GUIDELINES
The Award
This award recognizes a research team that demonstrates an outstanding level of
achievement in public health research.
Eligibility
Any research team in the field of public health, or a closely related field, affiliated with a
CAPHIA University is eligible for nomination. Nominations will be considered relative to
opportunity and career stage, and nominations of teams comprising early career
researchers are also encouraged. The Selection Panel may award a separate Early Career
Award to an outstanding research team where the lead investigators are all within their first
seven years post PhD or, where outstanding relative to the field, they may be awarded the
open award.
Nominator
CAPHIA is seeking one nomination of an outstanding research team from each Head of
School at a CAPHIA member university.
Application
Applicants are required to submit a written submission by 5pm, Eastern Standard Time,
Monday, 12 June 2017.
The application must comprise:
1. Cover sheet (completed and signed)
2. Supporting Statement: An overview of the team’s public health research
program. This supporting statement should highlight innovation and excellence,
and include evidence of achievement, addressing criteria such as:
 Research translation strategies
 Challenges and how addressed
 Novel collaborations and interdisciplinary partnerships
 Research impact
The supporting statement must not exceed two A4 pages (font must be Times
New Roman 11 point or Arial 11 point) and should include all bibliographic
information that is referred to in the submission. Applications exceeding the two
page limit will not be considered.

Head of School nomination letter: This should support the nomination and
substantiate claims made by the researchers in the written submission.
Maximum length is one page. Letters of support and recognition from external
partner organisations and other end users are encouraged and may be
appended.

Brief curriculum vitae (one page for each team member). PhD completion dates
should be included.
Optional additional supporting materials
Selection is based primarily on the written statement addressing the selection criteria, the
Nominator’s supporting statement, and comments from end users or beneficiaries of the
research translation to application to improve public health outcomes. Supporting materials
could include awards or other recognition for research translation and contributions to
public health practice.
Selection Process
The Selection panel will include Members of the CAPHIA Executive Committee, and may
include other CAPHIA University Heads of Schools and senior representatives of external
organizations such as the Public Health Association of Australia.
Team applications will be assessed on merit as deserving of an award or citation against the
selection criteria. The Selection Panel’s decision will be final and no further consideration
with be entered into. More than one award may be presented within a given year if there
are more candidates who are rated as equally outstanding. Additionally the Panel may
award an Early Career Award to teams where lead investigators are all within their first
seven years post PhD.
Presentation and Award
The Award will be announced by The President, Council of Academic Public Health
Institutions Australia (CAPHIA) at the next CAPHIA Public Health Teaching and Learning
Forum. A representative of the successful Team will be invited to present on the Team’s
achievements at the award ceremony.
The award will be a distinctive inscribed CAPHIA Trophy. In addition, a representative of the
successful Team will have costs covered by CAPHIA for registration, domestic travel and
accommodation to attend the next CAPHIA Forum.
