Eukaryotic Cell Structure What do my classmates and I already know about eukaryotic cells? 12/13/16 Eukaryotic cells have a nucleus Unicellular Multicellular Eukaryotic cells are in plants & animals Can’t see it w/out a device Humans have eukaryotic cell Eukaryotic is a domain Unicellular organisms can be eukaryotic or prokaryotic All living things are made of cells What is the Cell Theory and Hx of microbiology? 1/3/17 Cell Theory= common explanation re: the relationship btwn living things & cells Cell Theory states: 1) All living things are made of cells 2) Cells are the smallest living thing (microscopic) 3) Cells come from other cells Schleiden, Schwann & Virchow came up w/cell theory circa 1850’s Invention of the microscope made the CT possible…circa 1600ish Hooke (1660ish): first to name cells…use the word to describe what he saw in cork under his microscope; looking @ multicellular, dead stuff; no one knows what Hooke looks like b/c Sir Isaac Newton destroyed his only portrait Leeuwenhoek (1660ish): first to see living, moving single-celled organisms…looked at lake water & teeth gunk! Brown (1830ish): discovered & named the nucleus in plant cells What are the ingredients of eukaryotic cells? What is the structure of eukaryotic cells? 1/5/17 Ingredients: 1) 2) 3) 4) 5) DNA/RNA=nucleic acids…≈1.5% of total wgt Carbohydrates=sugars…≈2.5% Lipids=fats/oils…≈1% Proteins…≈5% H2O…≈90%; humans will die in 3 days w/out H2O but 120 days w/out food Structure (parts & pieces): Chart taped-in Diversity: Structure=function…how a cell is built enables it to do its job for the organism Cells only have the organelles needed for its job in the organism Animal cells come in a variety of shapes, sizes & colors Plant cells are all boxy-shaped to help give the plant height (stackable!) & green, white, brown, or flower colored What did I learn from the video, “Cells” 1/20/17
