Graduate Favorites Doo Wop Hanover and
Rockeyed Optimist Leading Resurgence of
Steve Elliott Barn
By Bill Finley
Steve Elliott has the ability to boil everything down to the
simplest terms. W hy is he doing so well this year after a
rare down period in his career?
"I have good horses," he replied.
It's obviously a bit more
complicated than that, but Elliott
does have a point. In Rockeyed
Optimist and Doo W op Hanover he
has two horses that are on top of
their games, making good money
and figure to dominate in the
$250,000 final of the Graduate
Series for 4-year-old pacers tonight
at the Meadowlands. They could
be the two best horses he's had
since Well Said and Donato

his best year since
But what they have done,
2007
besides winning, is to revive a
stable that had suffered through some poor years. Elliott's
barn peaked in 2007 when Donato Hanover won the
Hambletonian and the stable earned $5,051,665 for the
year. But just five years later, Elliott's horses earned just
$661,030 and he won only 35 races. He says the poor
showing was the result of a number of things, including his
decision to cut back on the size of his stable.
“(When you are doing well) They think you have the
magic drug. That's the way this business is. You're going
good so you have to be using something. It not because
you work hard or have good horses, it's because you have
some kind of drug. It's almost where it's comical.
–Steve Elliott
W hen things weren't going well he never got
discouraged. At 61, he's been in the business a long time
and has learned that you should never get too up or too
down, that is if you want to keep your sanity.
"You can't have any ego in this business," he said.
"You're going to have good years and bad years. That's
just horses. You can't get down or second guess yourself.
You just keep doing what you've always done to have
success and you stick with it. If you start second guessing
yourself you'll get in trouble."
Elliott still doesn't have a particularly big operation. He
currently trains 38 horses and said he wishes he had fewer.
But they are a productive bunch. Elliott has already won 53
races this year, equaling the amount he won all of last year,
and his barn will almost certainly go over the $1 million
mark in earnings tonight. Last year, his stable earned just
$1.15 million.
"W e have a nice mix of horses," he said. "No great ones,
just a nice mix."
Along with Rockeyed Optimist and Doo W op Hanover, he
has Stacia Hanover, a winner of an elimination for the
James Lynch Memorial, New York sire stakes winners
Rock Me Gently, Artistic Major and Not Before Eight and
Pennsylvania sire stakes winner Mcardles Lightning. He's
also high on a trio of 2-year-olds in Soulmate Hanover, Talk
Show and Boston Red Rocks. The latter will be among the
favorites in a New Jersey sire stakes race tonight at the
Meadowlands.
There is one thing, though, that does bother Elliott. He
said he's tired of people concluding that the only reason he
is having such a good year is that he has found a magic
and illegal potion.
"W henever you do good everyone wants to give you
horses and after a while you just have to say no," he said.
"They think you have the magic drug. That's the way this
business is. You're going good so you have to be using

something. It not because you work hard or have good
horses, it's because you have some kind of drug. It's
almost where it's comical. I had an owner call me and he
said he wanted to give me some good horses. He told me
‘you got the stuff.‘ I said, ‘really, what's the stuff?' It's just
amazing how it is. It's just having good horses. It's a shame
that's the mentality in our sport these days. Thoroughbred
guys do well and they put them on a pedestal. A harness
guy does well and they all say you have to be using
something."
Tonight at the Meadowlands, some of his finest work will
be on display. Rockeyed Optimist looked no better than a
good wintertime horse back when was winning the Sonsam
Series and the Clyde Hirt Series, but he has kept right on
going into the prime racing season. He won two legs of the
Graduate series before finishing second behind stable Doo
Wop Hanover in his last.
"He was getting good last year," Elliott said. "W e turned
him out and when he came back he was a different horse.
When we brought back he had grown and filled out and has
kept getting better and better. They let me pick his
schedule and I said let's not race him against the older
horses, let's stick with the 4-year-olds this year and
hopefully by doing that we'll turn him into an open pacer. It
looks like we did the right thing."
Doo Wop Hanover has won three straight, his biggest win
to date coming when he scored a mild upset over
Rockeyed Optimist in the most recent leg of the Graduate.
"He was notch or two below the good colts last year,"
Elliott said. "If he got a good trip he could go with them, but
it was hard for him to get a trip because he was kind of
bull-headed and when he wanted to go he wanted to go all
he could go. W hen we brought him back up here this year
he was similar to way he was. We made one little
equipment change and it changed him completely around."
The two will battle for favoritism tonight and very well
could finish one-two again. If so, Elliott will be in the
winner's circle, ready to give all the credit to his horses.

allowed to compete because of Jeff Gural's rules? To me
that's totally absurd,” Katz said.
Katz is also the co-owner of 2014 Horse of the Year JK
She'salady, who has struggled this year and lost her last
three. He said trainer Nancy Johansson will race the filly on
Lasix next time out, hoping that helps wake her up.
"For some reason, she hasn't raced like she did last
year," Katz said. "There's nothing Nancy can come up with.
She said the filly is sound and looks like a million dollars."

