An Integers Game: Need – 50 flashcards, pen How to Play: 1. Write an integer on each flashcard from -20 to 20. 2. Divide the flashcards in half and give one pile to 3. 4. 5. 6. each player. Place the cards face down in front of each person on a table. To start, each player will pick up and flip over the top two cards so the number is showing and place it on the table. Each player should add the numbers on their two cards together. For example, if player 1 gets a 7 and a 3, the total would be 10. Compare the totals. The player whose total is greater keeps all 4 cards. Keep going until all the cards have been used. The player who has the highest number of cards is the winner. Tips: If you want a new challenge, replay the game using subtraction rather than addition. 2. You can also use a timer to encourage your child to finish in a certain amount of time. Decide on a small prize to give your child for getting all of the math problems correct. Teaching Kindness Reduces Bullying Instead of teaching children what NOT to do, teaching them what they CAN do is important to create change. Teaching and encouraging kindness is related to many of the following positive outcomes: Happy children! There is a natural good feeling that results when we do an act of kindness, even if it’s small. Happy and compassionate children do not have a need to bully others. Higher self-esteem. The “helper’s high” that comes from endorphins in our brains when we do something kind increases our sense of belonging. Children will feel like they can have a true impact on their environment. More friends. Feeling like they are accepted and liked by peers is usually very important to children of all ages. Kindness increases our connections with other people on a deeper level. Improved academic success. The feel good effects of being kind help increase children’s concentration and memory, which greatly impacts learning. Better mental health. Acts of kindness increase serotonin levels, the natural brain chemical that improves mood. Have a consistently unhappy child? Encourage them to look outside themselves and be kind to someone else. 1. Seize the days and eat well Like all great power couples, these healthy foods are even better together.
