Networks Networks Unit This unit will be split into Assignments and Tasks The tasks will have different criteria: P,M,D (this will help prepare you for Year 9!) P = Everyone should complete M = Most people should attempt D= Some people should attempt Starter Activity Sorta Sentence 1 envelope per table Open it and layout all the cards Sort the cards so that you construct a proper sentence Answer: A computer network is where two or more machines are connected together with the purpose of sharing files and hardware peripherals. If the computers are the same building they are usually connected to form a Local Area Network. If they are a long distance from one another they could be part of a Wide Area Network. WALT How networks can improve communication WILF All students to understand how networks can improve communications Most Students to explain how networks may improve productivity for individuals and organisations Some Students to suggest possible issues that may result from networking What is a Network? A computer network is a group of computers connected to each other electronically. This means that the computers can "talk" to each other and that every computer in the network can send information to the others. Usually, this means that the speed of the connection is fast - faster than a normal connection to the Internet Some basic types of computer networks include: A local area network (often called a LAN) connects two or more computers, and may be called a corporate network in an office or business setting An "internetwork", sometimes called a Wide Area Network (because of the wide distance between networks) connects two or more smaller networks together. The largest internetwork is called the Internet What does it REALLY mean? When computers were first developed, they were mainly intended for people to work on their own machine One day, someone really clever thought ‘wouldn’t it be a good idea to link 2 machines together so that it can share files?’ And so, the first computer network was created! Sharing Stuff A computer connected to a Network is called A WORKSTATION Once connected to a network your workstation can share things with other computers Printer Why? Files Why? ASSIGNMENT 1: What’s the use? Task 1: How networks can improve communications (P1) Task 2: Explain how networks may improve productivity for individuals and organisations (M1) Task 3: Suggest possible issues that may result from networking (M2) HINT - Data Protection Task 1: How networks can improve communications (P1) Make a list of all the different hardware and software communication devices you can think of Communication Communication - Hardware Computers Netbooks Laptops Mobile Phones Smart Phones Satellite Phones Walkie-Talkie Extension Task For each device answer these questions: What do they do? How does this help us to communicate? Communication - Software Instant Messengers Browsers Whats App Facebook Twitter Email Xbox Live PS3 Network How do these devices help with productivity? Productivity “A measure of the efficiency of a person, machine, factory, system, etc., in converting inputs into useful outputs.” Task Choose 1 piece of hardware and 1 piece of software that you use the most Tell us what you use them for Explain / describe how it makes your life easier Explain / describe any issues you might have or it might cause Plenary / Homework Attempt the exam question about the impact of network communications. Bring with you to the next lesson – We will mark it as a class! Complete the following question: [6 marks available] Computer technology has changed the ways in which teenagers interact with each other. Explain how developments in software and hardware have enabled new methods of communication among teenagers. 8L1 – 22nd November Task 2 Individuals & Organisations Individuals • Facebook is a social network that is used by over 200 million people. • Facebook helps individuals by that they can add all their friends, upload photo’s, keep in contact with friends, make groups, make events and make posts on how you are, or what you are doing. The idea of Facebook for individuals is to keep in touch with each other. • Facebook can come in handy for individuals because they can chat to mates, see what events or friends birthdays are coming up. • A fair amount of Facebook users are between the ages of 12-21, so it can distract the user if they have homework or coursework. It’s very easy for cyber bullying to take place on Facebook, also a lot of bullying and racism Organisations • Organisations can use Facebook for advertising, they can make a Facebook group or likes. • Also they can get their logo, advert or item they are selling shown on profiles down the right side of the page. • The organisations that want to do this have to pay Facebook a set amount of money for the advertising slot. • A lot of people use Facebook so it’s a good way to pull in new costumers. Task 2: Explain how networks may improve productivity for individuals and organisations (M1) Make a poster that explains how networks can improve communications for individuals and organisations. Task 3 Issues with Networking Starter What problems can people have when using networks to communicate? People Businesses Starter People Businesses • Difficulty communicating via calls, texts, emails and social networks • Missing appointments • Losing work • Can’t save homework • Problems with internet banking • Doing homework is harder • Can cost money • Can stop people being productive • Unable to exchange information • No access to files • Cannot print or save your work • Emails cannot be sent • Phone switchboards can stop • Can’t transfer money electronically WALT How networks can improve communications for individuals and organisations What issues networks can have and what impact they have on individuals and organisations Why a network might go down Power Surge System Overload / too many users Faulty Equipment Cyber Attack / Terrorists Hackers Server Problems Cables removed / fallen out Viruses Power Cut WILF Complete your poster that clearly discusses how networks IMPROVE communications for both individuals and organisations Use relevant pictures and explain your thoughts Research the possible issues that you could have when using networks when communicating, both for individuals and organisations Task 3: Suggest possible issues that may result from networking Using the internet, research what kinds of issues both individuals and organisations can have when using networks to communicate Type an essay (1 A4 page, font size 12) that explains the types of issues you can have You should be looking for problems, how to resolve them and what the impact is on people and businesses Homework Write down 3 questions that you could ask the IT Technicians about the network here at school It can be anything from how it is set up to what equipment they use and how they manage it Due: 20th December Networks 8ITP2 WALT To understand the features and uses of local and wide area networks WILF Level 4 = Complete the exam style theory task using the internet to help you (searching & selecting information) Level 5 = Design a leaflet that tells you all about the different types of networks (WAN and LAN) – it must explain clearly what they both are with pictures) Level 6 = Devise your own LAN for your home, include all the gadgets and computer accessories you use WAN & LAN Explained Networks A network is two or more computers connected together so they can communicate which each other. There are 2 main types of network… Networks: LANs LAN stands for: LOCAL AREA NETWORK LANs are networks that are found where computers within a building need to communicate. Types of LAN are: >Peer-to-peer >Client-server They are Small and Local! Peer-to-peer Here, two or more computers are connected directly so that employees doing the same kind of work can share applications and data. This system tends to be very slow, but it is robust as it does not rely on a central server which can fail. Client-server Here, one powerful computer in the network acts as a server to all the others The server computer holds all the application software and the shared files All the files are stored centrally and users have the possibility of working on the same file at the same time Networks: WANs WAN stands for: WIDE AREA NETWORK WANs are networks that are found where computers in different areas or countries need to communicate. They are long range and not local! Task 1 – Level 4 Open up the Word Document called 8ITL2 – Theory S:\ICT\2013-14\KS3\Year 8\Networks Click on the link in the Word Document (remember to hold the CTRL key when you click!) You will be taken to a ‘micro-site’ (a mini website) that gives you the answers Answer the questions using the micro-site to help you Task 2 (Level 5) Design a leaflet that tells you all about the different types of networks (WAN and LAN) – it must explain clearly what they both are with pictures) Task 3 (Level 6) Devise your own LAN for your home, include all the gadgets and computer accessories you use Draw a picture of all the gadgets and computers that you have at home Link them all together using the theory you have learnt from this unit E.g. Wireless Router is linked to Laptop, Desktop PC, Printer, Scanner, Xbox 360 etc. Plenary Questions & Answers Answer the questions we have written for homework as if you were the IT Technicians Can you link your theory to the answer?
