26 SUBJECT-VERB AGREEMENT
REVIEW
The subject (a noun or pronoun) of a complete sentence must agree
with the verb.
A singular subject takes a singular verb. A plural subject takes a plural
verb.
Review these.
Mr Blair works in a bank.
The children love ice cream.
Collective nouns take singular verbs.
Review these.
The choir is singing Christmas carols.
That group of boys is making too much noise.
Uncountable nouns take singular verbs.
Review these.
Water is scarce in some countries.
Bread is made from wheat flour.

Nouns with ‘each’ or ‘every’ in front of them take singular verbs.
Review these.
Each child receives a present.
Every school prefect wears a badge.
The verb is the same in the past tense for both singular and plural
subjects. The only exception is ‘was’ and ‘were’ in the past tense.
Review these.
He caught a bird.
They caught a bird.
He was injured in the accident.
They were injured in the accident.
