Appendix 1: the criteria
Applications will be assessed against the following criteria:
I.
Quality of the application.
This refers to the rigour, originality and significance of the proposed study and the
extent to which it will add to the body of knowledge on active and healthy ageing; clear
aims and objectives; sound methodology; feasibility within the timescale and budget;
and explicit deliverables from the project. The research team should demonstrate it has
the skills and experience to complete the project. Applications should show evidence of
serious preliminary planning.
II.
Extent and depth of cross-border and interdisciplinary analysis.
Will the project produce comparative information for all of the island of Ireland? Will it
be of benefit to interdisciplinary analysis? The contribution that will be made to the
project by each co-applicant should be clearly explained.
III.
Relevance to policy and/or practice affecting older people.
The research should focus on a priority need within the ‘active and healthy ageing’
theme. It should set out the policy and practice contexts and focus on how these can
be changed to improve the lives of older people.
IV.
Identification of the data sets to be used
It will be important for researchers to be familiar with the data sets they propose to use,
including their strengths and limitations for comparisons across time and on an allIreland basis.

Comments
In deciding budgets you should consider carefully the level of
expertise needed.
We do not plan to pay recruitment costs for staff.
Since you will be analysing existing data, the amount needed for
consumables should be small.
Most projects funded by CARDI over-estimated these costs.
Travel should be by standard public transport, where possible. If
travelling by car the maximum amount payable is €0.50 per mile.
We do not pay subsistence rates/per diems.
This budget heading is for attendance at events directly related
to your research project. CARDI funds can be used to pay
registration fees and actual cost of accommodation and food. We
do not pay subsistence rates/per diems.
We expect reports to be concise. If you decide to print them, the
cost per printed report should not exceed €3.00.
If you plan to launch the report the costs should be built into the
budget from the beginning. A launch event should not cost more
than €1,000. Distribution costs may be included in the printing
contract but should not exceed €1 per report. Electronic
distribution should be considered as a cost-effective method.
If you have cost items that are not included above, please add
them here.
The total payable by CARDI will not exceed €20,000.
