@stbedesmiddle Stbedesmiddle Friday, 10 March 2017 Principal’s Update NoticeBoard Dear Parents and Carers I hope you have had a good week. There are certainly some signs of spring - the field is eagerly awaiting its first cut! #This will be done, weather permitting, after Easter. The long jump pit is going in this week so, with the snagging of sports hall coming to an end, we are nearing the end of that project and looking forward to getting the full use of the flatter, better drained field, new cricket strip and amazing sports hall. Things never stay still and we are pushing forward with improvements to school all the time (using money which can be spent on specific building projects only). The next project we are looking at is being able to convert the old, outside, changing rooms (which was previously a potting shed) into a cafe and serving area, so pupils can have break time and lunchtime snacks and food served to them. We are also looking at using this space as a teaching resource, to allow small groups to work in there and have the facility to prepare food, if required. I think it will be great for afternoon teas in the summer and cool drinks on sports day, just imagine! I have had figures from county yet again which show that St Bede’s pupils are the top progressing pupils from KS2 to KS4 in Worcestershire (That’s SATs in Year 6 through to GCSE in Year 11). Not only that, they are also the second highest achieving in the new attainment 8 measure in Worcestershire. This indicates the strong and balanced curriculum pupils receive here at St Bede’s, in tandem with the excellent work of our feeder schools (predominately St Augustine’s). As we enter the second week of lent, we are thinking about the preparation of the Stations of the Cross that we have not have had in school before. Mrs Downes will working with pupils in preparation for this. I’m looking forward to seeing pupils have the opportunity to reflect deeply at Christs passion. Our Year 8 football team has made it through to the National Finals, details to follow next week….. Year 8 Skern Lodge Residential Visit We are hosting an information evening for parents on Wednesday 15 March 2017, from 6.30 – 7.30 pm. Pupils have been issued with a double sided medical form which they will ask parents/carers to complete before returning them to school. Mr L Roberts Principal @MrRBedes Attendance Year 5 Year 6 97.04% 96.62% Year 7 Year 8 95.66% 96.38% Whole School Attendance 96.44% @stbedesmiddle Stbedesmiddle Years 7/8 Confirmandi—Important Information A Reminder regarding the planned Sacramental Programme Attendance at the planned Sacramental Preparation sessions at St Bede's School on Monday evenings are not a voluntary commitment or an optional extra. We understand that there will be times of genuine unavailability due to illness, family circumstances and bereavement but wish to stress that attendance is mandatory. Each session for both the Parishes of OLMC and ST Peter's Bromsgrove are for PUPILS ONLY. Parents are NOT required to attend or stay for the duration of the session. By presenting themselves for the recent Enrolment Masses this means that each young person who wishes to make their Confirmation this year are now fully committed to the programme and MUST ATTEND all available sessions provided. Punctuality is key also. Can all Confirmandi who attend these sessions please arrive promptly at 6pm. The timings are such that the programme can be successfully delivered and run from 6-7pm. It is important that these timings be adhered to as there is much to cover in each session. Failure to attend more than one session may result in individuals being taken off the programme. Catch up sessions are being organised at a later date for genuine cases such as bereavement, illness and unforeseen family circumstances but not for lack of commitment with no apparent reason being given. Confirmation Deadline Reminders The Confirmation Mass preference Letter has been sent via email and is also available on the school website (please do check and download if this applies) The deadline for the proforma from this letter to be returned to Miss Downes in school is Friday, 7 April 2017. The planned Confirmation retreat letter has also been sent via email and is also available on the school website (please do check and download if this applies) The deadline for the proforma and payment for the Retreat contribution to be returned to the School Finance Office