Having problems accessing online resources? – Trouble shooting To start with check the options below – do any of them describe the situation you are in? If so please follow the advice which is given. If your situation is not described below, or if you have followed the advice and you are still having problems, please get in contact with us (we will respond within staffed opening hours): Email: [email protected] Phone: 01962 827051 When you get in touch with us we may well ask you for some more information, so that we can identify what the problem is. Journal article problems: Log on to the intranet Make sure that you have logged in to the University intranet at least once. It is best to start all searches by going to www.winchester.ac.uk > login > library > using the library catalogue or specific databases. Have you used the options on the left hand side of the page: Refine your search > Full text only > Yes? If you have not selected ‘Full text only’ then you will find results which the Library does not subscribe to (i.e. you are not entitled to access.) If you would like to have access to an article in this case, please email [email protected] , explaining that you are a Distance / Blended Learning student (N.B. there is a charge of £2.50 per Inter Library Loan request.) Updated June 14 You can hide all results which you are not entitled to access by selecting ‘Full text only’ > Yes. You will now only see results for which you are entitled to read the full text. Have you entered your Library borrower number where prompted in the yellow box on the results page? First, you will need to log in by entering your library borrower number in the yellow box, before you click on the link for ‘view online’. Do not click on ‘view online’ first. Your library borrower number is on the back of your student ID card and has an extra digit (or the letter X) at the end when compared to your student number. If you have not been issued with at student ID card then you will not have a borrower number. Without a borrower number you will not be able to access this resource. If this is the case please contact your Department or Faculty. Other journal queries: check that we subscribe to what you want to view If you are trying to view a journal article, make sure that you are entitled to view it (check that the library subscribes to the journal and the date range which you need.) You can find out if the library subscribes to the journal by going to the Library catalogue. Search on the Library catalogue (local catalogue option) for the title of the journal. Updated June 14 How do I find out the title of the journal? In the following example, the title of the journal is: Journal of classical sociology. Fine, R. (2013.) Natural law and critical theory: Bringing rights back in. Journal of classical sociology, 13(2), 222-238. If there are no results for the title of the journal then we do not subscribe to it. In this case you will need to request this article via our Inter Library Loan Service if you want to access it. If we do subscribe to the journal (i.e. it is found through searching the catalogue) then you should check that we subscribe to the date range you need. You can do this by searching for the journal on the catalogue, then clicking on the title to view the information about the journal in more detail. In this example, we have subscribe to the journal in two formats: In paper (the Stack) from 2004 to 2005 (the Stack is on the ground floor of the Library); Online from 2001 onwards, up to the most recent issue. If we do not subscribe to the date range which you need, you will need to request this article via our Inter Library Loan Service if you want to have access to it. Updated June 14 Other log in problems: How to identify yourself to a resource You may need to perform some steps in order to confirm to the resource that you are a student at the University of Winchester. (It is your status as our student which entitles you to access resources.) You can ‘identify’ yourself in a number of ways. Each webpage may look different; these points should help: Look for a ‘Sign in’ or ‘Log in’ option (usually at the top of the screen.) If you find this, look for any of the following to click on: ‘Sign in via OpenAthens’ / ‘Athens Log in’ / ‘Alternative Login’. Do not enter your University username / password on the website at this stage. Look for an option to search for and select the University of Winchester out of a list of Universities. Updated June 14 If you have followed either of these 2 steps, you may then be taken to a new page: You may then be taken to the following page – click on the writing ‘Go to The University of Winchester login page’. Once you have successfully identified yourself to the resource, you will see the words ‘University of Winchester’ in the top left or right of the webpage. Updated June 14 Log in problems – an alternative route: If you have tried all of the above without success, you may wish to try the following route. Go to www.athens.ac.uk Select ‘Login to MyAthens’ You will now see an alphabetical list of all resources – select the resource which you need. Once at the resource, search within it for the specific information you are looking for (for example, author / title of a journal article.) eBook problems: If you are having problems downloading a dawsonera eBook to a mobile device, please see dawsonera’s Help Guides (https://www.dawsonera.com/helpPage) If your query is not covered here, or you are still having problems, please do get in touch with us (rather than giving up!)
