PE and Sport Premium Summary 2016-17 Since the initial allocation of the Sport Premium funding (since 2013), Westgate Hill Primary School has received a total of £35,517. In the last academic year (2015-16), our allocation was £9,942 and we are due to receive £10,340 for the forthcoming academic year (2016-17). This is designed to help primary schools improve the quality of the PE and sport activities they offer their pupils. The Government has spent over £450 million on this funding over the 3 academic years from 2013 to 2016. During this academic year Westgate Hill Primary School will receive £10,340 from the PE and Sport Premium Grant. So far this year we have spent this money and are planning to continue spending on: Professional Development of Staff for the delivery of Physical Education; Buying in of high-quality coaching for after-school activities; Purchase of new PE resources. Professional Development of Staff for the delivery of Physical Education This PE Funding is providing Westgate Hill Primary School with the opportunity for teaching staff and teaching assistants, who are involved in the delivery of PE, to access in-class CPD by J. J. Coaching on Dance and Gymnastics. A specialist teacher, each week delivers lessons alongside class teachers, focusing upon areas in the teachers PE development, areas such as dance and gymnastics. This PE specialist works with the class teacher to guide the assessment of the children’s performance and discuss future lessons and skills progression. During the course of the academic year each and every class and teacher will have worked with this specialist. School staff have already attended day courses on Outdoor Activities, Dance and Games. As well as this the PE coordinator has also attended twilight network meetings and a number of different staff have taken part in specific sport coaching for rugby tag, hockey and dance. The PE curriculum was enhanced with workshops delivered to KS1 by the balletLORENT. They are a leading UK contemporary dance company based in Newcastle upon Tyne. As an Arts Award Centre and Arts Award Supporter organisation, they are able to offer all levels of Arts Award to individuals, community groups and schools, from the entry level Discover to Gold. Buying in of high-quality coaching for after-school activities J. J. Coaching is also supporting our provision of after-school clubs (e.g. Autumn term is Fun & Games (KS1) and Football (KS2)) and lunchtime clubs. We are also part of the Judo School Initiative which will provide our pupils with a 6 week Judo programme after school. The initiative will give children across KS2 the opportunity to learn the fundamentals of Judo. Westgate Hill Primary School will also be working in partnership with Newcastle United Football Club to offer after school clubs for both pupils and their families. This will give the school an excellent opportunity to build on and create strong links with the local community. Children have also already benefitted from a wide range of sports clubs, such as multi-skills, football, hockey and basketball, some of which have been fully funded and some partially funded by the grant, and this will continue throughout the academic year. Every club this term has been 100% full and in turn we are currently researching additional sport clubs, to continue building on the already improved provision of sport. The feedback from every sports club has been overwhelmingly positive, with children requesting the clubs go on longer and that they would highly recommend them to their friends. We have and will continue to invest in high quality equipment, ensuring that there are more opportunities for children to demonstrate and celebrate their wide range of skills. This does not include the children who have represented the school in team competitions. As part of the development of PE at Westgate Hill Primary school, we will be providing all children with the opportunity to represent their school as part of a team. Purchase of new PE resources In 2014, Westgate Hill Primary School provided a PE Kit for every child. This consisted of a sports bag, white t-shirt and black joggers. This was to empower children in PE, overcoming barriers of children feeling left out and impact on the number of pupils who participate in PE. We invested in badges for children who attended after school sport clubs. All staff at Westgate Hill Primary school have been provided with a staff PE kit. This is to empower staff and in turn, increase the participation of children in sport. We will continue to provide a PE Kit for all new children and staff to Westgate Hill Primary School. We have also invested in playground equipment for Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2. In order to raise the profile of sport and staying active, we are providing all children with a range of fun activities to use during break and lunch times. We are currently developing and improving the physical environment, allowing us to provide a range of sporting activities on the field, MUGA and yards. We have utilised this funding to: Hire specialist qualified sports coaches to work with teachers when teaching PE Supporting and engaging children in lessons that signpost club membership Funding professional development opportunities for staff Providing cover to staff for professional development in PE Running competitions and increasing pupils’ participation in the School Games Buying materials for PE and sport and outdoor activities Impact of the Sports Premium Grant Throughout the 3 years of receiving the PE and sports premium, we have been collating and analysing the impact of CPD. Impact on staff is measured through a CPD questionnaire, filled in before and after the CPD. The NUFC CPD impacted on the staff’s knowledge and confidence about teaching ball skills, with staff’s confidence levels increasing by at least 1 step. JJ Coaching CPD has currently impacted on the staff’s knowledge and confidence about teaching gymnastics and dance, with all staff’s confidence levels increasing by 1-3 steps. After teachers have team taught with the coaches at JJ Coaching, they are observed teaching a PE lesson using the Create Development scheme of work. This feedback is then shared with the Sport Leader and the teachers. The feedback has been very positive, with improvements identified. JJ Coaching carry out an assessment of the pupil’s ability in each area of the Create Development scheme of work at the beginning and at the end of the CPD. This is then analysed by the Sports Leader to identify progress within each class. The impact of this spending can be seen: In the numbers of children engaging in PE and Sport extra-curricular activities In the numbers of children engaging in PE and Sport out of school The quality and range of expertise staff at Westgate Hill Primary have The quality and range of extra-curricular activities available at Westgate Hill Primary The quality and range of competitive opportunities available to children, including inter and intra school competitions The quality and range of resources including opportunities for outdoor self-initiated play to improve fitness and stamina during less structures times of the day for example lunchtime The quality of leadership of PE at Westgate Hill Primary and the impact the PE team have in maintaining the profile and status of the subject Expenditure to-date for 2016-17 PE kits for children Youth Trust J J Coaching – CPD J J Coaching – Clubs Newcastle United Foundation PE Equipment and Resources Total £1302.25 £200.00 £4320.00 £4500.00 £1500.00 £1771.93 £13594.18* * Includes £3358.18 Carry over from 2015/16 Impact PE Kits for children- This consisted of a sports bag, white t-shirt and black joggers.
