OAKLAND RISING FIELD DIRECTOR Oakland Rising educates and mobilizes voters in the flatlands to speak up for and take charge of the issues impacting our lives. Oakland Rising is a collaborative of: the Asian Pacific Environmental Network, the East Bay Alliance for a Sustainable Economy, the Ella Baker Center for Human Rights, Causa Justa :: Just Cause, and Mujeres Unidas Y Activas. Position Summary: Oakland Rising (OR) seeks an enthusiastic, hard-­‐working Field Director to direct our collective civic participation activities. The ideal candidate will have working knowledge and experience with electoral organizing and a commitment to social justice and equity for low-­‐income, immigrant and communities of color. This position will report directly to Oakland Rising’s Executive Director. Primary Roles & Responsibilities: 1. Direct Field Operations, including: • Develop long and short term electoral strategy and field goals with active support and input from member organizations. • Manage, track and analyze voter file data to inform campaign planning and overall political strategy. • Develop strategic and technical electoral organizing and campaign trainings for staff, alliance members, team leaders, paid canvassers and volunteers. • Direct & administer field operations to meet agreed upon goals; including endorsement process, phone banks, canvasses, and mobilizations for paid canvassers and volunteers. • Drive & track volunteer recruitment, training, and supervision to ensure overall goals are met, with active support and input from member organizations. • Build campaign teams of 20-­‐40 paid canvassers with a variety of language capacities by recruiting from within the local community. Interview prospective canvassers and make hiring decisions. Manage training, supervision and pacing of paid canvassers, and administration of contracts. • Develop and manage campaign budgets. • Improve the field operations of the alliance throughout the year -­‐ jointly plan and evaluate campaign opportunities and goals. • Produce post-­‐campaign reports tracking work outcomes, collaborative developments, and political impact for multiple audiences. • Convene, manage, and train field team of key staff from member organizations throughout the year to support the implementation of campaigns. • Conduct field team assessments, work with supervisor to develop electoral skills development training plan, and support skills and leadership development of field team. • Produce and distribute campaign mailings and communications materials. • Participate as the lead staff member in the California Calls Field Operations workgroup, and other committees and meetings as needed. 2. Organizational and Collaborative Coordination and Management • Contribute to the implementation of Oakland Rising’s annual work plan and calendar. • Co-­‐lead, facilitate and participate in Strategy Committee meetings, including developing agendas and supporting materials, facilitating, evaluating and reporting out notes and next steps. • Prepare reports for and participate in Advisory Board meetings. • Convene, facilitate and participate in Oakland Rising’s collaborative working groups; including Field Team, and Local Ask working groups. • Work closely with the Deputy Director to strategically integrate policy work with field work. • Share responsibility with lead staff for staff retreats and partner convenings, including the development of the agenda and facilitation, and/or preparing alliance facilitators, material development, reporting out notes and next steps. • Outreach to potential organizational allies, and coordinate on-­‐going relationship building and check-­‐in meetings. Share responsibility with Director level staff to strategize and convene events and mobilizations around active political and policy battles. • Participate as the lead staff member in the California Calls Political Education workgroup, Annual Convening workgroup, and Coordinating Committee. 3. Communications Coordination and Management • Develop content for the website and newsletter. Manage content updates to the website in sync with newsletter release, syndicating to social media and networking sites. • Work with Powerbase to utilize their database and tools to support field work. 4. Fundraising • Facilitate coordination between development plan and program to engage in cross-­‐component grassroots fundraising. • Work with Director of Community Partnerships to develop plan for volunteers and interns to support Oakland Rising programmatic and grassroots fundraising work, including forming a working volunteer network. • Attend and support special events and activities with individual donors, including house parties, dinners, annual events, and briefings. • Contribute to programmatic sections of grant proposals and reports. • Participate in foundation/funder meetings and convenings. 5. Organizational Leadership • Work closely with Executive Director and Deputy Director in strategic planning and evaluating/refining programs to meet the goals and objectives of the organization. • Bring Director level organizational leadership in support of the organizations culture, pace and practices. • Participate on leadership team to coordinate organization-­‐wide work, monitor overall health and functioning of the organization, and facilitate effective organizational responses to opportunities and challenges. • Consult on strategic questions beyond the scope of campaigns. Required Qualifications: • Strong work ethic and personal commitment to excellence • Willingness to learn, be flexible, receive and implement feedback and the ability to work well with others • Three years previous campaign, union or community organizing experience • At least 3 campaigns of direct electoral organizing leadership and/or staffing • Multitasking and attention to details while managing and meeting timelines • Commitment to social, racial, economic, environmental, and gender justice • Valid drivers license and reliable vehicle Skills: • Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal skills • Demonstrated ability to work well under pressure • Respect for people from all walks of life • Familiarity with Oakland and Oakland’s political landscape • Proficiency with Mac computers, Microsoft Office Suite, and voter databases.
