Try Out Information

2017 – 9/10 Year Old
Tournament Team
Tryout Information
Your child is invited to participate in our SAYB 10 year old tournament team tryouts. The
tournament teams provide a terrific opportunity for players to experience baseball
tournaments, additional practice time and an atmosphere more focused on competition.
The tryouts also provide a similar experience to the American / National League tryouts
in February.
DATE: Saturday, June 10, 2017 – sign ups & warm ups start @ 8:00am / Tryouts begin @ 9:00am (rain or
shine)
o It is important to sign in before 9:00am (even if raining). Only the parents of the players who signed in
on the above tryout date will be notified of a revised tryout time and location (if needed).
o This is the only date we will be conducting the tryouts – unfortunately we will not be able to offer an
alternative option for those who have a schedule conflict.
LOCATION:
Sitzer Park Fields – 4344 Hodgson Road – Shoreview, MN 55126
COST: There is no cost to participate in the tryouts; $170.00 for players who qualify for one of the teams
(includes new uniforms and tournament fees).
EVALUATION PROCESS:
o Players will be scored by independent evaluators at each of the below four stations:
 Hitting Station (40% of overall score): Players will receive (7) pitches at approximately
40 - 45 mph from a pitching machine.
 Infield Station (30% of overall score): Located at the shortstop position, players receive a
minimum of (4) batted ground balls from home plate, field the ball and throw to a 1st baseman.
 Outfield Station (20% of overall score): Players will start in four locations (N, S, E, W),
receive (4) fly balls from a pitching machine, catch the ball and throw to a cutoff man.
 Pitching Station (10% of overall score): Players will throw 5 pitches off a pitching mound to
a catcher.
o The average of a player’s scores will be multiplied by the above percentages to create the
player’s final score.
o Evaluators are not solely basing their scores on results; they are also taking into account many
other factors such as technique, bat speed, contact point, fielding form, throwing ability
(accuracy & strength), pitching technique, etc.
o Evaluators have the option to ask a player to repeat any of the above stations (if needed).
TEAM FORMATION:
o The number of Tournament Teams (most likely two) will be determined upon completion of tryouts.
o The nine highest scoring players from each Junior Minor division will be selected; two
additional players will be selected based on team needs. Total of 11 players per team.
o In the event a player chooses not to play (or is injured), a replacement player will be added,
based on tryout scores and input from the coach.
o Tournament Team coaches will be finalized upon completion of tryouts.