is Monday, 20 March 2017. All completed yellow Sponsor Cards are to be returned to Miss Downes in school by Friday, 7 April. Please note these deadlines and adhere to them as closely as possible. These deadlines will not be extended further. Many thanks Miss S Downes ‘Drop in’ Club for Confirmandi From Tuesday, 7 March 2017 Miss Howard-Biggs will be running a ‘drop in’ style club for those who are being Confirmed this year who are struggling with inspiration in choosing a saint’s name for their confirmation name. This club will run every Tuesday until Easter and is completely voluntary – it is an opportunity to come to Room 8 and research Saints to help with choosing a name. 12:15-12:45 and come along as often as you like! Please see Miss Howard-Biggs for any more information. @stbedesmiddle Stbedesmiddle Year 7 and 8 Rugby Mixed fortunes from the Years 7 and 8 rugby teams so far this term. Last week saw the Year 8 team knocked out of the County plate competition in the semi-final against Hanley Castle. Hanley Castle were only up by one try at half time and we were well and truly in the game. However, Hanley Castle used the experience they had gained from their season to run away with the game in the second half. This was the Year 8’s first game of the season and they showed passages of fantastic rugby, with a lot of potential to grow into a brilliant team! We look to the league now to gain more match experience. The Year 7’s stormed into the first game of the season with a win against Alvechurch. Bede’s showed the potential of the damage we can do when we can get the ball wide into space, with some brilliant trys through the backs. Alvechurch were very worthy opposition, with the score line being at 2 trys each with 5 minutes to go. But showing brilliant ball retention, we managed to score the winning try and close out the game strongly. We have now topped the group and will face the second place from group 2 in the semi-final of the district competition. Daniel Zdanka, Harley-Ray Cook, George Skelton, Harvey Jackson, Lewis Simmons, Finley Heath, Owen Alekna, James Rowand, George Rowand, Harry Rowand, Reece Vervoot, Michael Coleman, Leo Zaballero, Harry Monaghan, Jacob Buckley, Stan Amos, Sam Knebel, Tom Sanders, Archie Brady, Gabriel Kubon, James Wynne, Corey Dorgan, Hadeeq Malik, Tyree Warburton, Reece, Matthew Brown, Lewis Simmons, Mikey Richards, Jakub Mierzejewski, Regan Salisbury and Justin Jai. UKMT Maths Challenge On Tuesday, 2 of our year 8 pupils, Sam Summers and Briana Daison, teamed up with 2 pupils in Year 9 from St. Augustine’s, Ellie Sabin and Will Henson, to enter the UKMT Team Challenge regional finals. During this event they took part in solving a range of difficult mathematical questions in a variety of ways, including a rather energetic relay at the end. The team of pupils represented the academy with an heir of professionalism and were able to finish the competition at 13th out of 26, a very respectable top half position. Very well done. UNIFORM Please ensure that ALL uniform/ PE kit/lunch boxes/water bottles are clearly named so that they can be returned to your child if they are mislaid. MEDICAL CONDITIONS It is parents’ responsibility to keep school updated about any new/ changes in pupil’s medical conditions,. If you need a Care Plan or Permission to Administer Medication in School letter, please contact Mrs Simmons in reception. Pupils are expected to have plain water in a clear bottle for their drink. Anything else will be confiscated and either tipped out so that they can use their own bottle for water or confiscated until the end of the day. We are looking for gardening donations such as soil/compost, seeds, bulbs, canes, gloves, small trowels, large plant pots and bird/bee houses to enable us to use the Green House and gardening area at the back of the Art room. We are hoping that it will not only brighten up the area but also attract insects and enable the children to get outside when the weather is nice. @stbedesmiddle Stbedesmiddle World Book Day KS2 Story Relay: Once upon a time, there was a large, beautiful McDonalds and it turned babies in to purple, sparkly unicorns. Then when they pooped out rainbows, they flew into the air and exploded like an ice cream bomb. Sometimes, they didn’t explode and they flew so high that they went into space and they met the wonderful, fabulous Tim Peake. If you ever get to meet Tim Peake, he will give you three amazing