We should…recognise that the material corollary to compulsory

Creating a class timeline
To gain a sense of what we’ll be covering in SOSE this year, we will use some of our
class time, and your homework time, to construct a timeline of key events relevant
to our studies. This timeline will be placed on the back wall.
Each of us will produce an A4 sized ‘annotation’ for a specific period of time that will
be placed upon the timeline. Each annotation must include:





The event’s name
The year(s) of the event
A two to three sentence summary of the event in your own words.
A primary source relevant to the event (can be visual or text)
The source of the primary source is listed
For example, the event ‘Compulsory voting introduced in Australian Federal
elections’ the annotation page would look like:
1924 – Compulsory Voting introduced in Australian
Federal elections
Until 1924 it was voluntary to vote (you would get no fine if you did not vote) in
Australian Federal elections. Tasmanian Senator Herbert Payne proposed the change
after voting turnout had declined from 71% in the 1919 election to less than 60% in
1922. It passed and since then all Australian states have adopted compulsory voting
laws, ensuring voter turnout in Australia is one of the highest in the world.
“We should…recognise that the material corollary to compulsory enrollment is
compulsory voting… We should... recognise that the material corollary to
compulsory enrolment is compulsory voting... The presumption is that our laws
are enacted by a majority of electors represented by a majority of the members
in this Parliament...” Senator Herbert Payne, 1924
