Reading Strategies
Use the following reading strategies to help you successfully read, analyze
and interpret your text. Think about how you use each strategy in your own
reading.
PREDICT: Try to figure out what will happen next. Read on to see if you
were right.
INFER: to deduce or conclude using stated and implied information,
evidence, reasoning, and background knowledge.
VISUALIZE: Try to picture the characters, settings, and events in your
mind to help you understand what is happening.
CONNECT: Think of similarities between what you are reading and
what you have experienced in real life.
QUESTION: Question what is happening while you are reading. Search
for reasons behind the actions and events.
CLARIFY: Stop occasionally to review what you have read.
DETERMINE IMPORTANCE: As you read, determine what
information, events, quotes, or description is important to help you better
comprehend your reading.
DETERMINE WORD MEANINGS:
Use the context of the sentence/paragraph/passage to help you determine the
meanings of unfamiliar words, or use a dictionary if possible.
EVALUATE: Form and support opinions about what you are reading.