Due to a Gural Rule, Burke Loses JK
Endofanera
By Bill Finley
The Three Brothers Stable has moved millionaire JK
Endofanera to the Jimmy
Takter barn, and the North
America Cup winner will
make his first start for his
new connections tomorrow
night in an Open at Pocono
Downs.
The decision was made

JK Endofanera is now trained
was the odd horse out in

the Graduate Series at the
Meadowlands because previous trainer Ron Burke had
three horses ready to go for the final. At the Meadowlands,
no trainer can start more than two horses in a stakes race.
Burke will start two horses in tonight's $250,000 Graduate
final in All Bets Off and Limelight Beach. Though JK
Endofanera may be better than those two, they are both
co-owned by Burke, who told JK Endofanera's owners that
he felt he had to start his own horses.
Alan Katz of the Three Brothers Stable said he was told
that even with the trainer change the horse could not
compete in the Graduate.
"W e had to do this because of Jeff Gural," Katz said.
"Ronnie Burke wanted to put him in the final but you're only
allowed two in. It's not right and there's nothing we can do
about it. Ronnie Burke is furious. Furious is an
understatement. I'm not happy about it, either. They only
have nine horses in the box and I asked Gural if he could
make it ten. It's not like he was taking a spot away from
another trainer. But Jeff said no and said if he did that he
was worried he might get sued by someone. He left us no
alternative."
Katz said the horse will definitely stay with Takter and not
return to the Burke barn. He said he and his partners chose
Takter because he did not have a bevy of top older male
pacers in his barn. W ith that being the case JK Endofanera
should have no problem getting into future Meadowlands
races.
JK Endofanera is 15 for 30 lifetime and has made
$1,514,947. Though his barn is loaded, losing a horse of JK
Endofanera's talent is a big blow for Burke.

both Keeneland and The Red Mile, which had seen its
facility fall into a state of semi-disrepair in recent years.
Some 75,000 sq. ft. of new and renovated space will
include a roughly 30,000-sq. ft. Grand Hall to house the
historical racing machines. Food capabilities have been
greatly expanded, with a number of grab ‘n' go-style
eateries planned. And the old simulcast facility, which
previously was showing the wear-and-tear of age, is now
unrecognizable, with greatly expanded seating in a
climate-controlled section of the grandstand, and some 160
new flatscreen televisions offering handicappers a broad
array of tracks.
"This won't be your father's Red Mile," Keeneland
President Bill Thomason said yesterday during a hard-hat
tour of the facility.
Thomason isn't wrong. The sleek, modern design,
featuring massive canopies at the East and W est entrances
that are "Sculptural interpretations" of sulky frames, is a far
cry from the staid brick facade of the old Red Mile. The
country-field parking lot is being replaced by a series of
paved lots that will allow parking for up to 750 vehicles, as
well as a separate parking for tour buses.
Inside, the new Red Mile will be just as modern. The
Grand Hall will include a centerpiece bar framed by a
towering two-story structure. Architects have paid homage
to the previous grandstand by leaving portions of the brick
facade exposed, while two existing staircases will be
utilized to allow access between the Grand Hall and the
Harness track.
Keeneland and The Red Mile are partnering 50/50 on
both the historical racing facility and on the simulcast
parlor, and it's a partnership that makes plenty of sense.
Back in April of 2014, both Keeneland and The Red Mile
applied for separate licenses to install historical racing
machines. Keeneland applied for 600 machines, The Red
Mile for 500. For tracks that sit six
miles apart, building separate facilities, and staffing them,
was needlessly redundant, officials at both tracks
concluded.
"It became obvious to us that, for our community and for
our town, it would be best to see if we could work out an
arrangement and build it here," said Thomason. "It made so
much sense, and we developed a model that could help
both of our businesses. They care so much about their
horses and their business, and we found we had a lot in
common."
Moreover, Keeneland saw advantages of closing its
current simulcasting facility in the Keeneland grandstand
and shifting its operations to The Red Mile. The latter track
sits adjacent to the University of Kentucky and its huge
student population, and is just a mile or so from
downtown Lexington.
"For us, it's a much more functional space than our
current simulcast facility," Thomason said. "Our simulcast
patrons want continuity. They don't like to be moved
around--they have their sections they like to sit in, they
have their TVs, they have their tellers, and we could never
provide that kind of continuity. We had to displace them
during racing and for sales and the various things we have
going on. But now, we have a single facility, and we can
work to build new fans out here, which is the goal. It's close
to downtown and easier to get to on a daily basis for
someone getting off work."
The Red Mile, meanwhile, got a well-respected partner
with vast resources to help reestablish itself on the local
entertainment landscape. Originally built in 1875, The Red
Mile hosts Harness Racing's Grand Circuit meet in early
October, which draws some of the sport's biggest stables
and best horses. The Red Mile hosts, among several other
prestigious races, the third leg of the Trotting Triple Crown
during its two-week meet, the Kentucky Futurity.
The new simulcast facility will be unique in the respect
that there will be separate windows for Harness and
Thoroughbred wagering. Keeneland will get all the
Thoroughbred revenues; The Red Mile will retain all
revenues from Standardbred wagering. Signals from
Thoroughbred and Harness tracks will be interspersed on
the TVs in the parlor, however.
One benefit to Keeneland's simulcast patrons is that they
will now be able to bet on tracks that operate at night.
Keeneland usually closed down its simulcast facility at 5 or
6 p.m., and The Red Mile's facility, which is open at night,
didn't accept wagers on Thoroughbred tracks.

