June 11, 2017 Most Holy Trinity Sunday Mission Statement With the Eucharist as our source, Mary as our patroness and the Holy Spirit as our guide, we the Roman Catholic Parish of Immaculate Conception and Assumption of Our Lady, Tuckahoe, seek to give meaning to our faith by following Christ’s command to care for His people, by fostering actions that nourish both the spiritual and social needs of our people and build community within and without our parish. For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him might not perish but might have eternal life. John 3:16 From the Desk of Fr. Connolly June 11, 2017 Corpus Christ Procession Join us in celebrating the Feast of Corpus Christi next Sunday for our Eucharistic Procession after the 12 Noon Mass at Immaculate Conception! Saint John Paul II reminds us, in commemorating Corpus Christi, or, “… the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ,” the Church does not only celebrate the Eucharist but solemnly bears it in procession, publicly proclaiming that the sacrifice of Christ is for the salvation of the whole world.” As a parish, let us honor together the Most Blessed Sacrament as we bear our Eucharistic Lord in procession following the 12 Noon Mass on Sunday, June 18. Following Mass, we will process out of the church and onto the grounds to bless the community of Tuckahoe. We will have three altars outside, decorated by three of our parish communities, where prayers and benediction will take place. We will then return to the church for a final benediction at the main altar. The Blessed Sacrament is God’s greatest gift to us because it is the gift of His very Self. See you next Sunday, June 18, at Immaculate Conception for our Eucharist Procession following the 12 Noon Mass! Trinity Sunday First Reading: Exodus 34:4b-6, 8-9 The Easter Season has ended and we return to the Old Testament for our first readings. In this reading, God announces Himself to Moses, who has brought two tablets to replace those that had been broken. In turn, Moses beseeched the Lord to remain in their company as the Jews seek the Promised Land. Moses also reminded the Lord that the Jews were a “stiff-necked people.” Moses asked God to, “… pardon our wickedness and sins, and receive us as your own.” Second Reading: 2 Corinthians 13:11-13 Our Old Testament reading acknowledged our sinfulness. This reading encourages us to mend our ways and live in harmony with one another. Gospel: John 3:16-18 The extent of God’s love is proclaimed in 3:16, “God so lived the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him might not perish but might have eternal life.” His purpose was our salvation, and we are saved by our faith. If you have questions about any aspect of our Catholic Church and Faith, just drop us a note or call and we will answer them to the best of our ability. We get our first taste of Ordinary Time after the Christmas season winds down. Ordinary Time is put on hold in the middle of the winter and into spring as we celebrate forty days of Lent and seven weeks of Easter. 93. What are the liturgical seasons of the year, and when does a new liturgical year begin? Easter season ends the day before we celebrate the descent of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost. We continue Ordinary Time (after two Sundays that celebrate the Holy Trinity & Corpus Christi), which will end the day before the first Sunday of Advent. A liturgical year is an annual cycle of communal prayer and celebration. The Roman Catholic Church divides its liturgical year into five distinct seasons: Advent, Christmas, Lent, Easter, and Ordinary Time. Our liturgical year starts on the first Sunday of Advent. Unlike the secular world, which likes to start the Christmas season in October, we Catholics begin our Christmas season with the evening celebrations on December 24. Christmas runs for more than twelve days, through the feast of the Epiphany to the Baptism of the Lord, Each liturgical season has distinct flavors and traditions, but they come together in harmony to help us reflect on the one mystery at the heart of every liturgy, no matter the season: the saving mystery of Christ’s life, death and resurrection. Sr. Cora has a new job! On Friday, May 26 after some time and bringing our CCD year to a successful and fruitful conclusion, Miss Katy Feeney resigned as Director of Religious Education (DRE) for financial reasons. These past two years as DRE have seen some wonderful and innovative initiatives in our program and we certainly are grateful to Katy for her tireless work with the children, both in the school and in our Churches. th I have asked Sr. Cora Lombardo, ASCJ, currently the Director of Adult Faith Formation, to leave that position and become the DRE beginning in the Fall semester 2017. We wish Sr. Cora a blessed tenure as the Director of Children’s Religious Life and Education. Because there is much preparation before the takeover of such a program, I know I can assure Sr. Cora of your help and support. Fr. Sorgie Sr. Cora Lombardo, ASCJ Second, I count on the Holy Spirit to move you to volunteer to serve in some role. We need Hall Monitors, Aides, Office Assistance and Catechists. Do it for the love of God! Do it as an act of gratitude to God for your many blessings! Just do it and know the joy of service! This is what it means to let the Holy Spirit move in us; not pretty words, but the real presence of God enabling us to do what we never thought we could do! So, pray and ask the Holy Spirit to lead you and guide you! I am an Apostles of the Sacred Heart of Jesus (ASCJ). My