Kitzsteinhorn: Putting Safety First in Freeriding
Five varied freeride routes, “Freeride XXL” information system as well as regular workshops for
beginners and advanced freeriders: in the 2012/2013 season, Kitzsteinhorn is all about freeriding! The
powder fields, cliff jumps, and natural pipes of the freeride routes have made the glacier at Zell am SeeKaprun, Austria, one of the most popular freeride spots in the Alps. Plus, there’s the informative
signage that follows the “Safety first!” principle. It concentrates on a comprehensive education on
alpine dangers and calls on individual responsibility. New this winter, the ski schools of Kaprun offer
the Freeride Mondays. These regular workshops for beginners and advanced freeriders will be held
every Monday. The first-class off-piste terrain at Kitzsteinhorn will also be the venue of a qualifier event
of the Swatch Freeride World Tour by The North Face. At X OVER RIDE Kitzsteinhorn from March 22 to
24, 2013, international top riders will fight for precious points for the overall ranking of the world’s
leading freeride series.
For beginners and advanced freeriders: Freeride Mondays
Each Monday between November 26, 2012, and May 2, 2013, from 10 am to 12.30 pm, Kaprun’s ski schools
give you the opportunity to experience the fascination of freeriding. At the Freeride Mondays, the pros of ski
schools Hartweger's Ski & Board mit Uns! and Oberschneider give skiers and snowboarders older than 13
years tips to improve their riding technique and on safety issues. The “Start-up” workshops show beginners the
world of freeriding. Participants should be able to ride confidently on groomed slopes and have to carry safety
equipment (backpack, avalanche transceiver, shovel, probe), which is also available for rent. Information and
booking at Skischule Oberschneider (Phone +43/(0)6547/8232). At the “Advanced” workshops, advanced
freeriders enjoy the most beautiful off-piste runs at Kitzsteinhorn. Participants should be able to ride confidently
on groomed slopes and have basic off-piste skills. They have to carry safety equipment, which is also available
for rent. Information and booking at Hartweger's Ski & Board mit Uns! (Phone +43/(0)664/3381582). The halfday workshops are € 79,- each plus lift ticket. Meeting point: InfoService at Alpincenter. You should register until
Sunday, 4 pm.
Contest with international top freeriders: X OVER RIDE Kitzsteinhorn
X OVER RIDE Kitzsteinhorn 2013, a Qualifier of the Swatch Freeride World Tour by The North Face, promises
top-level freeriding. At this big mountain contest of the world’s most important freeride tour from March 22 to 24,
2013, national and international top riders will fight for the prize-money and vital points for the overall ranking.
Starting is only eligible to riders with a Freeride World Tour ranking.
Five routes with informative signage: from Ice Age to Pipe Line!
Due to reliable snow conditions and a great variety of off-piste runs, Kitzsteinhorn glacier is one of the most
popular freeriding hot spots of the Alps. Already in early winter, the first freeriders enjoy the fresh fallen snow on
their wide skis and snowboards. The lifts reaching up to 3,000 m give them the opportunity to ride powder
earlier than anywhere else. You can enjoy the deep powder on five marked ski routes: “Ice Age“ begins at
2,900 m running through the whole cirque that extends over 2,000 m under the Gipfelbahn towards the
Sonnenkarbahnen. “Westside Story“ is the longest and the highlight of the Kitzsteinhorn routes. “Left Wing“
with medium difficulty covers the beautiful ridges of the Langwied area. “Jump Run“ crosses a groomed slope
and continues on open terrain offering first-class freestyle fun with natural pipes and kickers. And “Pipe Line“
is the shortest route, but it features many natural pipes.
Safety first: Freeride Info Base and Freeride Info Points
At the Freeride Info Base next to the Alpincenter and the Freeride Info Points close to the starting points of
the freeride routes, freeriders can gather information on the dangers off-piste, as anyone who dares to ride

powder should not leave without appropriate safety precautions. In addition to a good riding technique,
freeriders need the right equipment as well as up-to-date knowledge of location, terrain, weather and snow
conditions. At the Freeride Info Base, they can get all the news on the open freeride routes as well as current
weather, snow and avalanche conditions. Additionally, they’ll find a checkpoint for their avalanche transceivers,
equipment tips, and much more. At the Freeride Info Points, riders will find more detailed information on the
route, like a topographic map showing the steepness of the slope, dangerous spots, and the most beautiful line.
In addition, they can get advice on security and emergency measures.
The free PIEPS Avalanche Training Center above the Alpincenter offers off-piste fans the perfect conditions
to practise the handling of their avalanche transceiver, probe and shovel. Equipped with a touch-screen, the
computer-operated installation enables the user to train independently at any time. Riders can choose from
different levels of difficulty and analyse the results on site or online at home.