wishes! Every time you use a wish, 25 unicorns die so use them carefully! One day, a hero would raise up and his name was Will Smith! He loved unicorns and had a huge belief that they can make the world a better place. Will Smith also had a much darker side which the world did not yet know… Will Smith was plotting to fill the sky with candy floss so that Tim Peake could no longer escape to space. Tim Peake found a flying potato and he flew rapidly into the sky where he ate all of the delicious candy which angered Will Smith greatly! @stbedesmiddle Stbedesmiddle Year 8 Indoor Athletics I was delighted to take the Year 8 boys team presenting Redditch to the Worcestershire school games on Tuesday at Worcester University. The boys were competing in the Indoor Athletics against the District winners from the rest of Worcestershire. The events were divided into two, track and field events. Each of the boys were able to represent Redditch in three events. There were brilliant performances all afternoon and it would be rude to mention a particular one as it was a cumulative effort. The boys won first prize by 20 points, which I think, was the most significant margin of the day. I was pleased to see the team do a faultless sprint relay – as it demonstrated the sheer athleticism, drive, concentration and passion of the whole team. The boys were an absolute delight and their behaviour was brilliant given that they are a group of 8 highly competitive and bright individuals. Regan Salisbury, Matthew Barratt, Tom Sanders, George Hall, George Skelton, Tyree Warburton, Gabriel Kubon and Cian Hodson Mr L Roberts @BedesPE @stbedesmiddle Stbedesmiddle District Swimming Gala Champions Last Friday saw St Bede’s return to the district swimming gala and as previous champions, the pressure was on to perform once again! The swimmers from Years 5 and 6 all showed a fantastic competitive nature and they managed to win almost all of their races. Following this, St Bede’s will represent Redditch in the next round of the competition in the Worcestershire School Games in the Summer. Kiera-Leigh Phillips, Lucy Hatfield, Victoria Burke, Lacie Almquest, Meibh McInnes, Charlotte Rooke, Maisy Ryan, Alice Wright, Riley Perry, William Pioli, Cameron Campbell, Finley Hayden, Elliot Ray, Stan Amos, Ben Skelton and Hayden Baker. Congratulations to all involved! @BedesPE @stbedesmiddle Stbedesmiddle Catholicity Update First Week of Lent The Lord says; “I am going to lure her (His people, the People of Israel and us, His adopted sons and daughters in Christ) and lead her out into the wilderness and speak to her heart.” Hosea 2:16 How’s your Lent going? Perhaps things are going well for you, you are managing to keep to all those promises you made at or after the Ash Wednesday Masses last week. You are doing well with all your praying, fasting and charitable giving. Or, if we are totally honest, things are not as easy as we hoped. We are missing those things we have tried to give up. Prayer is hard work and we may not feel that we are really doing very much to help those in need. We may have abandoned our resolutions altogether. Don’t worry and do not lose heart! Remember the Lord in His love looks on our hearts and He knows us better than we know ourselves. It is best to try and stick to a couple of things rather than give up or take on too much! Lent is really a time for creating space for God. Our lives are always so crowded with all the things which occupy our time and His still small voice can so often be drowned out with all our hectic pace and lifestyle. God always seems to speak best to us when we are still and can hear His soft whispers. Over these next few weeks, may we aim to listen more to the still small voice of the Lord. Our prayer this week: Father God, As we begin our Lenten journey we need Your grace especially when we are facing temptation and difficulties. There are so many things that would lead us away from You and make us compromise our faith. Help us to grow more like Jesus, Your Son, who remained strong and firm in the midst of His trying times. In His Name we pray. Amen. @BedesRE Epraise Update Log in now to see your child’s weekly update St Bede’s on Twitter See a list of all our social media accounts @stbedesmiddle Stbedesmiddle @stbedesmiddle Stbedesmiddle St Bede’s is collecting Active Kids vouchers from Sainsbury’s this year so, if you have any you’d like to donate, please hand them in to Mrs Simmons in Reception.
