or O
To calculate this, you first need to identify the following:
 the number of young people actively engaged as sports leaders in your school (yrs 3-13 only)
this academic year;
 the number of young people in your school this academic year (yrs 3-13 only)
To get your percentage figure, you need to first take the number of young leaders engaged in your
school and divide this figure by the total number of young people in your school in years 3-13 this
year. Then multiply this figure by 100.
E.g. If you have 50 young leaders engaged in your school and 500 young people in your school in years
3-13, your calculation will be:
50 (young leaders) / by 500 (pupils in years 3-13 this academic year) x 100 = 10.
 Registers of young people take part
 Extra-curricular programme of activity
 Promotional material regarding activity
To calculate this, you first need to identify the following:
 the average number of extra-curricular competition and participation sessions delivered in
an average week (for yrs 3-13 only)
 the average number of spaces available (i.e. the number of young people who can participate)
per session in an average week (for yrs 3-13 only)
 the total number of young people in your school in years 3-13 this academic year.
To get your percentage figure, you need to first take the number of extra-curricular and participation
sessions delivered in an average week and multiply this by the average number of spaces available.
As this provides a weekly figure, to calculate a figure for a month you then need to multiply this by
4. Finally, divide this figure by the total number of young people in your school in years 3-13 this
academic year, and then multiply this by 100 to give you your percentage.
E.g. If you have 4 sessions running per week, with an average of 10 spaces available and 500 pupils on
your school roll your calculation will be:
4 (sessions per week) x 10 (spaces available) = 40
40 x 4 (weeks in a month) = 160 opportunities per month
160 / 500 (pupils in years 3-13 this academic year) x 100 = 32%.
