Often referred to as a “waking dream,” sandplay is a non-verbal form of play therapy that can be effective with
both children and adults. The individual uses sand, water and miniature objects to create a manifestation of
the inner world of the psyche.
This six-hour workshop will be presented in two parts. In the morning, basic Jungian concepts and the
theoretical bases of sandplay as developed by Dora Kalff will be discussed. Introduction to sandplay, the
significance of the first tray, developmental characteristics of sandtrays and the sandplay journey in “a free
and protected space” will be included. Sandplay therapy has shown its effectiveness with early medical
trauma. In the afternoon, a long-term sandplay case will demonstrate how trauma can be healed through
sandplay therapy.
This workshop is eligible to provide Play Therapy CEUs because Sandplay is a modality often used by play
therapist to invite their client to use the play process for healing. Imagination comes to life in the “free and
protected space” of the sand tray same as a child who is invited into a play room.
Learning Objectives
At the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:
1. Discuss the three theoretical roots of sandplay and how they relate to play therapy.
2. Describe two ways that the sandtrays of a 4-6 year old likely differ from sandtrays of an 11-12 year old.
3. Describe what is meant by “the free and protected space” in sandplay.
4. Discuss the role of the therapist in sandplay therapy versus the role of the therapist in play therapy.
5. Describe how the opportunity for a Self tray arises in Sandplay Therapy.