name is Sr. Cora, because of my love for the Heart of Jesus (Cor in Latin means heart). I’ve ministered as a Director of Religious Education (DRE) in a very large program at St. Vitus in New Castle, PA for seven years and as a DRE and Director of Confirmation for the Parishes of St. Paul, St. Lawrence and St. Louis in West Haven, CT for five years. I am a seasoned teacher from the little ones in pre-school to high school through adults. My last day in the office will be June 22. On June I thank Fr. Sorgie for this opportunity to minister in 26, I will have Knee Replacement Surgery. During our parish as the Director of Religious Education. I the month of July, I will be recovering in Hamden, feel strongly God's call to do this. This program will CT. I plan on returning to the parish in August. If you only work if we work together. This is what it means have any questions, call or e-mail me. to be family; this is what it means to be Church. I God bless you! count, first of all, on your prayers and your support. Sr. Cora -4- 422IC/A Parish Religious Education Program (PREP) Welcome to Family Friendly Catechesis! Family Friendly means that if you have two or three children, all of them would come to the Parish Religious Education Program (PREP) at the same time on the same day of the week. So, if you have children in Grades 2, 5 and 8, you can sign them all up for PREP for the 4:15-5:30 PM Session on Wednesdays or the Wednesday 6:45-8:00 PM Session. We offer the PREP to support you in your primary vocation as teachers of your children. Our goal is to allow you more time with your family by making Religious Education easier to schedule. What is Catechesis? It’s all about Jesus, who shows us the Father and reveals His love for us! Or, in the words of the Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC): "At the heart of catechesis we find the Person of Jesus of Nazareth, the only Son from the Father ... who suffered and died for us and who now, after rising, is living with us forever." How does this work? Catechists, will use a textbook to teach: • What did Jesus say and do? • What do we believe? • How do we encounter the Risen Lord Jesus in the Sacraments? • How do we pray? • How are we called to live? How can all eight grades be offered at the same time? All eight grades can only be offered if generous, parents and parishioners prayerfully consider the call of the Holy Spirit to volunteer in PREP as a Hall Monitor, as an Aide in the Classroom, as an Office Assistant, or as a Catechist. Perhaps, you might be interested in helping out as a substitute catechist. Most important of all, you can pray for all of us in PREP! Let’s Talk About Catechists! Questions you might ask yourself to now if you are qualified: • Do you have a loving heart for God, your family and your faith? • Do you want to be a role model for your children? • Are you willing to learn as you go? • Do you try to put your faith in your life by the choices you make? If you answered Yes to most of these, then you have what it takes to be a Catechist! It is not about perfection! All of us are a work in progress. It is a willingness to be prepared, to learn and to pray. What Does This Look Like? • You will have the same 10-14 children each week in a classroom. • You read stories, discuss ideas, share thoughts, and pray with the children, just as you do with your own at home. • Your Teacher’s Manual and student textbook will focus on one main message and give you plenty of activities and stories to communicate to the children. • It is a weekly commitment for 30 weeks with breaks for religious holy days and secular holidays. What is the Key for Success? Take the time to be prepared. Come up with a plan. Be yourself, using your gifts and talents to help the children understand God’s love for them. What is the Goal? Share God’s love with the children, so they can share it with others. According to the Catechism of the Catholic Church: The Catechist’s aim is to put "people … in communion … with Jesus Christ: only he can lead us to the love of the Father in the Spirit and make us share in the life of the Holy Trinity." • • • • What are the Requirements? Practice your faith. Be a Catholic in good standing. Teach what the Church teaches. Pray and prepare well, so that the children leave with a greater love of Jesus and God the Father. Parish Religious Education Program: Prep What Days and Times will PREP be Offered? It is our hope to be able to offer classes for Grades 1-8 on Wednesdays and one or two other days as necessary. The first step is to recruit catechists, then the days and times can be published. What if I Already Registered? No problem! Once we are able to publish the days and times, we will contact you to update your registration. Should I wait to register? No! Register as soon as possible, so we have sufficient time to purchase supplies and materials for September. What about First Graders and Third Graders? They will come for Religious Education classes at the same times as their sisters and brothers. They will not be home schooled. In a nutshell, this is the plan for Family Friendly Catechesis! -5- 422IC/A Stewardship for Sunday, June 4 Church ParishPay Total: Sunday Collection: $16,446 $2,925 $19,371 Black & Indian Missions Collection: Total: $2,055 Our Second $2,000 2017 Bonanza Lottery Winner is Gold Envelope Donations for Gym Debt and Extraordinary Maintenance: Church $940 ParishPay $88 Total: $1,028 Donn & Jean-Marie McMullen Stewardship for Sunday, May 28 We will continue to draw two tickets per week for $200 each from now through Thanksgiving.
