The Foreign Language Educators of Northeast Florida (FLENEF)
invites you and your students to participate in the 11th annual
Northeast Florida World Language Festival. Join us for a day of
competition and fun with the languages and cultures we love!
All students will compete in one individual language contest and may
also participate in optional team and individual events. At the end of
the festival, we will have an awards ceremony and entertainment by
our International Idol finalists.
Can’t bring students this year? Volunteer to be a World Language
Festival (WLF) judge and/or become a member of the WLF
committee! Hope to see you at the festival!!

GENERAL INFORMATION & RULES
Middle and high school students in levels 1 and up in the following languages are invited to participate in the festival:
American Sign Language (ASL), Chinese, French, German, Italian and Spanish. 7 th or 8th graders in a yearlong 1A, 1B or
equivalent level class are also invited to participate.
Each teacher bringing students must be a member of FLENEF. Teachers MUST accompany their students.
Each teacher may bring a maximum of 20 students, however, if a teacher brings more than 10 students, she/he is required to
bring an additional teacher or parent chaperone. Please note: There is a festival limit of 300 students and school registrations
will be accepted on a first come first served basis.
Each student must pay a $10.00 participation fee, which includes an international lunch and awards. Teachers and
chaperones must also pay a $10.00 participation fee.
Students must compete in the level of language in which they are currently enrolled. For questions about student placement,
e-mail [email protected]. Judges will take into consideration students who are on a 4 x 4 block schedule.
ALL students MUST compete in one and only one individual contest (declamation, impromptu speaking or
vocabulary bee), and may NOT participate in any of the optional team events (Brain Brawl, Amazing International
Race) or special events (Projects, Creative Drama Contest, International Idol) unless they do so.
 The Vocabulary Bee is a contest only for students enrolled in Levels 1, 1A or 1B. Native speakers may not compete in this
event. There is a minimum requirement of 5 students (per language/level) in order for the Bee to take place.
Each school may send only one Brain Brawl team per language. Teams must consist of between 2 and 4 students from any
combination of levels. All teams will compete at the same level and questions will be in English. Please note: There is a limit
of 8 Brain Brawl teams per language and they will be accepted on a first come first served basis.
Each teacher may enter one Amazing Race team. Teams must consist of 4 students.
Each teacher may enter only one talent performance (individual or group act) for the International Idol competition.
Performances must be in the target language and/or related to the target culture in which the student is enrolled. Acts must be
no longer than 5 minutes in length.
 Each teacher may enter one original skit in the Creative Drama contest.
Skits must be no longer than 5 minutes in length. Please note: Participants in the Creative Drama contest may not participate
in the Brain Brawl Contest Please note: There is a limit of 20 total acts for the International Idol and Creative Drama
competitions and they will be accepted on a first come first served basis.
Each teacher may enter up to 3 projects, but only one project per category: 2-D, 3-D, and Technology. Projects must be
checked-in by 8:30am and be accompanied by the student’s written reflection form.
Each school may participate in the impromptu group poster contest in the morning (8:40-9:25am). The contest theme will be
e-mailed to participating teachers a week prior to the festival. A white standard size poster board will be provided, but each
school is required to bring their own art supplies (markers, colored pencils, etc.).
Students attending the festival should dress comfortably, however, school dress codes must still be followed (i.e., no shortshorts, tank tops, ripped clothing, clothing with profanity, etc.). Students participating in the Amazing International Race must
wear sneakers or athletic shoes. Students may NOT run barefoot or in flip-flops.
Teachers must submit a signed permission/student honor pledge form for each student who is participating in the festival.
These forms must be sent in along with registration forms and fees by the deadline.
Completed registration materials and fees must be postmarked by Wednesday, February 1, 2017 or hand-delivered to one
of the county drop-offs sites by 3pm on Friday, February 3, 2017. None will be accepted late.

After Friday 2/17 only substitutions may be made: same level, same language, same
competition and for International Idol and Creative Drama, the same act/skit.

On the day of the festival, students may not switch contests or levels.
By signing below, I give the Northeast Florida World Language Festival and its organizers
permission to use photos, videos and/or audio recordings of me for publication for promotional
purposes. Further I agree to release and discharge the Foreign Language Educators of Northeast
Florida and the Duval County School Board, its officers, agent, and employees existing reasonable
care within the scope of employment, from liability growing out of personal injuries and property
damage resulting or occurring during preparations for or on the day of the festival.

PROJECT ENTRY FORM
All projects must be related to the culture or the study of the language in which the student is enrolled. Both
individual and group projects will be accepted.
Students submitting individual projects must be Festival participants. In the case of a group project, at least one of the
students must be a participating in the Festival.
Projects will be divided into 3 categories: 2-D, 3-D, and Technology.
The 2-D Category includes posters, drawings, paintings and photos. 2-D projects may not exceed a standard size
poster board (24” x 30”).
The 3-D Category includes ceramics, models, dolls, clothing, textiles and board games.
The Technology Category includes presentations on PowerPoint, Prezi or Sway, videos and web pages. Presentations
must not exceed 10 minutes and must be submitted on a flash drive labeled with the student’s name and school.
Each teacher may enter only 1 project in each category.
Projects must be registered by 8:30am on the day of the competition and must be accompanied by a hard copy of
the project reflection (see details in Contest Specification packet).