The second of the three elims was also won by an

Mr Picolit Had Breathing Problem in US Debut
A Copenhagen Cup winner, Mr Picolit arrived in the U.S.
amid big expectations, but instead flopped in his U.S. debut
as he finished last in a leg of the TVG Series last week at
the Meadowlands. But Bernie Noren, the assistant trainer
for Åke Svanstedt, said the performance came with an
excuse.
"He had some problems with his throat," Noren said. "W e
had to fix that. He flipped his palate and wasn't getting any
air. That's why he was no good. He will train and then have
to qualify. He'll be back in a few weeks."
Meanwhile, the Svanstedt stable has been busy gearing
up its star, Sebastian K, who will make his 2015 debut
tomorrow night at Pocono Downs in the Mohegan Sun
Invitational. It was in that same race last year that he
trotted the fastest race ever, going in 149.
"Sebastian K is training very well," Noren said. "He is
training better this year than he did the year before."

out fractions of :27, :55.1 and 1:23.1 before kicking home in
:27.4 to win by a nose over Cast No Shadow. Delightful
Hill, despite being subjected to a tough trip, was a bang-up
third.
It was the fourth lifetime win for the homebred, who is
owned by Thomas Kyron, Dr. Maurice Stewart, Brian
Paquet and Bayama Farms Inc. The talented pacing lass
has now racked up earnings totaling $513,894. She paid
$2.90.
Solar Sister turned a two-hole trip into her fifth win of the
season thanks to her career-best clocking of 1:50.3 in the
second division.
Doug McNair grabbed the garden spot for Solar Sister,
who stalked Ms Mac N Cheese through fractions of :26.1,
:54.4 and 1:23.2 before angling out and taking a shot at the
tempo setter. Solar Sister stormed home in :27 to win by a
half-length margin over Ms Mac N Cheese. Taking home
third prize in the rich tilt was Capela.
Gregg McNair trains the homebred daughter of Mach
Three-Cabrini Hanover for David W illmot of King City and
Clay Horner of Toronto, Ontario. The seven-time winner
has already racked up more than $270,000 in earnings this
season. The career winner of $485,690 paid $2
As for the two-year-olds in action, Could It Be Magic was
an impressive winner in front-stepping fashion in her debut
for trainer/driver W ayne Henry. The filly blasted to the lead
from Post 8 and rolled the field through fractions of :27.2,
:58.2 and 1:28.2 before using a :28.3 closing panel to win in
1:57 over Liberty Lane and Ready Any Time.
The daughter of Kadabra-In The Mean Time is owned by
Henry Stable of Arthur and Fred Brayford of Alliston,
Ontario. She was an $18,000 purchase from last fall’s
Harrisburg Yearling Sale. She paid $27.90.
W illyorwonthe also pulled off an upset in his first lifetime
start. The homebred son of Angus Hall-Mikestory marched
to the lead and took the field to the quarter pole in :28.2
before releasing race favourite Unitaliano Bi to the top in
the backstretch. That foe sliced out middle splits of :58.1
and 1:28 before being overtaken in the lane by the
re-rallying W illyorwonthe. That colt used a :28.1 final frame
to win in 1:56.3 over V For Victory and Deweylovernleaver.
Veteran horseman Bill Megens of Puslinch, Ontario, bred,
owns and trains the youngster who paid $32.00 in the
winning performance.
Cozy Beach won as she pleased in her pari-mutuel debut
for trainer Casie Coleman. Chris Christoforou had the filly
on the move at the quarter pole, and in a matter of strides
she found herself on the lead. Once there, she led the
group through fractions of :58.1 and 1:27.3 before turning
on the jets in the lane. She fired home in :27.3 to win by
two lengths over Miss Print in 1:55.1. Action Big rounded
out the top three finishers.
The daughter of Somebeachsomewhere-Pears N
Amoretto, who is owned by W est W ins Stable and
Lawrence Dumain, was a $37,000 purchase from last
year’s Harrisburg Yearling Sale. The filly is a
granddaughter of the stakes star, Armbro Amoretto (1:50.1
- $1,604,459).
Friday at Northfield Park: The Maine Man,
Obrigado, Looks to Take Another Stakes
W hen Paul Kelley got together a group of owners and

Obrigado, the pride of Maine, will look to add another
major victory to his record tonight at Northfield
expect. The gelding had just won 21 straight races, but all
of them in Maine, not exactly the mecca of harness racing.
At best, he thought he might have a horse who could do
well in the open trotting ranks at Saratoga.
He got all that, and a lot more.
Obrigado has graduated from Maine racing and is making
a statement that he can compete with any trotter in North
America. Coming off a win in a $50,000 leg of the TVG
Series at the Meadowlands, he will likely be favored in
tonight's $170,000 Cleveland Trotting Classic at Northfield
Park. He drew post two and Mark MacDonald will have the
drive.
"I knew who the horse was but I didn't really know
anything about him," Kelley said. "I checked him out and
liked him. It was a matter of trying to figure out what he was
worth. He had made so much money up in Maine and had
won so many pari-mutuel races we didn't know where we
would start this horse. I am close to Saratoga, so I figured
he’d be an Open I or Open II trotter there. He turned out to
be way more than that. He's very much exceed my
expectations."
Obrigado, who is by Boy Band, proved that he could
compete with the best when fourth, beaten only 1 ½
lengths, in last year's International at Yonkers. He failed to
win any of his first five starts this year, but made a
statement when winning the TVG.
"I think he's at the next level right now and, hopefully, as
year goes on he'll get a little bit better yet," Kelley said
when asked whether or not the horse can handle top Grand
Circuit competitors. "I was just trying to keep him some
place where he could win races and get brave... bring the
horse along that way. I had no idea at that point this time

last year that he would be where he's at right now or even
where he ended up last fall. As the competition got better,
he continued to get better. It seemed like he never found a

Kelley said Obrigado is staked to numerous top races this
year, the lone exception being the Breeders Crown.

Saratoga Stakes (July 2, 2015)
John Campbell W inner pays $72.50 in Saratoga Sire
Stakes
John Campbell made a rare trip to Saratoga Harness pay
off yesterday. Campbell guided Master Class to the win in
yesterday’s first of four sire stakes events at Saratoga for
2-year-old male trotters. In the process, he upset
Gotalottacredit from the Ake Svanstedt stable. The latter
crawled around the track, leading by 2 3/4 lengths after an
opening half went in 1:01, but Campbell was able to gun
him down in the lane. The winner is by Credit W inner and is

trained by Anette Lorentzon.
Coming in, Master Class had had two qualifiers at
Gaitway and the closest he had come was a 16 1/2-length
loss when sixth.
Reve Royal had the fastest winning time among the sire
stakes winners as he took the sixth race in 1:59.4 for driver
Chris Lems and trainer George Ducharme. By RC Royalty,
he won by a length over Andrew Goldstein. He was an
easy winner of his two qualifiers at Vernon.
A son of Conway Hall took the next leg as Dayson scored
a popular victory in the ninth race for Howard Okukso and
driver Jimmy W hittemore, paying $5.20.
Campbell picked up another win as he guided Dog Gone
Lucky to an easy win on the 11th. The colt is by Lucky
Chucky and is trained by Chuck Sylvester, He paid $4 and
won in 2:01.2
